About last night, dear
Pretty exciting Navy game last night as the Mids went two overtimes to beat Pitt, 48-45. Not to take anything away from Navy but there will be plenty of folks on the Pitt side who will scream this is further evidence that Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt and perhaps offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh continue to prove that they haven't gotten the hang of this coaching thing yet. The Pitt constituency was very, very unhappy.
Without going through the blow-by-blow of this highly entertaining game -- assuming you weren't invested in one side or the other and in full disclosure, I wore one of those funny Donald Duck suits (proudly) seemingly back before ironclads -- we will TiVO ahead to the ending, which I managed to stay awake for.
In the first OT, Pitt hammered out a touchdown and Navy answered with a single strike 25-yard pass from QB Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada to Reggie Campbell. In the second OT, the Mids went on offense first and settled for a 29-yard field goal by Joey Bullen. Then, Pitt comes storming back. The Panthers had second-and-goal from the 3-yard line. Second down: running play for one yard. Third down: incomplete pass (illegal motion penalty declined). And with the game on the line, Wannstedt goes for the win on fourth down and the Panthers go incomplete on a jump ball in the right side of the end zone. In western Pennsylvania, they want to back up the truck and load up the whole coaching staff.
Meanwhile, the Mids have 10 days to prepare for defending ACC champion Wake Forest, which has its own test this weekend against Florida State. So, this is shaping up like maybe an 8-4, 9-3 season for Navy (even 10-2 if they're at the top of their game against the Demon Deacons and Notre Dame) and almost certainly another bowl appearance. No wonder they call Navy coach Paul Johnson, "The Admiral."

Comments
C'mon, it's "Mids" not "Middies". One is a short nickname for midshipmen, the other is a lacrosse position.

Ted,
Thanks for writing. I took a look around and the term Middies is fairly common usage as a casual nickname for Midshipman in many, many publications. But in the National Directory of Collegiate Athletics, the official nicks are indeed Midshipmen and Mids. Adjustment made.

I JUST LOVE IT!!!
I've coached and followed option football for over 35 years and it is still the only offense you can run without a 6" thick playbook.
The most astonishing part about the Navy-Pitt game from a TeeVee standpoint is the amazing implication about modern football, stated by Lou Holtz:
There are coaches, players and teams that would rather lose passing than win running an option attack.
Think about it!
Meanwhile: GO NAVY!!
