The Gina Carano reality

Thank God Gina Carano is hot. Because if she wasn’t, there wouldn’t be nearly as much interest in women’s MMA. In fact, most fans of women’s MMA are really just fans of Carano. And that doesn’t change just because she got mauled in the first round of the title fight with Cris "Cyborg" Santos.

It may hurt her promotional value somewhat, but do you really think the casual fan cares about whether or not Gina Carano is a champion? I don’t think the casual women’s MMA fan is breaking down fighting styles and salivating over dream matchups of the top pound-for-pound women’s fighters. They like Gina Carano because she’s hot and she’s a decent fighter.

This isn’t just a problem for women’s MMA either. The LPGA, women’s tennis and the WNBA all deal with it. The casual sports fan only shows an interest if the ladies involved are, well, attractive.

Is it chauvinistic? Of course. It’s not fair but it’s reality. Especially when it comes to the pay scale. Feminists may raise hell when Gina Carano does a photo shoot for Maxim but that’s how female athletes get paid. They aren’t going to get LeBron James money from Nike. They aren’t going to get the same purse for winning a tournament or headlining a pay-per-view. Female athletes don’t have to just be good to be relevant, they have to be attractive.

The sad part is that Gina Carano’s star is almost as high as it can be. She doesn’t earn much more respect by destroying solid competition because there just isn’t enough of it on the women’s side. Her popularity is now directly tied to the popularity of the sport.

She may not be the best women’s mixed martial artist, but she is the hottest and that’s what matters most.

It's pigs like you that make women's MMA what it is. "Just cause she is hott" is a ridiclous reason to respect her. And, yes, there are women who care about fighting styles, and probably know more about it than you.

Actually, yes she is the best
WOMAN in the sport. She has thus far not chosen to shoot her rear end full of male horse steroids and become a 'SHE-MALE'
Can the same be said for her competition? Is females fighting what is basically a male fair to her?

I am sick of guys like you who look at the beauty FIRST. Yes, she is a beautiful girl but it DOESN'T matter if she is attractive or not, She is a great fighter, maybe not as good as Cyborg but a great fighter and THAT should be the first thing you write about and MAYBE add the beauty in last...your a pig! Cyborg is loved in her country...not for her looks.

I completely agree. I didn't even know that women's MMA even existed before I saw Gina Carano (god she is sexy) on a promotional clip while watching TV. However, since then I have become kind of a fan of the sport and other fighters besides Gina. I hope to see her come back and fight again, but I think she will definitely need to bulk up to fight Cyborg again.

I completely agree--there's a long history of attractive female athletes getting more attention because of their looks: Danica Patrick, Anna Kournikova, etc.

Danica Patrick is my favorite example--she sucks as a race car driver, but I love those Go Daddy commercials of hers. Great little body.

i dont think hottness matter. gina is pretty good at fighter, but she notthat expirce yet in afew years she will be one of the best female fighters. but right she doing ok. i think she great. pluse probly one of the nicest fighters out there. no matter what whappends i am always going to be a fan of gina carano

F you man! How dare you say that the thing that matters most is that Gina Carano is hot. And one another thing you a-hole. You say female athletes don't have to be good at what they do they just have to look good. Well you are absolutely wrong. Look at Cris Cyborg, she has fans of whom were cheering for her to win Saturday's fight, and people consider her to be really manly and unattractive. How about you start thinking before you post things on the internet you idoit.

Nice hook article. What does her doing photo shoots have anything to do with the rest of the post? Don't throw in mindless filler into your posts, also there is a ton of solid competition for her to face in the women's ranks it's just a bunch of them aren't given a chance in the full pro circuit as women's mma in that area is still a fledgling. She's more than a "decent" fighter, I'm sure you've never actually trained in any combat sport so you wouldn't know what a "decent" fighter is, but it's ok to be a casual fan as long as you don't fling unsubstantiated nouns at people.

What do you mean she's the hottest and that's what matter's....your a douche!!!
I understand what your trying to say but you are saying it exactly like a CHAUVANIST!!! You have no idea just how big the female support system is for Gina. She has inspired so many women out there & let them know that women CAN make it in a guys world! If your getting offered good money to do a photo shoot (which were all 'decent' shoots) why wouldn't you do it, girls still got to make a living and she also did them to promote the sport of women's MMA. Plus Gina got paid well for this fight! Just because Gina had her first loss, doesnt mean the number in her supporters has gotten smaller.
Men...well, you just never know, half of them only think with their penis!!!

Mark, what can I say? You hit the nail on the head in every way. It's an unfortunate truth, but it's a truth nonetheless.

If Gina's female support system is so vast, why is it that Strikeforce was promoting her looks as part of the fight? I think every press release they sent out mentioned the Maxim stuff.

Answer- because that fight wouldn't have been as big a draw if they marketed simply to her female fan base.

It's sort of like why the LPGA sent out a memo a few years ago telling players to dress sexier. Do you think anything like that would ever happen in the NBA/NHL/PGA/etc? Does the promotional materials for guys fights include the magazine covers or photoshoots they've posed for?

There's a reason.

Quite shooting at the messenger!!! Mark is only discribing the reality in sports that is that generally woman's athletics do not recieve the attention and most crucially the money that mens athletics do. They see their greatest pay days when you have a combination of talented competitors who are also attractive. That's just the way it is. You can try to debate the way it is, but don't call people names for just trying to describe reality. If you have a problem dealing with it, than fine. Live in a fantasy world if you makes you feel better, but womans sports don't generate the buzz that mens sports do and likely never will. The best they can hope for is that their talented competitors are also hot so that they can generate the most interests.

I agree...Gina Carano is hot and is the face of womens mma. the only reason you hear about womens mma actually. Sounds unfair and baised blah blah blah, but its true.

My only huge problem with your article is your calling Gina Carano a "decent" fighter. Pound for pound, in her class and category, she's an excellent fighter, regardless of the result of her fight with Santos, which was a great MMA fight.
