Hard lesson learned at Knight school
You'll have to make up your own mind about whether Texas Tech coach Bob Knight explicitly or implicitly ordered a scorched-earth assault on hapless Louisiana Tech last night. If you missed the results, the Red Raiders of Lubbock humiliated the Bulldogs by 55 points, 86-31, and at one point went on a 42-1 run.
Some might feel what happened last night is an extreme reaction to Texas Tech being humiliated last Saturday by little Centenary, but the evidence isn't conclusive. Bob Knight was on the bench coaching last night after falling ill in the Centenary game and his son, Pat Knight, was the designated head coach. And when you look at that incredible run by Texas Tech, you have to also note that Louisiana Tech missed 27 shots -- which is on the Bulldogs, not the Red Raiders.
"From our standpoint, great game for us," Pat Knight said. "We needed it. Last few days have been really tough from a staff standpoint, team standpoint, just because of what happened down in Centenary. For these kids to bounce back like this and play this well, I think, speaks a lot for them."
An interesting sidelight is that a kid on Texas Tech who scored, Tyler Hoffmeister, was the survivor in the ESPN reality show, Knight School, where a bunch of kids tried to make Knight's team as walk-ons before last season. Hoffmeister was the successful tryout and played a handful of minutes last season. Last night, he scored against Louisiana Tech and the quote from Pat Knight was interesting as it relates to ESPN.
"I think it's great too because it kind of sticks it to ESPN a little bit," Pat Knight said. "They did not think we were going to keep Tyler, and then especially didn't think we'd keep him for a second year."
See the story we linked to above for the full quote, which does praise the player at length, but the remark makes you wonder whether everyone with whom the Knights have had the slightest disagreement are on some sort of payback list.

Bill go back to what you were doing five minutes before you wrote this article. It has no bearing on anything and was a waste of your time. Just like what I'm doing right now. You'll still be an idiot ten minutes from now. Only you'll have 1/100 of the credentials of Knight.

Mike,
What??? One-one-hundreth of the credentials of Knight as what? A basketball coach? Of course -- even less. Are you talking about the ESPN thing? And do you mean Bob? Or Pat? Thanks for taking the time to write and I give you credit for putting your name on the criticism. I've been called worse and probably with justification. But this one I don't even get.

I love Bob Knight and he can run it up all he likes, but perhaps you didn't notice who the coach of Louisana Tech is?
Research that and see if you find an interesting journalistic lead.

Ashley,
I did notice that it's Kerry Rupp and he was an assistant at Indiana several years after Knight left but under Knight's immediate successor. Probably better known for his time at Utah. You seem to have a point, feel free to spell it out.
