UFC 101: Anderson Silva is amazing

There’s plenty from UFC 101 to discuss, including B.J. Penn’s masterful title defense, bogus quick stoppages, fighters with poor gameplans and new ring girls, but the main story line of UFC 101 is Anderson Silva.

Un-freaking-believable. Tonight we saw vintage Anderson Silva. He wasn’t fighting a no-name either, he was fighting a top-5 light heavyweight. A man one fight removed from being the light heavyweight champion. A guy who recorded back-to-back wins over Shogun and Rampage Jackson.

And he didn’t belong in the same Octagon as Silva. Silva was faster, stronger and outclassed Griffin in every way. Silva looked like he was having fun, he looked loose and he looked like the "Spider" most fans were expecting against Patrick Cote and Thales Leites.

Incredible. At this point, what’s next for Silva? Dan Henderson again? No one else at 185 has a chance with Silva, not even Demian Maia. There are few people at 205 that would be tough fights for Silva. Lyoto Machida is at the top of that list, but the two friends have said they would never fight each other.

And, for those new fans (or haters) out there calling this a fixed fight, get over yourselves. Forrest Griffin got his butt kicked and was rocked twice before getting knocked out. It could not have been any plainer. If the UFC was ever going to fix a fight, it would be to have Griffin win. He’s the company guy and would be a great face for the sport. He’s probably even a bigger PPV draw than Silva. There is no way this was a fixed fight.

It was nice to see Silva break in some English during the post-fight interview. It stinks he hasn’t learned the language better because he should be a huge star at this point. He could be the Tiger Woods or Roger Federer of MMA but will never get the marketing push if he has to go through a translator for everything.

Anderson Silva. Wow.

Okay, I now think Forrest may be completely done in the UFC. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions and Silva really is that good, but I'm now thinking that I was originally correct in that Forrest took MAJOR damage from Rashad. We'll only really know if Forrest fights another decent guy and what happens there, but I think it's looking badly for him. I really and truly thought Rashad could've killed Forrest if he had hit him about 3 or 4 more times at the end of that fight. I think he was badly, badly concussed...to the point that he may never recover. I think he's in the realm of Liddell and Wanderlei where their jaws are now glass from either massive knockouts or a series of knock outs. He's been in some brutal fights and the brain can only take so much damage before you start showing signs. It's a shame because I really do love Forrest and his style of fighting, but it's not very conducive to a long career. And what was up with Forrest running out of the Octagon after the loss...that was very un-Forrest like. I really liked this event though-minus that horrible stoppage.

I knew Anderson Silva was gonna win this fight but I never expected it was gonna be this easy for him. Ever since his debut I saw his timing was perfect, he can take a hit and his punches are like sledge hammers. We all know Forrest can take a punch but I think Anderson hit Forrest so hard that by the 3 time he really broke something. For those of you who don't know Forrest made it into Ultimate Fighter after knocking out the guy that broke his arm in a match Dana scouted for the show. I think his next match-up will be Rampage or Jardine just because of styles.

Pathetic like every PPV Silva fight ive seen Forrest took a dive why? where was the post fight interview? all I saw was him joggin off like Forrest Gump what a rip off

Wow,
Anderson Silva is amazing. He must train with his hands tied to his sides, and dodge punches, because his movements left Forest's punches just centimeters from his face on just about every punch attempt. Anderson is better right now in MMA and more exciting to me than Tyson was in his rise in boxing, plus he is mentally stable. Learn a little english, and he is an empire. I am still moved by his performance. I love Forest also, he is a talented fighter. One who loves to get his face beaten in, but with that last punch from Silva, Forest raised his hand as if saying, NO MORE PUNCHES. Anderson's punches were technically perfect, not the brawling punches Forest is used to.

Am I the only one who has mixed feelings on this fight. Silva vs. Griffin is the only fight in a long time that I couldn't wait to see and, at the same time, never wanted to see. On the one hand, I have always thoroughly enjoyed watching Anderson slay fighters in the Octagon. However, I share that universal love for Forrest Griffin that every UFC fan has.

I just know that I want to continue being a part of witnessing the creation of one of the biggest MMA fighters in history (of course, Silva already is, but he's not done yet). I guess I just didn't want it to be at the expense of Forrest Griffin.

Y'know?

Wow.......Forrest Griffin is not done.....and he was actually winning against Rashad, until he broke his hand. You have no idea what your talking about. Yes he did get his ass kicked last night, but to say he's done is a retarted statment.

