More on new Oriole Luke Scott

Well, we told you if we came up with anything else about any of the new Orioles, we'd let you know.

Luke Scott was featured in a January 2007 story about athletes who carry firearms.

A Scott quote: "An athlete gets paid a lot of money and someone who is after that, a thief, a mugger or someone who steals from people, they are taking a chance with the law that if they get caught, they are going to jail or face some other problem."

Scott added, "In my case, you are going to get shot."

Considering the tragic circumstances of Redskins safety Sean Taylor's death -- Taylor was shot and killed during a break-in at his Florida home by people who apparently targeted his house -- the issue of player vulnerability is certainly a serious and sobering one.

Good for Luke Scott. Too bad the People's Republic of Maryland probably won't let him carry it in order to protect himself.

i agree with scott and think we should all carry firearms to pick off criminals.

stupid and unecessary post.

I hope this means the O's will give Luis Hernandez a chance to play SS. Also, I hope that Mora goes to a contender and Huff is given a chance to play 3b full time so that Millar can play 1b on a full time basis as well.

To help protect his life, I'd take down the above post. Many people of means carry weapons, legally and otherwise. To call attention to it, however, adds to the interest of those who want to see if he is "quick draw Mcgraw."

Bill,
That horse was out of the barn when the story appeared 11 months ago. If the player didn't feel he had an important point of view to express, he wouldn't have cooperated in the telling of the story in the first place. And I posted it without comment because I understand that many folks have strong and justifiable feelings on the subject both ways.

Perhaps Luke Scott should start using his guns to start picking off base stealers.

My guess is that he's really going to hit it off with Jamie Walker. LOL

Here begins the avalanche? Mora, Roberts, Ramon Hernandez, trade them all! We need to see something different.

I remember when carrying a baseball bat was good enough to protect baseball players. I'm sure beating mugger to death would be much more satisfying than a single gunshot.

I agree with brian f. What does that have to do with anything that the fans want to know? The fans want to know his stats and if he will help the team. Not if he carries firearms. You people at The Sun need to do your research more and give the readers what they want to know, not some garbage like this post. Ridiculous!

Weapons in Baltimore City, what a novel idea? Mr. Scott, welcome to one of the most deadly cities in North America. What caliber do you have? Oh, one other thing...what size bullet proof vest do you wear? A bit of advice, stay away from East Baltimore, West Baltimore, South Baltimore and North Baltimore. You are not in Kansas anymore. Well, I hope you do well Mr. Scott in a O's uniform, we can use your 18 homeruns; if not, its time to beam you down Scotty to Norfolk.

Great, he stinks and he is a gun nut. The sad thing is he should fit right in with all the roiders, red sox fans, and bmore haters currently residing in the clubhouse.

I don't expect we will see much improvement in the Os talent pool from this trade. Reminds me of 19 years ago when the whiners and haters chased Eddie Murray out of town and all we got back was Juan Bell, Brian Holton, and Ken Howell. They were supposed to be top prospects in the Dodgers system. Anybody remember the impact they made on the Os "success" thereafter?

Bill your full of bad and pointless posts today!

I love my hometown of Baltimore, miss it dearly, but the flaming liberalism is just plain embarassing. Anyway, welcome to the O's Luke Scott! You've got this O's fan in your corner. Glad to see Miggy getting a clean slate in the NL. And at least we all know he will probably never win a series over there :-)

I agree with Conrad.. I would love to see Luis Hernandez be our starting SS come Opening Day.. I would also like to keep Roberts unless there is a deal on the table that is impossible to say no to..

You gun people are like a cult. It's like a fetish, and those who carry guns get shot at infinitely higher rates than those who don't. Look at the rest of the civilized world outside this country:

Infinitely lower gun ownership rate + infinitely lower murder rate = obvious correlation

Luke Scott sounds like another dime-a-dozen redneck athlete. For every Etan Thomas, Steve Nash and Ira Newble, there are 50 Luke Scotts playing pro sports. I'll root for him on the field, but his world view is discouraging.

