In Vegas, Orioles get no respect

So is the late Rodney Dangerfield on the Orioles roster? Did they get him as a prospect in one of those trades for Miguel Tejada or Erik Bedard? I just got the over-under numbers for total wins for the upcoming MLB season from the Las Vegas Hilton and although I knew the Orioles would be lowly regarded, I had no idea how lowly. The Orioles not only have the lowest win total for the over-under in the majors -- IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE.

The Orioles have an O-U of 64 1/2 wins. The only other team that's even in the 60s is Florida with 69. You might be able to argue that playing in the tough AL East is an extenuating circumstance but even the D-Rays are listed at 75. Can you imagine what this season is going to be like if the Orioles really finish 10 games behind Tampa Bay?

On a more encouraging note, the over-under on Nick Markakis' hit total is 188 1/2.

Here are the Over-Under odds for 2008 wins, as listed at the Las Vegas Hilton:

Arizona Diamondbacks ... 87.5
Atlanta Braves ................84.5
Baltimore Orioles ............64.5
Boston Red Sox .............94
Chicago Cubs ................87
Chicago White Sox ........80.5
Cincinnati Reds .............78
Cleveland Indians .......... 90
Colorado Rockies .......... 83
Detroit Tigers ............... 93.5
Florida Marlins .............. 69
Houston Astros .............75.5
Kansas City Royals ......73.5
Los Angeles Angles .......92
Los Angeles Dodgers .....86.5
Milwaukee Brewers .......84.5
Minnesota Twins ...........75.5
New York Mets ............93.5
New York Yankees .......93.5
Oakland Athletic ..........73
Philadelphia Phillies .....87.5
Pittsburgh Pirates .........70.5
San Diego Padres .......84.5
San Francisco Giants ...73
Seattle Mariners ...........85.5
St. Louis Cardinals ......76.5
Tampa Bay Devil Rays . 75
Texas Rangers .............77
Toronto Blue Jays ........85.5
Washington Nationals ..72.5

This is sad. Whats worse? Its probably close to the truth. So what if they are wrong and the Orioles do beat the D-Rays. What does it buy them? Another 4th place finish and sub .500 finish. I know you call me hard. But, all these years of losing has done this.

Capt.,
I was just kidding about that ... Orioles fans are entitled to their cynicism. This really was surprising. Certainly Vegas can be off but this is not a good sign.

Take the under. If the O's get more than 50 wins it will be a fluke.

Bill,
Wow .. if they do that they'll be able to rent box seats at Camden Yards for storage space. I just looked at some MLB lows. Detroit had that 43 win season five years ago.

Who will be the 1st pick of the draft?

I reserve the right to change my mind but right now, Chris Long.

Bill,
How many people do you think will come to various O's games this year? It is sad that such a nice ballpark will be so empty. Baltimore has great sports history and this is just a tough time for all of us long time Orioles fans. I remember the old days on 33rd street. Hopefully sometime soon the Orioles will be respected again.

Ben,
If they can just get off to a decent start ... play .500 for a while, with a young team that will give the fans enough optimism to come out for a while even if they fade after Memorial Day. But if they start out with a real bad April and May, the place will be a ghost town.

It's so bad out here in Arizona that one of the local radio stations believe they can field a team that can beat the Orioles.

As much as I miss the days of Orioles winning during my time growing up in Maryland (I'm 45 now) and don't care for Angelos I try to remember that life is too short and has too many other problems to take sports too seriously. It can get frustrating and sad at times but there are more important things like your & your family's health. Puts things into perspective.

Rich,
Absolutely ... we all forget that this is suppose to be fun. A few days ago I wrote a short eulogy about Myron Cope, the former Steelers announcer who just passed away. And I thought that was one of his strengths, he made the game fun.

Hey Bill O: Did you read what you just wrote? "Detroit had that 43 win season five years ago." Look where that team is now!! Sitting pretty in a real tough division. This will turn around and the victories will be sweet.

Daniel,
We need that kind of optimsim.

Me and My buddies plan to have another Peter Angelos Protest come the end of April, anyone with me?

This is going to be bigger than Free the Birds which did absolutely nothing.

If you really dislike Peter Angelos, bring your signs and anything else to show your displeasure.

Steve, can I ask the point of that? All Angelos does now is rubber-stamp stuff, all the decision making is done by Andy McPhail. Why protest a guy who isn't doing anything at the moment? That'd be like protesting Mike Flannigan or Sam Perlozzo.

Hey Steve, I think its a marvelous idea to have another protest on PA. Its a real shame that fans are letting Angelos get away with so much..How about we fans have a protest outside the Law office of PA and in Camden Yards....Lets get Maryland and the nation on PA. He is ruining Baltimore its about time we start giving something back....PETE MUST GO. PETE MUST GO. Having protest is the only way to get him outta here...As Joe Angel says Lets wave him Bye bye....

Look at the STAR STUDDED 1996 Orioles. Even the manager was an ICON of MLB. The O's are SO FAR OFF COURSE it may take another 20 years to luck out a winner like they did in 1989. To play OVER THEIR HEADS like the 1969 METS. As far as this year goes it's OVER. Even BIG GUS TRIANDOS couldn't carry this team.
