New role for Portis -- idiot
For the most part, I think Redskins running back Clinton Portis has been kind of refreshing. Dressing up in the funny outfits, speaking his mind, not taking himself too seriously and being an extraordinarily productive runner until he got banged up last year.
But yesterday, Portis showed his mouth can hit the hole while his brain is still in his ... backfield. In an an interview in Virgina, Portis came to the defense of Falcons QB Michael Vick, whose role in an alleged dog-fighting operation at a Virginia property Vick used to own is being investigated. Portis said that if Vick were punished by authorities for such involvement they would be "putting him behind bars for no reason." Washington offensive lineman Chris Samuels laughed at some of Portis' comments and later said Vick is being pilloried before being found guilty.
Here's the original interview. Video is choppy but audio fine.
Later in the day, obviously after the Redskins got a hold of him, Portis issued a statement backing off the earlier comments.

Comments
Good thing the redskins set Portis straight my jaw literally hit the floor when I read what he said about dog fighting... I will never support or favor Portis for that comment. In my opinon he needs to do a press conference to take that statement back or something SHAME on him!!!!!

Idiot is too tame a term! Wake up, Portis! Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states.

I am a veterinarian by trade and an avid Redskins and Portis fan. I hope that the entire interview was just a big joke to CP and he really doesn't feel that way. It is hard to respect and follow someone who doesn't realize the horror and cruelty that is dog fighting. The dogs are the ones that ultimately lose. If the fighting doesn't kill them, the animal shelter eventually will have to.

Portis and Samual as well as Vicks will not see me rooting for them. Portis is such an idiot. Dog fighting is a cruel use of an animal. It's a moral weak man who enjoys this kind of thing. I say fans should let the management of these men know that they are no longer welcomed. Take away their money and fame.
Posted by: 2spyC4u | May 22, 2007 10:41 AM
That just show how ignorant CP is...
Posted by: Palermo | May 22, 2007 10:46 AM
These comments re: Dog fighting simply adds to the general perception of athletes (particularly the NFL & NBA) as ignorant and somewhat socio-pathic. They should be forced to learn something in school besides how to make asses of themselves.
Posted by: Gary Evans | May 22, 2007 11:13 AM
I am so glad the Broncos traded the idiot to the Redskins! Dog fighting is cruel and by no means a normal or natural occurance in life. Oh, and lets not forget.... it is illegal!
Posted by: C. Nakai | May 22, 2007 11:26 AM
The ignorance these asses revealed was repulsive. Has the game given them brain damage or are they really that stupid? If dog fighting is a "prevalent" way of life, and I fear that it may be, I hope they throw the book at Vick to cast some light on this cruel and shameful travesty and set an example for the rest of the giggling cretins who think it's all good fun.
Posted by: Mike | May 22, 2007 11:41 AM
Just another typical stupid comment by an overpaid and under educated ball player. Dog fighting is a felony crime in 48 states and illegal in all 50 states. For good reason!
We traded C(h)amp for this guy? What a very bad trade that was.
Posted by: Md Fan | May 22, 2007 11:44 AM
I'm in shock. Just flabbergasted that CP & CS feel that the destruction of a living animal is not a crime. Just because they know police and politicians that do it. Unbelievable.

Clinton Portis should work on his language skills and stop worrying about other idiots in the league.

Corrections: first off the interview took place in Virginia not in Atlanta. Second Samuals did not agree with Portis he was awkwardly laughing at the outragous comments Portis made and he tried to spin Portis' comments into more of a "don't judge him until he is found guilty". Portis said that dog fighting is really common down in southern culture which I pray is not true. That being said I am Not a redskins fan, definitly not a portis fan, never really thought he was as good as he hypes himself up to be and he is definitly an idiot and think he should critisized by every media outlet and fans... just know the facts next time.
Did you even hear the interview Ordine or are you just posting blogs of what you hear around the office? terrible reporting, sounds more like grade school rumors that get changed everytime you hear them, next post is going to have every member of the redskins team being interviewed by the Hawaii times saying that they support animal cruelty.

Slim
You are correct. Portis was speaking in an interview with TV station WAVY in the Norfolk area. Correction noted and made.
As far as Chris Samuels is concerned (not Samuals as you suggest), his contribution was certainly not as inflammatory as that of Portis and we made more specific exactly what his response was.
But he is a grown man who attended college and is used to being in front of the media. Shouldn't his response to all this be something other than giggling at his teammate's remarks. And yes, I did see the video. It's being posted for readers to judge for themselves. It's a little choppy but you can hear the audio. And I thank you because your note prompted me to do that.

Everyone relax. Clearly, CP and CS were joking around. Clinton didn't strangle a puppy here. He was simply talking out of his a**. I am not a Portis fan because of his humane nature towards all living thinds; it's because he is a beast on the field (no pun intended). If Vick did what he did, then that is one thing, but don't let the media convince you to crusify CP. Imagine if you had a mic in your face all day, but i guess eveyone here never says anything inappropriate.

