« Ravens' Reed gets burned at roast | Main | Not everyone should talk the talk »

About last night, dear

Morning, folks.

Your regular DJ, Bill Ordine, had to attend a funeral today, so I'm attempting to fill his large -- but
impeccably polished -- blogging shoes. If it's any consolation to you, Bill usually bats me fourth on The Sun softball team, so I'm hoping that means I can handle the pressure.

So it looks as if Jason Garrett slipped into town late last night for his second interview with the Ravens, meaning he could, according to my colleague Jamison Hensley, become the Ravens head coach as early as today. If I close my eyes, I can almost picture Garrett and Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti drinking wine and overlooking the Inner Harbor from some luxury apartment balcony, kind of like Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale did during Season 3 of The Wire on HBO. In Baltimore, as they say on The Wire, God still resides in the details. And I suspect there are still a lot of details to be worked out. Bisciotti might even want some assurance that, if Garrett gets the job, he'll
never agree to have his team participate in the HBO program, Hard Knocks, a mistake the Billick made the year after the Ravens won the Super Bowl and just the kind of distraction a private guy like Bisciotti might want to see less of in the post-Billick era.

What exactly do we know about Garrett? My colleague Mike Klingaman, in this artful profile,
called him "the Barack Obama of football," which might be fitting, considering the Ravens will need to have the audacity of hope next year if they want to recover from this year's boondoggle. Like Obama, Garrett is an Ivy League graduate, although he earned his undergrad at Princeton while Obama picked up his law degree from Harvard. I'm not sure whether this makes Marty Schottenheimer the John McCain of this analogy (wise, grizzled, has come up short on the big stage in the past), but here is what I do think:

If Garrett is the guy, it's a chance to breathe some excitement into the franchise. Schottenheimer, while competent, is about as exciting as a turnip. And at age 64, he has an expiration date. He's a placeholder. Two years, maybe three, and he'll be eying the Early Bird special somewhere (and who can blame him? Dinner at 4:30? Where do I sign up?). With Garrett, the Ravens have a chance to map out not just the next three years, but the next seven or eight. Pittsburgh already appears to have a coach locked in for the next decade (or more). Wouldn't it be fun to watch Garrett and Mike Tomlin play chess against one another twice a year into their early 50s?

Billick, for all his shortcomings, gave the Ravens an identity. For better or worse, he was our guy, even when he was blowing kisses at Rodney Harrison and going through quarterbacks like Liz Taylor went through husbands.

Someone like Schottenheimer will never be our guy. He's a rental. And with all due respect to Rex Ryan, the Ravens need a clean break.

The risk might be greater, but this team needs something with more growth potential.

Here is hoping we find out today if the red-headed wunderkind is that guy.

Interesting assessment and, if Garrett becomes the next head coach, I hope you're right! This team had grown wearisome to watch under Billick and there's already been more interest generated with his firing and search for a successor than we've seen the past few years!

I think they need to give Caldwell more consideration. Garrett is too young and too inexperienced.

Unfortunately, I have to completely disagree with you and the majority of Ravens fans who think he is the "right" fit. In all honesty, he will not be respected by the veterans in our locker room. They all love Rex Ryan, and if Garrett gets the job, then there will be a 99.9% chance that Ryan will walk out the door. However, I dont think Ryan is the answer either. All the players love him and he loves them, but how will that get them disciplined enough to not have anymore late game blow ups. I read somewhere that Ogden was quoted as saying that he thought Marty Schottenheimer would be the best fit BUT that he wouldn’t play for him because he made Bruce Smith do the Oklahoma drill while he played for the Redskins… This is EXACTLY what these players need. They need a guy to yell at them, and get them back to respecting the game because it will make them play better. If players like Ogden want to leave, so be it, he was hurt almost all of the year anyway, and he is just eating up cap space that we could use to sign a cornerback or something. Do any Ravens fans really think Garrett will improve our offense that much when we still don’t have a QB??? Take Schottenheimer for 2-3 years, and see what he can do. Maybe he will get these players to actually play some football instead of throwing flags into stands (even though that was the single most funny moment of the entire football season).

I definitely like Garrett. I think he would be a perfect fit. I like it even better when John Clayton talks about Garrett bringing in Cam Cameron as the O Co, and Dom Capers as the D Co.

