The Vick fallout, in no particular order

Here are some of the implications resulting from Michael Vick's indictment on federal charges related to dogfighting.

Atlanta Falcons: The whole, long-term strategy of building the franchise on the gifted quarterback is now blown to smithereens. If the Falcons haven't been bracing for this, they've been in denial. Things went from bad to worse when the federal government got involved. I've said it before and it's worth repeating. Getting rid of QB Matt Schaub to Houston was a HUGE mistake. Not only was Schaub a potential star, but he was a fresh face who could have represented a clean, new start for the franchise. Now, the Falcons are left with retreads at quarterback like Joey Harrington and just maybe Daunte Culpepper.

Marketing: By association, this is embarrassing for every commercial entity that has aligned itself with Vick. Among sponsors, AirTran has already dismissed Vick. The Humane Society of the United States is calling on the companies with which Vick has endorsement deals to do the same. * Nike reportedly declined and it will be interesting to see whether the sporting goods company suffers any backlash.

*  Two other companies that Vick had been associated with and were previously mentioned here as part of the humane society's efforts had  ended their endorsement associations with Vick when those deals expired.

The NFL: The league loved Michael Vick. He is electrifying. But it recognizes a public relations nightmare when it sees one. In a statement, the league is already characterizing the allegations in grim fashion, calling them "cruel, degrading and illegal." It said it was disappointed that Vick had even put himself in this position. Now commissioner Roger Goodell is going to be under pressure regarding Vick. Remember, Goodell suspended the Titans' Adam "Pacman" Jones without the legal process running its course. Of course, Jones was in scrape after scrape. It could be argued that Vick is something of a first-time offender, although he has had some problems of his own, such as making an obscene gesture at fans who were taunting him. As this dogfighting case evolves and if more evidence emerges, the question of disciplining Vick will come up again and again.

Maybe his nickname from "Coach Killer" needs to be changed to Franchise killer?

The thing that bothers me the most about all of this is how some people come out to defend dog fighting! Defending Vick.. understandable- they say its just an indictment not a conviction, realistically the feds would not have gotten involved, been so deliberate to check the house and check again and quietly spend all this time building their case to take such a high profile athlete to court if they didn't have the evidence. I think he will def get at least one felony conviction on the two charges... maybe plea one down, either way goodell will not let him play this year, i wouldn't be surprised if he handed out the suspension before the weekend. What I find disturbing is how openly people will come out in support of dog fighting like its ok.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assesments.

Atlanta dealing Matt Schaub was a gigantic mistake. Even if Vick is not suspended immediately (while due process runs its course), this will certainly serve as a major distraction. Joey Harrington will not be able to take the Falcons to the playoffs.

Commercially, I certainly hope all of his sponsors do the right thing and pull their associations with Vick. I can't imagine any of the them want to be associated with this type of sadistic behavior. Vick can't be making them enough money to weather this PR storm.

I am most interested to watch the NFL's reaction. I think Goodell has taken the right course in cracking down on player conduct. As a fan of the NFL since I was a boy, I have grown weary of constantly reading about players' involvement with brawls, abuse, shootings/murder, drugs, ect. I think that Vick definitely falls under the category of repeat offender. First, he gave the middle finger to his home crowd- the people who pay at least a significant portion of his salary/marketability. Second, he had that water bottle fiasco at the airport. Why on earth does anyone need a secert compartment in their water bottle if it is not for something illegal?? Now, he has this dogfighting case.

Goodell should do the right thing: Get a good feel for the evidence and the federal goverment's case, and then make a his own ruling. This would certainly send a message to all players in the NFL in regards to their conduct.

Vick always has been and always will be a thug. I wouldn't be surprised if his little brother, Marcus, is somehow involved in this dog fighting ring as well.

Unfortunatley, Arthur Blank could not see that although Vick is (or was) exciting to watch, he really never had the ability to consistantly lead the Falcons to the next level. As a result, Schaub, who is naturally a better NFL quarterback than Vick was traded away.

Atlanta Falcon's fans can only hope that Blank sees the talent in back-up quarterback DJ Shockley. DJ has a just as strong of an arm as Vick, has way more finess to his passes, has the scramble ability and is as laid back and non self-centered of a player that you will ever find in the NFL. I hope that DJ gets a chance to prove himself and Falcon's fans can finally get rid of Vick...

There seems to some major issues with the whole Vick family. If they do not get rid of him expect fans with stuffed toy dogs with nooses, and wires attached to there heads in the stands. Maybe they will add a sign with his sponsers name on the dog.

Dante a Falcon!!
Why oh why do all of these multi-millionairs surround themselfs or trust all these shady people?
Are you sure they went to classes when attending college?
If they gave out degree's for stupidity these clowns would all have PHD's.

Dogfighting is a cruel and unusual attraction to some people. It is inhumane and violent and should not be tolerated under any circumstance. With that said, I have to state the obvious when I say "Let the legal process play out. MV is innocent until proven guilty." And I believe that, really, I do. But the reality is this: a federal grand jury is very different from an independent prosecutor. They don't have an agenda (like re-election), and when they act, it's usually because they have done a broad investigation into the facts. This is especially true when accusing a very high profile person like MV, who has lots of money to throw at his lawyers and potentially derail the charges against him.
Lastly, I would like to add a word of advice to his critics. Please do not call him a thug. That label is precisely what he thinks he is. The problem is, thugs cannot have jobs. If you are a thug, you steal your way from day to day, or you deal your way from day to day, but you don't show up for work.......even if it's for tens of millions of dollars or minimum wage. Thug? NO. Ignorant? YES

Marcus and his brother are thugs, and they always have been. I dont care if he makes millions or not. He is what he is. He maybe innocent until proven guilty. But, with a 95% federal conviction rate. Which side are you willing to put your cold cash on?

How about just "dogkiller."

I own two pitbulls and it is a disgrace to the breed of what Michael Vick has done. I have no pity or compassion to a man that shows no respect to animals. My dogs are great well-trained animals. He gives the breed more of a bad reputation. He is a figure that children and others look up to as a hero. He just turned into a loser in my book. It disgusts me that he pleads he had no idea what was going on at his property. Lies and more lies. Being cruel to a helpless animal is something that you should pay for in life. Granted the breed of dog can be trained to hurt, but a majority of owners of pitbulls have loyal companions. You don't hear about other breeds like rockwellers, (dobermans), and other agressive by nature dogs. People get on a kick that says that this breed isn't suitable around children either. I have two cousins that are children and the dogs have never shown one ounce of agreession towards them. Again, Michael Vick gives the breed a bad name. I hope that the court makes him pay for these inhumane crimes.

I guess fire insurance is a pretty good idea after all.

In the article it states Vick is "electrifying"...Yeah, he's electrifying...someone should douse him in water and then electrocute him like he did those poor dogs.
POS.

So I was looking at new football cleats for my son and I figured that if I got him the Michael Vick Nikes, he'd be in real trouble if he came home from practice and said that "his dogs were tired" CB

Ouch, you get a T for that one, Charles.

Vick needs to go.As do so many other NFL players. So many sports stars are role models to our kids and some of the things these "role models" do does nothing but set a bad example for young kids.
If Vick could do the things he is accused of to animals,I would imagine he would have very little problem harming a human.
If Vick doesn't go I will not watch another game that Atlanta is playing in.

I think it is about time for sports writers and sportwcaster to become just that again. They should not be involved in convicting athletes before they have had their day in court. They should be reminded that Michael Vick is innocent until proven quilty.
