UFC 104 worth a buy?

UFC 104 is this weekend and outside of the Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua bout for the light heavyweight championship, there’s not a whole lot of intrigue.

I’m excited for the Joe Stevenson-Spencer Fisher fight, but the rest of the card? Take it or leave it.

I’m curious to see how the PPV sells since it’s headlined by a pair of Brazilians. Both great fighters but I’m curious how the casual fan will support it. I’m still on the fence. This may be one show I catch at a sports bar instead of shelling out the 50 bucks.

I wish we could see the Yushin Okami-Chael Sonnen fight, but what are you going to do? Cain Velasquez and Ben Rothwell could be a decent fight, but not for second billing.

I don’t know though ... if PRIDE Shogun shows up, that main event might be worth it.

Are you kidding me? are you asking if this is worth a buy? I would say its worth more than the Belfort/Franklin 103 ppv.

Did you really say Cain Velasquez vs. Ben Rothwell "isnt worth second billing"? Do you even kno who either of these guys are. That is a huge freaking fight right there! Dana White said if Cain can beat Rothwell that would put him right at the top of contenders for Brocks HW title.

Im wondering how big of an mma fan you really are......

and the Yushin Okami-Chael Sonnen fight might be aired on spike during the prelims depending on how quick the fights are.

Really? You are that geeked for this card? You're kidding yourself if you think this card is on par with some of the cards the UFC has put together in the past six months.

And the Rothwell-Velasquez fight could be an entertaining one, but it's not nearly as big as you're making it out to be. First, being "right at the top" of the list of contenders is not being the top contender. There is no way one win over Rothwell gets Velasquez the next shot at Lesnar. He'll probably have to go through at least one more fight.

White said the same thing re: contenders and Lesnar when Nog fought Couture. And Nog is definitely getting a shot at Lesnar before Velasquez.

Velasquez is a tremendous wrestler but his standup against Kongo was atrocious. He spent the first 30 seconds of his round getting drilled in the face before taking Kongo down. If Kongo wasn't so awful on the ground, he might not even win that.

And that Kongo win is arguably the best between Rothwell and Velaquez.

It will be an entertaining fight but no one is getting a title shot from this.

Yes, Nog will get the first shot at Carwin, Im picking him over Brock next month. I would then think that the winner of Cain/Rothwell would fight the titleholder. If I were Joe Silva I would then book the winner of Kongo/Mir for the next title shot.

Sorry, I just think this card is bigger than what youre building it to be. Rua an an AMAZING fighter but just had really bad luck his first 2 ufc fights again Forrest and Coleman. If anyone is able to beat Lyoto, I think Shogun is the guy! Man i miss his PRIDE days :(

If the ppv sucks, ill come back sunday morning and apologize.

If we get PRIDE Shogun, Shogun-Machida alone will be worth the purchase. Just too many question marks around Rua still.

I agree though, I miss his PRIDE days. I want that Shogun in the UFC.

I respect your opinion on the card. We can agree to disagree. It's not that I don't like the Velasquez-Rothwell fight, it just doesn't feel like it should be a co-main event.

Although shouldn't Dos Santos figure into your heavyweight mix? Especially if he beats Gonzaga? I'm not thrilled about Mir-Lesnar III in your scenario (still thinks Lesnar handles Carwin).

UFC 103 was injury-riddled, so I gave it a pass. I feel like some of the other co-main events felt a little bigger. At least Jardine and Thiago Silva had some big fights under their belts and Anderson Silva-Forrest Griffin before that as a co-main event was huge. It just feels like this one falls a little flat.

I will definitely be watching, though.

Come watch the fight at Buffalo Wild Wings in White Marsh Mark! The atmosphere is incredible for these events and the fight is free!!

i totally forgot about the Dos Santos/Gonzaga fight. I hope Junior wins, Im not a fan of Gonzaga. I dont see him sticking around for too much longer. Imm bookmark this site so I can come back after the ppv and chat about it.

sorry if i was harsh with you on my first post.

I'm not a huge Gonzaga fan either. I feel like he became a top heavyweight fighter through good timing primarily. He caught Cro Cop before people realized he wasn't Cro Cop anymore.

He's lost to a lot of good fighters but doesn't have one impressive win. I think Dos Santos takes him down.

yeah, Cro Cop. Theres another guy I want back in his PRIDE form! :( that gonzaga/crocop fight was UGLY.

Has anyone ever noticed that the cards that seem less stacked than others, usually turn out to have pretty good fights.

Here are a few good reasons to watch UFC 104:
1. You get to see Machida take on a light heavyweight with a ton of experience in Rua. If Pride Rua shows up its gonna be a short night for Shogun. Aggressive isn't a good plan against Machida.

2. Cain Velasquez needs this win to make an argument for a title shot. Rothwell finally makes his UFC debut against one hell of an opponent.

3. Anthony Johnson is fighting, so that one won't go the distance. Someone is getting knocked...probably the other guy.

I'm done trying to sell this fight for the UFC, does anyone know of a place in the city showing the fights tonight? Green Turtle and the ESPN Zone aren't.

dana and his cronies screwed another fighter shogun won that fight

UFC 104 was definitely worth the buy. I buy every UFC fight as well as the Strikeforce fights at Don't Know Tavern and I thought that this was a loss leader but we ended up getting a great crowd.

I am looking forward to next month when Fedor fights on November 7th, then UFC 105 on the 14th and UFC 106 with Lesnar on Novermber 21st. Should be a great month of fights.

It was a somber mood in the pressroom after UFC 104. In the night’s headliner, 31 year-old Lyoto Machida defended his title--the first time in two years a reigning 205lb.
