Patriots staking claim to best ever
We opened this debate a few weeks ago and admitted back then that it might be premature. But now everyone has jumped on the bandwagon and the discussion is absolutely legitimate. By now you know that the Patriots swept away the Cowboys -- considered the best team in the NFC -- 48-27, in Dallas yesterday
So, are the current New England Patriots the best NFL team ever?
First of all, I can only legitimately carry the debate as far back as the first Super Bowl. Beyond that, like say the 1941 Chicago Bears, and I confess ... I'm lost.
But here are my contenders:
1972 Dolphins, 1985 Bears, 1978 Steelers, 1989 49ers, 1966 Packers
Certainly, the Dolphins generally get the nod because you can't do better than perfect, but if you want to make an argument, remember they did not dominate in the playoffs on their way to a 14-7 win over Washington in the Super Bowl. But anyone who saw the '85 Bears knew they could be breathtaking in overwhelming the opposition but, at 15-1, they have that one blemish. The '78 Steelers were a steamroller and outgunned an equally talented Dallas team in one of the most exciting Super Bowls of all time. Those 49ers were the best Joe Montana team and obliterated the opposition in the playoffs by a combined 126-26. And the '66 Packers were among Lombardi's best, winning the first Super Bowl (the '62 Packers had even better stats but they were pre-Super Bowl).
At their current pace, the Patriots would shatter the record for points scored in a season. They project to 613. And they are currently outscoring the opposition by more than 2-to-1, 230 to 92. Of course, we all know what this will probably come down to. There's that Nov. 4 game against the currently undefeated Colts in Indianapolis. And, of course, the playoffs and Super Bowl.
Take your pick for the best NFL team ever (between the Patriots and the teams listed above) in our new poll.

Comments
The Patriots also have a real advantage of playing in the worst division in the NFL. The Bills, Jet and Dolphins have won a combined total of 2 victories and 12 losses. The Bills beat the Jets and the Jets beat the Dolphins. Otherwise those 3 teams would be 0-6 right now.
This is the same as having 6 additional bye weeks in the 16 week schedule.
The Colts have to play the Titans, Jaguars, and Texans twice. They have a combined record of 10 victories and 6 losses.

Best EVER? I don't know, that's saying a lot. Here's my thoughts on the game

We'll see. It looks good so far, but we'll see. The Nov 4 game against the dolts will be interesting. The Pats have lost to them 3 times in a row and it could be interesting.
The Pats' playing in the weakest division is a good point.
The single best team I ever saw in a single performance was the Bears in the 1986 Super Bowl. I would love to equate this Pats team to that team eventually but not yet. That team was a one time thing and they couldn't keep it together more than a year. The 'Super Bowl Shuffle' and all that nonsense was just nonsense. What have they done since?
Nada, and they are a joke today. The Pats on the other hand are considered favorites to win their 4th SB Title in 7 years.

John Unitas was the best ever, Unitas to Berry was the best ever, Lenny Moore (#24) was the best ever, Big Daddy, Gino, Alan The Horse, L.G. Dupre, Art Donovan, The greatest game ever played.
The list goes on and on
irsay thinks he can take that with him?

The Pats remind me of Roger Federer in that an opponent REALLY gets up for them and come at them with their best shot, etc. and the Pats just raise their game without seeming to break a sweat.
I never had any feeling during the game that Dallas had a real chance.

As I implied in that item, I've seen most of the teams I mentioned there ... these guys are as scary good as anyone I can think of since those '85 Bears.

If the Patriots keep this up, I'd probably rate them behind the '85 Bears and ahead of the others. I have no real statistical or anecdotal evidence to back that up, just a deep-rooted reverence for that great Chicago team...
That said, I think a title at the end of this season would create justifiable comparisons.
November 4 will be a great game to circle on the calendar, and hopefully neither the Colts nor Pats slips up prior to then so we can see a true matchup of juggernauts.

Obviously too early to make the case for '07 Patriots as best ever. With that said however, you look at this team with all their leadership, and all their weapons, and you definately can't leave them out of the discussion. That offense is phenomenal. If Maroney and Morris get healthy, wow! Who's gonna stop them??

I can't recall any team having a run like this.

Lets look at the state of the NFL today vs the NFL back then. Its almost impossible to keep multiple Hall of Famers on your team in todays era. In the 70's and 80's, you had several teams that were great and you had to be great to win. I have no doubt that if the 2007 Pats had to face the '78 Steelers, '85 Bears, '89 49ers, or one the early 90s Cowboys teams that they would get their clocks cleaned.

89 Niners best ever. What they did in that playoff year was scary. Unlike the Pats---they called off the dogs when ahead by 30. The Niners could have beaten Denver 75 -10, but Montana sat out the remaining 1.5 quarters.....Hell---the Pats would have been using their hurry up offense until the gun went off. Stats mean nothing. The Niners in '89 played in a far tougher NFL. The QB's the Pats faced this year would be 3rd stringers in '89. (with 1 0r 2 exceptions).

Matt,
I covered that Super Bowl in New Orleans. Boy, those guys were good.