Been a skins fan since I was 7. But now 20yrs later I’m embarrassed to say I am. Not because of their poor performance but the fact that these guys can be that dumb and make that much money. The real dumb guy is I for buying an authentic CP jersey. Lost all respect.. Hope it was joke.

Bad Trade?
Remember who we had running before CP?
Trug Cadidate.
All of a sudden he was a bad trade. I am positive that you felt the same way two years ago when his legs helped get us into the playoffs. Champ never got us there.
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 2:03 PM
I stand corrected.
Thanks Bill

Well, what did you think coming from CP? After all this is someone who does things out of the ordinary(costumes to interviews), so, why expect him to say something out of the ordinary. Oh yeah, listen to the way he talks(mutters)...you can't expect an educated/informed comment from such a source.
Posted by: RickyT | May 22, 2007 2:38 PM
These guys are scumbags through and through. The management didn't call and set them straight either, no one is going to be able to do that, management simply told them what they should say to the media in a vein attempt to fix things. It also wasn't a joke of any kind, these guys were serious and they meant every ignorant word of it and if you’re alright with what they said because they can run quicker than some other guy while carrying a ball, than you're a loser too.

with guys like Portis and Samuels on their team it's going to be another losing year for Coach Gibbs and his low life idiots..
Go Patriots , a classy tesm

How 'bout that ! Two more overpaid lame brained athletes with big mouths and mush for brains, Check them out...it sounds like Samuels may have a dog in the pit !
Posted by: Marc Whaley | May 22, 2007 2:59 PM
I'm sorry Justin, I guess you were looking for moral leadership from pro athletes. Don't be so naive. I am a fan because he RUNS, not because i find him intelligent. When his legs break down and he can't play anymore, then i will cheer for a different REDSKIN. I also will NOT be reading any publishing from Portis or Samuels after their careers have ended.
Oh yeah, as for the loser thing. I happen to be a rather successful young man, who enjoys to DEBATE. I don't put myself on a pedestal and say people are scum or losers. I only point out when people (that’s right, justin, you) are being self-righteous. Congrats!
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 3:02 PM
Bad trade. Yes it was. Anybody in the league outside the Redskins will tell you that.
Running backs are more commen than elite defensive backs with man-2-man cover skills.
That trade was a no-brainer for the Broncos.

I don't know what Michael Vick may or may not have known about the dog fighting if he didn;t actually live there just owned the place it's possible that he is innocent, so let's wait and see what happens with the case. As far as Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels goes, I alm also from the south--NC- and one of the biggest animal lovers there are, unfortuneately, there is some truth to what he said about the dog fighting down here. I personally haven't seen it, or do I condone it but I know it's here and it will also probably stay forever. That is very sad to me but true. But CP acted like a big jerk saying those things, like it was no big deal, and CS laughing about it, like it was a game of kick-ball or something.Even if you are not a big dog fan show some respect for LIFE whether it's human or animal LIFE. Remember what your parents use to tell you? If you can't say anything good don''t say anything at all. JULIE IN NC.

