On McNair and Boller and last year's Steelers

Word from the Ravens' walking wounded is that MLB Ray Lewis (triceps) will play against the Jets on Sunday, OT Jonathan Ogden (toe) will not and QB Steve McNair (groin) is a maybe.

As Sun beat reporter Jamison Hensley wrote today, McNair may wind up being a game-time decision. Kyle Boller took all the snaps in practice but as McNair pointed out, there's been plenty of times in his long personal history of being banged up where he didn't take many or any practice reps but still played effectively.

Here's the concern, though. This is a groin injury. While I'm not trying to play doctor, it has been the type of injury that can be aggravated. And I am reminded of the Steelers last season when Pittsburgh rushed Ben Roethlisberger back into the lineup after the motorcycle accident and the appendicitis attack.

If you recall, Pittsburgh won its opener against Miami with Charlie Batch playing great. Then the Steelers put Roethlisberger back in and lost six of their next seven as Big Ben played extremely poorly in five of them. By mid-November, Roethlisberger started getting his bearings and except for the two games against the Ravens, played well the rest of the way as the Steelers finished 6-2 -- but 8-8 and out of the playoffs. And that begs the question: How might Pittsburgh's year have gone had they been more patient with Roethlisberger and let Batch play another game or two in the beginning?

Which gets us back to McNair and Boller. The Jets may be without Chad Pennington. The Ravens are at home. Boller has given the fans and team reason to have some confidence in him as a result of his relief appearances last year. You can see where I'm going with this.

Obviously, if McNair can play with minimal risk of re-injuring himself, he should be the guy. But in a borderline case, the 2006 Pittsburgh Steelers would seem to provide a lesson.

What's your opinion? Vote in our poll -- should the Ravens start McNair or Boller?

Every game counts now for the ravens and Boller has played well in relief appearances; Its a long season and there is no I in Team, so the Ravens should let Mcnair rest out his groin in this short week and hopefully come back next week. I have great confidence Boller has changed the corners from his stumbling ways earlier in his career.

I had my Ravens flag on the flag pole in my back yard Sunday way down here in Myrtle Beach SC. I had my Raven bird magnets on both sides of my SUV. Monday when I came to work (retired -part time bus driver in Horry County SC) all of my frieds said that Steve McNair eyes looked like a deer eyes in the headlights of an automobile. I saw the same look and the same inconsistant play Sunday as I saw in last years play-off loss to Indianapolis. I see an aging scared look in Billicks eyes also. Could he have misled the fans and the media in telling everyone that this years team is better than those in the past. He won't surrender the play calling duties to Neuheisel. Is Billick worried about his job?

Ok. This McNair Boller thing is simple. McNair is our starting quarterback. Boller has proven time and time again that he ca not run this team. The only reason that he still is on the team is because he is Billicks golden boy. Last week first and 5 from the five we run (the ball). Pick up of 3 so we are left with second and three. Instead of the smart thing and running the ball again Billick trys to make his golden boy look good and put the game in the hands of Boller. Over throws a open running back on a screen and next play fires the ball way to hard from a distance of two yards to a double covered heap. Billick needs to open his eyes and see that Boller is not the future of the team. We should have kept Olson and scratched Boller off the roster this pre season. McNair is our starter.

Play Boller...looking at the schedule ... the defense and McGahee should be able to win the next 6 games, if necessary, and get us to the Bye Week. McNair needs to be 100 % after that for the last 9 games. Let him take as long as he needs.

Steve

Play Boller--he is ready now. Remember he was thrown right into action directly from college. He has learned from that and from working with McNair--Play him Sunday

Play McNair. Maybe if he puts up another 2-3 games like that they'll finally pull him. He's lost it...see Kurt Warner for example. I'm sick of having a no arm QB. I'd rather see Boller throw thru the receivers than see McNair float them over their heads...at least Boller has room to improve, but its all down hill with McNair.

Some of you fans are absurd. we should have kept olsen and cut boller. we're talking about a guy who wasn't even on (and) couldn't make an nfl roster last year to a former first-rounder and a guy who has been (short-changed) his whole career. look what boller does when he has his whole cast around him. and i love how the "fan" before steve left out the td to heap. get over it, it's time to give boller his job back

IF McNair is still injured and IF the reason he threw so poorly in the Cincy game was because of the injury, then by all means start Boller. If Boller can't win at home with the Jets using their nth-string QB, then we'll know better whether he's learned anything from watching McNair.

What I found particularly frustrating about the Cincy game was Billick allowing McNair to continue playing when he seemed impaired by his injury. You can't expect a game plan (assuming there was one) to be executed if a key player is injured. Also, when all else fails on offense (as it often does for the Ravens), stick to running. This has been a recurring problem for this team, made especially evident in last year's playoff game.

P.S. How about conducting a poll to see whether Billick or Neuheisel should be calling the plays?

Ray,
Let's deal with one isue at a time. It's early yet.

Does it really matter who is on the field? You still have BB doing the play calling and he doesn't have a clue how to call or manage the game!

At the risk of repeating myself.....The only constant in the Ravens inept offense if Brian Billick. As long as Coach Billick is the head coach it doesn't matter if the QB is Kyle Rote or Steve Young the results will continue to be the same....win against weaker teams and lose against better teams.

Hey guys, in my opinion the Ravens should stick with Steve Mcnair. He is good, no matter how old he is. He has what I call Brett Favre syndrome. He is good. But we should go out and get Byron Leftwich, he got the jags to the playoffs, and was cruelly replaced by Garrard.

Boller came in cold on Monday night and drove us to the tying touchdown which was subsequently taken away by poor officiating. Was he perfect? No. Did he call the plays? No. Did he do his job? Yes. Did he play as well as McNair? Hard to say, but he certainly didn't play worse. If you Boller-haters hadn't seen the game and were told we had 3 turnovers due to the QB in the first quarter, you would have immediately said "Boller must have been in". Funny to now hear you say give the ball to a QB who had 4 turnovers and overthrew a bunch of receivers. That said, I am certainly no McNair-hater nor am I a fair weather fan. McNair has the experience and should start if he is healthy, but Boller has proven himself and should start if there is any question. How this offense ultimately performs is not going to be a product of our quarterback play, but our offensive line play. If they can protect the QB, whoever that is, and open holes, we will win a lot of games.

Dare I say, a voice of reason.

I'd go with Boller. The next few games are soft. I would also sit Billick and let the 40 million dollar running back RUN RUN RUN.

The Ravens should be able to handle the Jets with Boller at QB, provided Commander Ego learned anything Monday Night.

If I were Steve, The Owner, I'd have stopped by this week and reminded him that I'd spent $40MM on a guy to go to on 3rd and 1 with the lead, and that he'd best start utilizing him more.

If he does, I think there will be plenty of time for McNair and Ogden to heal.

Besides, if Ogden sees them running more, he may heal quicker.

I know Boller has been a heart breaker but the guy is healthy and can move the offense. With McGahee and Heap being used correctly Boller will be good enough to win. I really don’t think an injured McNair will perform any better than what we saw Monday.night against a Bengal’s team that’s not famous for defense.
