Deep freeze in Green Bay on Sunday
Giants-Packers at Lambeau Sunday. Temperature forecast: A high of 4 degrees. With the wind, who knows?
A couple of years ago, I was in Green Bay right around Christmas to report a story about the Packers not doing so well. In fact, they were about to get pummeled in a Monday night game by the Ravens. There was a lot of talk about Brett Favre being washed up and that to preserve his legacy, he probably should retire. Yeah, right.
Well, what I remember about that trip was being in Fuzzy Thurston's bar, being in the diner where Ray Nitschke ate blueberry pancakes (his stool has his name on it), visiting the Packers' Hall of Fame, eating in Favre's restaurant, buying a Johnny Blood T-shirt -- AND HOW BLOODY COLD IT WAS. I mean it was so freakin' cold, it hurt to walk across the parking lot to get to your car.
So, this is going to be a real treat for both teams on Sunday.
The coldest game I ever attended was Jan. 11, 1981 at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. Cowboys-Eagles for the NFC championship. Philly won. Not only was it frigid, but the wind was blowing about 25 mph so that the wind-chill was minus-20. The Vet had an enclosed pressbox, but it didn't matter. There were all kinds of openings in that place and the cracks and crevices just turned the pressbox into a wind tunnel with a constant blast straight out of Siberia.
But the fans, as usual, had it worse. Especially at halftime. That's when they found out that the toilets had frozen.