I was a huge fan of Clinton Portis, especially when he was with the Denver Broncos. NO LONGER A FAN OF HIM OR THAT SAMUEL DUDE....THEY BEEN HIT IN THE HEAD ONE TOO MANY TIMES. THEIR COMMENTS MAKE ME WANT TO PUKE. There is NO room in our society for people that support and/or see nothing wrong with dog fighting. NO ROOM.
Posted by: MrsConnieMotherCat | May 22, 2007 3:29 PM
Have all of you animal advocates forgot about Preakness?
Tell me those horses arn't fighting (racing) for their lives.
Long Live Double Standards!
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 3:33 PM
SkinsAllDay....dog fighting is a far leap from horse racing. And you know what, you are right...but in a different sense. I remember Barbaro and the suffering he went through. But dog fighting, the dogs fight to LIVE and usually one doesn't get up and then it is over. Personally, I don't agree with using animals for any human interest and/or sport. I still cringe when I see old westerns where the horse looks like it is doing a summersaw...did THEY have to be put down because of a movie? THE WHOLE WORLD IS OUT OF CONTROL AND IT ONLY KEEPS GETTING WORSE! And it is people like CP & CS that add fuel to the fire. IGNORANCE.
Posted by: MrsConnieMotherCat | May 22, 2007 3:52 PM
I can't believe that people are more upset with CP than Vick.
As for the trade post - I agree that it is harder to find an elite DBs than elite HBs. However, if you remember what the TEAM needed more, then it was not a bad trade. Pro sports is about what is best for the team, not who has the best people.
Redskins before CP - no playoffs
After CP - playoffs
there is a no-brainer
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 3:56 PM
SKINSALLDAY, I hope you’re just a kid that has nothing better to do. Horses racing? You have to be kidding.. Come to think of it you're probably Clinton Portis. That’s something he would say.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2007 4:27 PM
Wow, I can't believe how ignorant Portis is. Good thing the Reskins pay him to run around a field all day and not his brain power. How about doing everyone a favor Portis and just shut your pie-hole since you sound like a bloody idiot. You may even want to invest some of your salary and get an education because you even sound stupid when they quote you.
Posted by: MD | May 22, 2007 4:28 PM
SkinsAllDay....Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels PUT THEMSELVES INTO THE FIRE....as far as Vick is concerned, I believe Justice will prevail and if he is guilty, he will be punished accordingly. However, the laws for animal cruelty are not near strict enough and I believe they should be a felony. ANYONE THAT CAN HURT AN ANIMAL, A PERSON WOULD BE THE NEXT STEP UP. PERFECT EXAMPLE: Look at Jeffrey Dahmer. CASE CLOSED.
Posted by: MrsConnieMotherCat | May 22, 2007 4:34 PM
That was a great counterpoint from the guy who was bold enough to not leave a name. You have successfully attacked my premises and therefore proven my conclusion to be unsound. Now, go read a logic book.
I am not a kid, I am an operations manager. I have an office and plenty to do all day; I simply find debating this subject more fun. So, no name, you will not find it a coincidence when i don't post after 5:30pm because I will be at happy hour. Thanks for your rebuttal, it was worthless.
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 4:48 PM
No Name-
I am not sure what you are confused about. Do you know what happens behind the scenes of horse racing?
Ever eat veal?
Animal cruelty happens everywhere, and not that i condone it, but if Portis doesn't think it is a big deal, then he should be allowed to SAY so (First Amendment, baby).
Everyone turns a blind eye to the cruelty being served up in KFC buckets, but want to have Portis tarred and feathered (terrible pun, i apologize). All he did was make a dumb comment. If anything, this messageboard should be addressing Vick as the (deleted), he's the alleged guilty party.
Posted by: SkinsAllDay | May 22, 2007 5:07 PM
I agree with SKINSALLDAY. The Skins already had top-notch DBs, but they needed an elite RB and they got one in CP. As far as dog fighting, I have seen several fights and they are no different than boxing. And for the record, it is NOT a fight to the death. CP and CS are athletes, not animal rights activists. They are entitled to their opinions even if the comments are not popular with the public.
Posted by: Roscoe | May 22, 2007 8:05 PM
I AGREE WITH CLINTON PORITS. IF YOU'RE A REDSKINS FAN. ITS CALLED BACK UP YOU PLAYERS. LOSERS
Posted by: josh hutchins | May 22, 2007 10:58 PM
Ha-ha now I feel bad, I may have been a little harsh in my last post. Many apologies! I think I am most surprised not so much by the supporters of Portis but their arguments! I wish I could believe that Portis was joking but I just don't see it that way. And saying that dog fighting is like boxing? OK boxing is a sport, competition between humans to meet a basic instinct of dominance. Dogs fight instinctivley for dominance. the difference? THE CHOICE. Human boxers are not bred under cruel conditions and forced into a life of violence. What would you say if someone took your children at birth and turned them into violent killing machines? That person would be sadistic, and so are people that support animals being raised to fight. These dogs are probably never going to be properly adjusted. Does Clinton Portis have a first amendment right to say what he wants? of course. Does that mean he is safe from judgement? No. Rich saddistic weirdo.
Posted by: Slim | May 23, 2007 8:34 AM
MrsConnieMotherCat...for the one Jeff Dahmer example, there are hundreds of thousands of cases of animal cruelty which never lead to human cruelty,...so, case not closed.
Also, are you against the right to speak your mind, because that is what portis did. He had NOTHING to do with the animal cruelty, and since this messageboard is in reference to Portis, animal cruelty really has nothing to do with it. This debate is about freedom of speach.

Horseracing & veal? ROFL to different animals. Can’t wait to hear your next analogy.
BTW enjoy happy hour?

Michael Vick. Who cares? He is an overprice hood, who has shown that with his repeated antics. But, I am not a Falcons fan, so I care less about what he says, then what CP does and says.
People need to behave like its the National Football League and not the National Felony League.
Posted by: Md Fan | May 23, 2007 11:50 AM
I realize you all of feigning indignation on this matter so you can seem enlightended and PC, but give it a rest. You all know you participate and it is a widely accepted behaviour with deep traditional roots and as american as baseball (baseball sucks by the way). I doubt you all act so abhored when you are collecting on your bets. May the best dog win!
Posted by: C Mung | May 23, 2007 5:33 PM
So according to C Mung "dog fighting is a widely accepted behavior." Maybe you are from one of those "Deliverance" states where other things just as depraved and deviant are also an accepted behavior. The rest of the civilized world does not consider animal torture entertainment. I have already written to the Senators of Virginia and the HSUS and I will keep working at this.
