Silver lining: Ravens' draft position improves
In their genius, the NFL overlords have figured out how to wring some good out of losing. It's called the NFL draft. And the Ravens' position in April's draft just got a little better as a result of yesterday's humiliating loss in Miami to the now 1-13 Dolphins.
Without trying to sort through the tie-breaking possibilities, the Ravens (4-10) now figure to have a pick in the neighborhood of fifth through eighth overall. There are four teams with fewer than four wins -- the Dolphins (1), Falcons, Jets and Rams (3). Three other teams also have four wins -- the 49ers, Raiders and Chiefs. Note: The 49ers' spot is held by the Patriots (yikes).
All of those teams are capable of running the table -- with losses -- with the exception of either the Jets or Chiefs, who play each other in the last week of the regular season.

Maybe BB can draft another QB to ruin?

Here's looking at a good young CB.

Jerry,
How about a couple of them.

Bill,
How do you feel about Troy Smith after seeing him two times in action? I think he makes better decisions than Boller does, and he's only a rookie. Any change of heart to your belief that the Ravens shouldn't throw him into the fire so soon?

Joe,
I was enormously impressed with that field goal drive with no times outs. Yeah, I have second thoughts. I still think Boller deserves the benefit of some playing time but I also believe that Smith should be getting some second-half series if not a start. Of course, Boller's condition might just make that decision for everyone.

Fire Billick!
Fire him today!

Kyle Boller is who we thought he was. He has a hell of an arm, but he is too inconsistent to be a regular starter. If the Ravens want more of the same, play Boller some more and struggle to win. With a team needs to do some serious evaluations, I do not see why they would not play Troy Smith. He looks like he has McNair's poise with Boller's arm.

We need to lose out to jump Atlanta and draft Matt Ryan. This team has had enough with college QB's in pass-happy offenses (Chris Redman & Kyle Boller.)

We need to be rooting for Oakland, KC, and San Fran. the next two weeks. The Ravens need to take a chance at the same time and play Tory Smith the next two weeks. The chance is he might win and cost us some positions in the draft

Bill,
If you are the Ravens, and you can draft any player, who or what position do you draft? I haven't heard of any can't miss players, but then again, I haven't been reading Mel Kiper too much.
------------------------------------------------
JLS,
It's too early for me as well ... when I figured they were drafting lower, I would have said a CB because I think the best one would have been available. If this pick gets real high, you have to consider trading down for multiple picks.

Bill- If the Ravens have a pick 4 to 8, there is really no player worth taking there that the Ravens need (CB, WR, DE) I dont think we should take a QB in the first round, we have bigger needs. I think we should trade down to the early 20s take the CB from South Fla and then get an extra 2nd round pick. What do you think?
----------------------------------------
Ben,
You read my mind ... I answered another reader in the same fashion. If this pick gets real high and someone really wants the pick, I'd trade down. The only player who tempts me right now in that range is Virginia's Chris Long.

I say fire BILLICK and his inept offense. It's ruining us internally. Build you DEFENSE and let the offense try to do whatever they can it seemed to have worked in our super bowl run why get away from our competative advantage, which is our high powered star studded defenser. Tom Brady and both Mannings would struggle in our passing game. Favre would be worse than Kyle caught in head lights Boller

Artin- I agree with you on one side. I think Billick SHOULD go but will stay and we will hire someone to overhaul the offensive system. I think if given the right system Boller or Smith can be a good QB.
You are right by the way, that No QB would succeed in our current system

billick is a full blown arrogant knucklehead!!..they cant fire his sorry butt fast enough for me

I'm pretty sure Bisciotti won't fire Billick, but I do hope he hires an offensive man to run a complete new offense. If Billick doesn't like it, he should tender his resignation.
I also agree that the QB means next to nothing without a decent offense to run and I would not trust the health to some high-priced QB to that offensive line. I've seen Boller take shots that I FELT sitting at home.
The Ravens need pass rushing interior linemen, a mean, big, smart center, probably a tackle and some DB's because the crew I've seen this year haven't learned anything despite all the injury caused experience they've gotten.

How about drafting some O-Line?? Who does the reporting about the offensive line any ways? Last time I noticed, a balloon could bring through that "paper appearance" offensive line. Why not get a corner in free agency or with the 2nd pick? We can't continue to let one of our suspect quarterbacks pass behind a wall made out of paper.
------------------------------------------
Steve,
Remember they used a No.1 pick last year for guard Ben Grubbs. But if they want to draft a tackle in the first round this year, there are two available that are considered top six to top 10 choices, the best one being a kid from Michigan.

Well with Ogden up in the air about retiring and even if he sticks around one more year you need to think about his replacement. Ravens did great by getting Grubb lets put Michigans OT next to him and give the running backs and QB all the help they need. Look at the O-line in say NE? Indy? Cleveland? Those QB did (not) do it by them selves!
