Could Lyoto Machida dethrone Brock Lesnar?

Chris Thomas, the co-host of Fight Club on SiriusXM (and a Baltimore guy), was on Scott Ferrall’s Sirius show Monday night and raised an interesting point about Brock Lesnar.

He said, essentially, that light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida could move up to heavyweight right now and beat Brock Lesnar. Given that Machida has developed into quite an enigma himself, this fight sounds like it could be fascinating. Machida has expressed an interest in fighting Lesnar in the past but I think this would be a very tough fight for him.

Still, I like his chances better than 95 percent of the UFC’s heavyweight division. It could be awhile before we see Machida lose and the UFC has nothing to gain by making this fight while both are champs.

We’ve never seen Brock’s chin tested and Machida has excellent jiu-jitsu but Brock’s size and strength would be two difficult problems for Machida to solve. Machida has a unique style though and I'm not so sure Lesnar would be able to impose his gameplan at will.

Make no mistake, Lesnar has flaws. His strengths are capable of masking those against most of the UFC's heavyweights and Lesnar hasn't reached his peak yet. But an "elusive" and smart fighter, like Machida, could make things interesting for Lesnar. Certainly more interesting than with Heath Herring or Frank Mir.

Machida???? Seriously??? Not against Brock.
Why not just put Chuck Norris in the Octagon to beat Lesnar?? Whatever??

Machida is skilled but let's see him take on someone like Anderson Silva. How can you even compare the two??

What is this guy thinking??
Is he comparing Apples to Apples...or Apples to Watermelons??? C'mon!!!

As for Lesnar "The Boz" wannabe??? Send him back to Vince McMahon and end this Circus!

The real question on everyone's mind is this. When will Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva fight? This is the best current matchup that everyone wants to see. If Griffin can't beat Silva, Silva should be aloud a title shot depending on how this fight between Griffin and Silva goes down. No one can predict a winner and those are the best matchups. I beleive Machida is built to beat Silva. No one else at this time.

I thought Silva-Machida is a non-starter. Anderson has repeatedly said he will not fight his close friend.

But yes, I would love to see what happens if he did. Although I would like to see Silva-Rampage first.

lesner vs silva
machida vs lesner
rampage vs silva
rampage vs lesner
machida vs rampage
silva vs rampage

i am dreaming for at least one of these fights 2009 fall

Seriously? Machida would get the same treatment Mir received. Although, much more advanced than brock. brock would easily take him down and lay on him punching, just like he did to an advanced BJJ black belt in Mir.

Shane Carwin is who we should be looking at to dethrone lesnar. He is equal in size, NCAA division 2 national champ in '99 and undefeated with not 1 fight going past the half way point in the first round. 6 ko's and 5 sub's, he is good on his feet and on the ground.

Shane Carwin. Nough said

I think Machida would wreck Lesnar. Look at how Couture handled the first round against Lesnar, he was able to stuff a couple of take downs and get out from under Lesnar when he did het him down.

Machida is probably twice the athlete Coutour is, is extremely hard to catch, and has NEVER been taken down once in the UFC.

Standing up, Machida would knock him out and Lesnar wouldn't even be able to touch him.

We must remember Mir has ligament damage to his knee and couldn't use his superior jujitsu nor his knee to get Brock off him...Mir will be back and if healthy, can beat Brock again.

Rashad Evans vs. Lesnar would be the best matchup of a 205 guy. I think Rashad would win. He started out at heavyweight. He would be too fast and allusive for Brock. Plus, Brock wouldn't be able to take him down easily.

And, only 5 fights in, his chin is still questionable. Despite his clinic on Mir, Mir did land a knee that Brock admitted rocked him.

That seems like a better match-up than Machida.

But I agree with Eric, Shane Carwin should be the next guy to face Brock.

He is also the only guy in the UFC with a larger fist than Brock. Seriously, this guy wears 4x gloves. Shane has the wrestling and "man beast" qualities that could take Brock out.

What are you guy smoking? Lesnar would destory Machida and Evans. He would outweigh either of them by 75 pounds by the time of the fight. Brock would just get in close, take them down and beat the crap out of them. First round stoppages. I don't care if Rashad is a "great wrestler", its going to be impossible to outwrestle someone that much bigger that was an NCAA champion.

I and many others thought the same thing about Alvez v. GSP. Alvez weighed 190 coming into that fight---twenty pounds heavier than the day before's weigh in. I thought Alvez would follow the same plan---smother GSP and grind out a TKO. But he could never first and foremost could "get in close" on GSP.

Like Rogan always says big muscles got to breath and burn up gas. Alvez gased in response to GSP's pace pretty quickly even though he made it to RD 5. As much as Brock's power is a strength, it can quickly turn into a weakness.

Fedor, Machida, BJ, and Anderson are all good examples of this. Some of the most dominant fighters ever with quite unsuspecting builds.