I think it's time for a youthful infusion , concerning the Ravens.
Garrett has been in football his entire life and he's definitely a smart and intelligent individual.
Marty can stay home , in North Carolina and be content with the "golden years" lifestyle. We don't need a 2 year fix and grooming period, which is what he would offer.
I keep hearing comments about the veterans who need to be railed in. Perhaps, winning would be the great equalizer in that mindset. That window of opportunity is closing on only a handful of players. Let's not forget about the other 48 guys on the roster who are young and hungry, in their own right.
Bisciotti made his millions by taking chances on youthful, intelligent and energetic individuals. This is the mold that Jason Garrett portrays and I believe , would be successful at.
I think we would all be surprised at the respect that would be shown to this guy. Mike Tomlin is younger and I think that those guys played hard for him and respected him. Why? He knows people and knows football.
It's not about age here. It's about winning football games and appreciating the game.
I hope that Garrett signs the dotted line on his contract and that it's here in Baltimore.

I heard one pundit mentioning, as Rich did above, that the new coach of the Ravens needs to be one that the team will respect. However, the Ravens might not have that luxury of a known commodity. Rex Ryan will walk out the door? Whether they respect him or not, he was a part of the braintrust that gave us the Ravens' season we just suffered through. Bill Cower is not coming out of retirement (least wise not for this gig) and Schottenheimer is not an answer either. Rich is right about one thing - the Ravens need someone who is going to kick them in the butt. Since those type of coaches are hard to come by these days, Garrett represents a viable candidate. He is inexperienced but at every level, he has shown the ability to do so much more. That kind of promise might be nice to have in Baltimore.

Here comes Opie!

Garrett is the right choice some young blood, all Ozzie and Bischotti have to do is let the players know that Garrett is running the team and if they dont like it they can hit the road

I like Rex, and wish him well, but as the defensive coordinator the past several years, he is partly responsible for the lack of discipline that has also been very apparent the past 3 years.

And, if player discipline is a problem, do you really want to select "their" first choice?

I agree with Rich J --- go with Marty. He'll get us to the playoffs NEXT YEAR, and even if he's only here 2-3 years, our young guys will be the better for it. Then, take the shot on the 'next hall of fame coach out there'. But, you knew Bisciotti was gonna go for the young guy, so if he signs, we better hope this Ivy leaguer is as smart as advertised. He must be good if Jerry Jones is willing to pay him head coach money to stay. I'm betting he DOES stay in Big D because he's a Cowboy at heart and will likely get the job when Wade is done. My #3 choice (after Marty and Garrett) would be Caldwell from Indy because I believe this team will play like hell for a black coach (no offense), even the vets, and Caldwell already has asst. coach experience. Colts will make him their head coach if Dungy leaves, so then where do the Ravens go? That's right, back to Marty because even Bisciotti has to know that Marty is better than any of the others. It may not play out this way, but in the end the best thing for this team is to hire Marty NOW so he doesn't turn us down because we offered the job to 2 other guys before him.

The only thing that bothers me about Garrett is that he does have red hair. I'm hoping that he dyes it. But what male would dye his hair red ?

If Garrett accepts the Ravens coaching position than it will be interesting but I have my doubts about him. He was an OC for only a year so he has very little experience and I doubt this veteran-laden team would respect him.

This guy is not the answer. The Ravens are going to be Oakland East. No playoffs for many years.

That's all lovely but he left without accepting the job. He doesn't really want it. He would toss us if somewhere He reaaaalllly wants to be comes calling. NO
THANKS!!! Rex or Harbaugh please.

White coach. Black coach. Old coach. Young coach. Red headed coach,(huh?). Let me tell you all something. These players are suppose to be professionals. It makes no difference who the coach is, these so called men need to grow up and play the game the way they are supposed to. Or better yet, the way they are being paid to play. If they took responsibility for their play, Billick would still be here. Alright, now that I got that off my chest, I say go with Garrett. Any one who had the fortitude to stay in this league as long as he did as a back-up, should be able to handle these prima dona's.

Here is what the Ravens need:
Head Coach - Sylvester Croom
O Coordinator - Gen. David Petreaus
D Coordinator - Dr. Phil

Mike has it right. The guy that the PLAYERS want should be immediately ruled out!! This undisciplined, arrogant bunch needs somebody to come in here, get a grip on them and their egos, and CHANGE the climate! And let's face it folks, we're gonna be saying goodbye to Ray and JO very soon anyway, so if they can't get on board with the new guy, let 'em go. Things MUST change!

If Garrett does not want the job, hire Rex immediately. I will leave open the door for Harbaugh since he obviously made a strong impression on the Ravens staff, but Rex Ryan would be a great fit...
