Maryland football news without the controversy

A couple of readers wrote in to point out local football items that we thought the larger audience would find of interest. And amazingly, there's no turmoil over referee calls in any of this.

* Tonight in the football semifinals of the college division formerly known as I-AA (Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision), Richmond plays Appalachian State. Appalachian State is known for its upset of Michigan earlier this season. But the Richmond Spiders, with an 11-2 record, were upset this season by Towson University. Back in October, Towson QB Sean Schaefer led a TD drive in the final minute and threw a 14-yard scoring pass on the last play of the game.

* And the state high school football playoffs are going on at M&T Bank Stadium. For an admission considerably cheaper than most other games played in the Ravens home stadium, football fans can see players who are competing just as hard and with just as much pride as the Sunday guys.
Last night, Damascus beat Hereford, 40-20, in Class 3A. Tonight at 7 p.m. in Class 4A, Arundel (13-0) plays Quince Orchard (13-0). In Class 2A tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., River Hill (13-0) plays Eastern Tech (13-0). And in Class 1A at noon tomorrow, it's Dunbar (13-0) vs. Allegany (13-0).

Arundel has a really top notch player, QB Nick Elko, that has not committed to any college yet. I hope he decides to stay local and goto Maryland. Arundel has not been to the state championship game since they won it back in 75.

It would be nice to have a local champ. Luck to all those young men playing this weekend and best wishes that they all stay healthy. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