Carwin is the next legitimate guy to take Brock. He can stop the take downs, and if anyone's seen his fights, nobody wants to "get in close" to his power. IE: Gonzaga KO(It'spretty sick when you knock a guy out with a short right).

Machida said he wont fight Spider silva.. they are long time buddies and trained out of Black House in brazil with big Nogs and now machida coaches at silvas gym in miami.... this fight would never take place the only serious contender for lyoto is rampage and maybe if they beat any world class guys then jon jones or ryan bader both unbeaten...

silva has no competition at MW revenge match up against okami would be a bloodbath the fans want to see and can see him being tested against palhares but some how still winning

still hoping for fedor vs brock to happen someday!

Machida would out strike lesner and his wide stance would make for a more diffucalt take down.

If machida stayed along the fence and stuffed his take downs he could win.

If lesner uses a simple protective G&P game, he would win.

I wouldn't be surprised to see lesner KO'ed in the first while advancing forward thinking his chin was invincible.

People putting to much faith in lesners "size" have clearly never been puched in the face, it hurts the same no matter how big you are and it has little to do with size of hands and more to do with power which is generated more by speed in this case.

I would count machida a slight underdog .

anyway silva machida would be better but i dont want to see them fight if they dont want to fight, silva will just lose on purpose, i have seen him fight, he isn't in what the fans want...`which is fine with me sense i think most of us are douchbags

most important machida needs to worry about shogun, who if he defeats needs t o be a serious contender for p4p best.

If on chance he fought and beat lesner/silva he would be elevated above fedor instantly.

I think the only serious opponent to Lesnar should be a Sumo wrestler, or someone at his own size. His skills are not that great, he is just a mountain of meat, and can simply lay down on top of you until you stop moving.

MMA has gone full circle maybe more than once, fortunately for the MMA industry it is still in a strong (solar) galactic orbit. However new comers to this relatively new sport may not realize that the current orbit the MMA is in with the other plants around the solar system is not what it once so honorably was.

I hope my analogy isn’t lost on anyone.

What was the purpose of the UFC originally?

Something that Bruce Lee actually believed and worked toward was martial art of any kind that would advance his abilities to win faster, more efficiently, and easier. He didn’t care if power lifting helped him or Greco roman wrestling. He’d work to “try” and apply any technique to any situation. If that technique would serve him in such a way that he could classify that technique under his hierarchy of properties:
· Efficiency - An attack that reaches its mark.
· Directness - Doing what comes naturally in a learned way.
· Simplicity - Thinking in an uncomplicated manner; without ornamentation.
· Quickness - Act fast, before the opponent can even think.
Many MMA styles such as “Am Ka Jutsu”, of the American Colleges of Karate, “Krav Maga”, found in Israel by Imi ______, Jeet Koon Do, Bruce Lee, attempt to take techniques from many fighting and self defense “martial arts”, to accomplish a system of defense that can save anyone from an attack and help that person escape. The original point wasn’t to “per sa” trade blows in a ring. That’s not self-defense, that’s sport.

The Gracie family’s purpose in the martial art world was to show that a small man could defend himself and given no rules or time constraints come out victorious in a fight against anyone.

This is where the orbit of the UFC planet has changed in the past decade or so.

The ju jitsu and grappling styles that had obviously proven to be affective against striking marital arts especially given not time constraints was proven. So often now with specific rules, time constraints, and fights being brought to their feet so “more striking action” can take place so the audience doesn’t lose interest as the fighters roll around from position to position on the ground. “it’s a business”. It would be nice if the fighters were told that if they don’t get a KO or a submission then they cannot win a fight on points. No decision. Eventually fighters with one to many draws will have to change their aggressiveness or quit. In the Ultimate Fighter series when Ryan Bader vs Elliot Marshal, and Marshal kept asking a team mate, “ I did everything I could do, right?”, NO

But the world has moved on and the martial arts world has adapted to this phenomenon.

In “real life” Royce Gracie would have killed every one of his opponents after breaking their arms or shoulders or elbows or wrists or leg or rendered them unconscious from a carotid choke, then he could have finished them off in the “real world” scenario. Ken Shamrock would not have fought another day and fighters would either have records of no defeats and so many Kills” while other fighters would have a lot of kills with one defeat only. Death.

If fights were to the death, they might go something like this, “Today, Lyoto Machida fought his 16th professional MMA fight against Quinton Jackson. Jackson succumb to an overhand right reverse punch that stunned him, allowing Machida to get into a rear naked choke position on Jackson’s. 2 minutes 36 seconds into the match Lyoto Machida broke Quinton Jackson’s neck to finish the fight and Jackson’s career. Jackson finished his life with 27 kills, and one loss to Lyoto Machida, death by broken neck”.