I'd also like to add that Sean Taylor-- may he rest in peace-- might have averted death had he not confronted the burglars and simply stayed in his room. This is not to say that Sean was to blame AT ALL for his death, but the current police report states that he swung a machete at them and they reacted by shooting him. You know the same would have happened if he'd fired a gun. Again, I don't blame Sean even one bit for what happened to him, but if the objective is merely to stay alive, it's been shown time and again that the safest strategy is to avoid confrontation.

Wow,
Is this what the Oriole Way has fallen to? Commenting on Bill of Rights issues regarding a no-name trade chip that has yet to take a pitch for the O's? When does the Blast take the pitch?

Great to see that the Orioles are becoming a repository for gun nuts and (religous) freaks. I hate this loser already.

Most anti gun people feel that way until they are a victim of a mugging or worse. Then the veiwpoint usually changes.

As for the trade I'm all for it. Tejeda didn't want to be here and it showed in his play last year. The O's need to rebuild and most of the experts think the O's got the better end of the deal. Time to get younger and hungrier. Bedard and Roberts are next.

Millar Should go next then Albert Belle # 2 (Aubrey Huff) should go. keep mora and roberts, Markakis should stay. good move on tejada Liked the guy but seriously when you keep losing you just don't care anymore about playing your hardest so I think he'll get rejuvinated with the astros.

send the gun nut back to Texas ,
we don't need more guns in Baltimore

To me, the most interesting part of this story is that Scott is also a born-again Christian who is as public in his displays of his religion as any pro athlete. He likely won’t ever be caught coming out of a sleazy nightclub at 3:40 a.m., but I am curous about this juxtaposition of his overt Christianity and shooting some guy who might threaten him.

To Dylan, yo knuklehead this is about baseball, not gun ownership. So what he owns a gun and is not afraid to use it. Good on him, I like him already. How can he help the O's win ball games and climb out of 3rd place. Thats all I care about. Oh, and by the way, if you have a problem with law abiding American citizens owning guns or the 2nd Amendment .. pack your bags, call Delta or United , and GET OUT!!!

Phil,
You're entitled to your opinion and I'm not taking issue with that.
But just to clarify, it's 4th place, for the Orioles it's always 4th place. Okay, I think maybe once like maybe four years ago, it was 3rd place. But the O's own 4th place.

We got absolutly nothing for Tejada. He was one of the 5 best hitters we ever had. He played every game to the hilt.

It reminded me of the Eddy Murry trade.

Where are Brooks, Frank and Jim.

Tejada played hard when he felt like playing hard. I wonder what games some of you watched.

He lollygagged to first on groundouts too many times. As Minnie Minosa once said, he'd keep playing, regardless of how old he was, until everybody else learned to run the 90 feet to first base on every play.

Tejada also lollygagged on throws to first too many times, and botched too many routine groundballs, so I don't want to hear this 'he played every game to the hilt' stuff.

I remember on more than one occasion where he thought a ball was a homerun and began his trot only to have it hit the wall. He'd only end up with a double instead of what should have been a triple.

He was also called out by Trembley for not being on time and for trying to skip infield practice (statistics show he needed all the practice he could get).

A guy making that much money setting that kind of an example is not good for the club.

I say goodbye Miggy, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.

I'll take the Tike Redman's of the world; they play hard all the time and if these 5 give that kind of effort, I believe we'll have gotten the best end of the deal.

Just great and just what we need: One more Texas lunatic screwing up not just the country in general this time, but Baltimore in particular as well. This trade just got worse, and it wasn't all that hot in the first place.

If Scott wants to shoot something, he might start with his .255 batting average.

Believe when I tell you that Mr. Luke Scott is a class act and will be a great asset to the club. He is a young man with old time values and would be an awsome addition to any team.

I hope the only shots I hear about in connection with Luke Scott pertain to the porch in right field. I can see already that Scott will thrive in Baltimore, home of the brave (unfortunately not the Braves).

Who knows, maybe this kid (or one of the several other players we got) will turn out to be the next blockbuster. Then again who am I kidding, we haven't had a solid trade since Milt Pappas - Frank Robinson!