Forrest is one of the most exciting ,humble, and nicest guys in the ufc, I really believe Silva has been holding back his talents and really let go lastnight to prove and show Roy jones jr. he's the best fighter in the world. There isn't anyone left in either weight div, I'd like to see Anderson shut Brock Lesnar's redneck mouth, and I believe he could, he's so elusive I think before Brock got a hand on him he would have hit him 6 or 7 times, come on Dana make it happen

Griffin was outclassed, but he also made the mistake of playing the striking game with Silva. He should have looked for takedowns and tried to counterpunch (emphasis on tried). As for him being done, don't count on it. He's a big name in the UFC and the Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale earned him a spot for life in the organization. Apparently he ran out after because of a dislocated jaw and loss of hearing in one ear. He's also a proud guy, so he probably wanted to get the immediate medical attention away from the crowd. Regardless, he's beat Rampage and Rua (albeit a broken Rua) and gave Tito Ortiz a close fight. Look for a rematch with Tito this fall and maybe a rematch with Keith Jardine. Plus Griffin vs. Rich Franklin is a great fight.

Why do people always say some one is "done" in the UFC if they lose. Guess what Forrest is still top 10 light heavy weight in all of MMA. Big deal he lost two straight fights (against top competition I might add). He can still beat 90% of LHW fighters in the UFC. So does this mean they all should leave as well? Same goes for Chuck Liddell. Allthat has been proven is that chuck is not top 10. He still can compete in the UFC, maybe at mid-level but he doesn't need to retire.

Rich Franklin, in both the fights against Anderson Silva, after a few strikes from Silva, looked fatigued, just like Forrest did in the UFC 101 fight. Does it mean that the strikes from Silva are incredibly accurate and powerful, than what it looks to the naked eye?

Anderson Silva be like Tiger Woods? Are you kidding me? Anderson Silva is an arrogant jerk. He will never be a fan favorite. He is an amazing fighter, but he will always be the bad guy. To be like Tiger Woods you have to think before you speak. That's not Silva.

I only have one thing to say about last nights fight. "Run Forrest Run"!!!!!!

Silva is very humble. If you understood Portuguese, you'd know that already.

everyone talking s**t about forest cant be to good of a ufc fan. he has put on the best fights ufc has seen including the #1 fight in ufc history. come on. give the man a break. anyone can be beat at any time. he is still one of the best. noone talked bad about the warrior before last night.

Silva not arrogant, he's very humble. He just like to give the fans a good show. I feel sorry for forest, but his career is far from over. I would like to see Silva fight Machida, but that's not gonna happen. Maybe he'll fight GSP.

Anderson is a Personal friend of my families, my wife and mother in law are from curitiba and they both teach muay thai and karate, the reason i say this is because, The first fight i ever saw Silva fight in the ufc i knew he would go undefeated i said it over and over, the reason i knew, is because my family told me he is a perfectionist, and has been studying martial arts since he could walk and his love for philosophy adds to it, he could be undefeated for many years to come! stay tuned!

RFR? That is just too funny. Look, you can compare Silva to Tigar Woods, it is befitting. Tiger after all isn't the best role model for being a good sport. Silva was an azz with his taunting style but hey, caught up in the moment, he realized "hey, my style against his? No match". Period. I knew it would be a blow out, just not quite THAT much. Wow. Don't take anything away from Forest, as said he lost two in a row but to top competition. In sports, there is such a thing as a matchup issue. He will be back, just never again against Silva. EVER! I thought he had a broken jaw when he left the ring.
AS is the best fighter in the world, no doubt about it! Put him against Lesnar, he always liked to be an AZZ in college when he wrestled for the Gophers against Iowa at CHA.

They're are called heavy hands. He has done it many times. You look at the videos. He hits guys with what do not look like knock out punches and they drop, lights out. You can't train to have heavy hands, but his are the heaviest in mma. Force equals mass times accelleration. If you have a heavy hand (bone weight) going the same speed as someone elses light hand, then you generate more force and knockout power. He has heavy hands.

It's not that the strikes wear you out. Its the combonation of being "punch drunk" slowing you down and the whiffing of the power punches missing that are thrown at Anderson. Not only that but trying to pull out of his clinch could tire you out as well.

Any chance Silva decides to fight beyond the last 3 fights left on his contract?

you are a jackass.
silva is indeed one of the best, but:
griffin is the ufc's poster guy? no!!!
all they talk about is silva. good grief.
you are a moron.

Interesting note: 3 TUF winners---Kendall, Amir, and Forrest lost last night.

What was Forrest's game plan? To stand with Silva? Really?

Did anyone really believe that Forrest could trade with him? Who has he traded with and won besides Bonner? Rampage knocked him down when they traded. Jardine and Rashad easily knocked him out. For as early as his career is, his chin has become very questionable.

Lutter and Hendo exposed tiny holes in Silva's game. Get him down then pound it out. In the UFC, this has happened, but nobody could finish it.

Forrest's game plan was horrible, and it made the casual fan question the legitimacy of the fight. I agree with Mark's logic on why it wasnt' fixed, but that knockout looked extremely weak to the casual fan. He was knocked out for sure. My buddy was there and said that he had trouble running straight on his way back to the locker room.

As a Forrest fan, I was extremely let down. Not only do I question his camp's intelligence, but I question his heart too. And, that's something I never thought I'd say.

