Is Chael Sonnen the real joke?
Ultimate Fighting Championship Middleweight fighter Chael Sonnen is talking more trash than a highlight reel of an episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).
He said on fightmagazine.com that “185 pounds is the toughest division in the business so if you are going to go after the belt go after the tough one. But I would love to get a night off and go beat up some [of the 205 pound division guys]. For God sake, 205 had a karate guy [Lyoto Machida] that was their champion. I mean that weight class is a joke”.
My opinion is that Sonnen is trying to set up his next fight. He realizes that he does not have a shot against Anderson Silva. Therefore, he is setting up his next fight in the light heavyweight division.
If he moved up in weight he could face Lyoto Machida or Quinton Jackson, and either one of them would destroy him.
This is the same tactic that Sonnen used before the Nate Marquardt fight at UFC 109. He talked trash about Anderson Silva before he had even fought his opponent. He said on mmafighting.com that Silva was “a bum” and ripped Silva for wearing earrings and pink shirts.
After those comments, Sonnen was given a shot at the middleweight championship title against Silva, which will take place at UFC 117 in Oakland, Calif., in August.
Chael Sonnen, here are some of the fighters in the 205-pound division, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Thiago Silva, Jon Jones, Quinton Jackson, Brandon Vera, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Forrest Griffin. You would not have a chance with any of these fighters.
Is Sonnen blowing smoke? Or do you think he could beat any of the light heavyweight fighters?

Chael is cool! I love his remarks and observations. Chael is for real baby! Nate The Great is one of my favorites, Chael dominated him. How can you overlook him mister?

Chael's the man, and he's right (in general) about the 205 LB division. He'll decision that front-runner Silva in five rounds if Silva's cardio can hang for that long???

Dana White has made it pretty clear to Anderson Silva that he expects Silva's killer instinct back, and the clowning out. Chael's comments are amusing, but also dangerous, as he is not really in Silva's league, should Silva show up without his clown suit. And to judge someone based on style? In this day and age? Come on. UFC ought to have proved by now that it's the fighter, not the style, that's important. Machida would slaughter Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen is a joke. He is going to get smoked by Silva and, if he moves up to 205, he is going to get smoked by every opponent in that division also. He will then have to return to the minor leagues (WEC).

Chael doesn't stand a chance with the dragon! He got hit with a fluke punch and would still be champ! In my opinion Lyoto Machida is the best light heavyweight. and as far as his Karate, it is a hybrid stlye of Karate like it was ment to be when it was created. Don't forget he holds a black belt in BJJ! Long live the Dragon! Don't talk shit on Machida Karate because it the truth!

Just want to defend the WEC for a moment as it was referred to in another comment as the "minor leagues". The WEC is VERY legitimate. Their only overlapping weightclass with the UFC is at 155 and WEC fighters are incredible. The competition level is super high and it is simply a league with lighter weight classes, not "minor leagues". The WEC eliminated their heavier weight classes a ways back. Just wanted to clarify as I don't want other to think that when they watch WEC events that it is by any means "lesser" than the UFC. Some of the best pound for pound fighters are with the WEC. Not picking at anyone, just clarifying.

WEC is definately not the minor leagues. It probably has p4p the best fighter in Jose Aldo. I'd love to see him move up against the 155ers in the UFC because I think he could win that belt too.
Phi,
I agree with you. I believe Jose Aldo is the second best fighter in the world. Only his stablemate Anderson Silva is better.