Anything can happen in a fight.Forrest is not through unless he wants to be,Silva is incredibly talented as we have seen before.Heavy Hands is all about punching technique not bone mass.

Once again, some of you prove to be very unintelligent and immature with your name calling. Nothing like "internet tough guys". Is that how you respond in regular life when someone says something you don't agree with? You call them names? It makes YOU sound like the foolish one whether your point is valid or not. I hope that most of you are absolutely right and that Forrest still has a long, fruitful career in the UFC. Forrest is everything that's "right" about the sport and regardless if you believe it or not, I do love him. That doesn't change the fact that taking horrific knockouts does permanent damage to your body and mind that is very hard to recover from...especially when you take them in series. His opponents were world class-no one is disputing that, but it doesn't change the fact that multiple really bad knockouts take their toll on your career. His style of fighting is not conducive to longevity, but that doesn't mean I don't like him-it's what makes him exciting to watch every time out. It's no different from a running back who is extremely powerful but not very elusive...their careers are usually shortened because of it-just ask Terrell Davis. I'm also not saying that this is ALWAYS the case because there are always guys out there that will defy conventional thought. However, you are mistaking analyzing truths for not liking someone. For those of you that think name calling and anger are appropriate responses to disagreeing, I hope you grow up enough to make it through life because very angry people tend to have their struggles. By arguing and discussing with an open mind, you will quickly find that you can learn much more effectively than just having an opinion and sticking with it regardless of fact (I'm not referring to this particular discussion, but ANY discussion). Forrest is an INCREDIBLY honest and up front guy who is also extremely intelligent and I would almost guarantee that while he may not agree with my assessment, he would certainly consider it as a possibility. Narrow mindedness will not get you very far in life. Changing the subject, I hope you guys got to see the WEC card last night, it was absolutely fantastic and I think I now look forward to them as much as the UFC events. Peace and Respect.

There is a huge lesson in this fight that everyone is missing, and portends a next step in the evolution of MMA fighting styles.

NOT GETTING HIT AND USING EVASIVE TACTICS WITH COUNTERSTRIKING IS A FIGHTING SKILL that has been underappreciated in MMA. More to the point, Dana White caters to the bloodlust of the fans by encouraging a culture of "Fighters With Heart" by always seeking matchups that cater to fan tastes for toe-to-toe brawls. The first Griffin and Bonnar fight was voted by fans as the iconic "#1 Fight of All Time."

Both Machida and Silva have developed evasive striking skills for a couple of decades. Just think Roy Jones, Jr and Floyd Mayweather. These guys received the same criticisms of "fixed fights" and "boring fights." But they were Master's of their art, as are Silva and Machida.

Fight trainers are more and more going to move towards their fighter being able to GET HIS HEAD OUT OF THE WAY, and maybe while you're at it, get your own shot in.

It may not be quite as exciting, but it is more masterful.

I just hope that the fight matchups loosen up enough to not exclude fighters who better their game by adding legitimate evasive tactics to their fight plan, instead of treating them like NO-Heart-Pussies because they manage not to get hit.

Forrest is the same quality fighter and wonderful guy he has always been. He was just outclassed by an opponent with many more years actual fighting experience. I still love Forrest.

There is NO WAY that fight was fixed because:

1) Forrest has too much integrity and class to do such a thing;

2) Anderson has too much integrity and class to do such a thing;

3) Dana White knows better than to allow corruption to ruin his golden goose.

On the street I grew up in Rio there were a lot of kids who fought like Anderson, they just don't have the opportunities to break out of the shanty towns as he has. I am not impressed.

Forrest went into that fight like he was going into a sparring match. Silva saw everything Forrest was going to do before Forrest even knew he was going to do it. He was way too predictable. Silva seemed disappointed to me that he didn't get a great fight out of him.

Why are people saying Silva is arrogant?!?!?!? Have you seen his interviews?!?!?! Is it for what he did in the fight???? That is retarded! it's like saying Jordan was arrogant for duking from the free throw line or that Babe Ruth was arrogant for pointing where he would hit the home run before he swung the bat. Everybody talking shit when he fought those 2 boring fights... "Oh he is not using his full potential." Make up your damn mind and thank God in heaven that you are alive to see one of the best fighters in history build his legacy!!! He will be the Ali of our time skill wise....

Re Silva's "taunting style"...an effective part of finishing a fight is breaking the will of the other fighter, drawing him to his own "quit point". I don't think Anderson tries to be insulting, but he absolutely knew he had Forrest in the palm of his hand and fought that way. Interestingly, Forrest has spoken about his will being unbreakable, yet he was intelligent enought to realize that he had to get the hell out of there when Anderson knocked him down for the third time. Forrest waved "no mas" b/c he was truly finished and he knew it.

Technically, Anderson and Machida are on a whole different level of reality from anyone else in MMA.
