Quinton "Rampage" Jackson arrested

The former UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, has been arrested on charges of felony evading, reckless driving and hit-and-run. Several reports mention Jackson running red lights during the pursuit, driving on sidewalks and sending pedestrians fleeing in terror. Photos from TMZ.com appear to show police arresting Jackson at gunpoint.

In an interesting twist to this story, Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Dana White flew to California to post Jackson’s bail. Seems excessive to me, but it’s good to see White taking a hands-on approach to prevent things from getting out of control. Officers did say Jackson wasn’t intoxicated at the time of arrest, so he’s either literally crazy or incredibly stupid.

The UFC dodged an incredible bullet here. If Jackson was injured or, God forbid, injured someone else, it would’ve been a public relations nightmare. Inexplicably, the entire sport of MMA would be on trial in the court of public opinion. Because the sport is in its infancy on the sports landscape, every incident like this is going to be magnified.

Jackson should be able to bounce back from this with little long-term damage. There are a number of athletes in mainstream sports who have done far worse things and are still competing. Of course, it’s unfortunate that this storyline has to shadow the biggest weekend of the year for the sport.

It’s also unfortunate that incidents like this will draw coverage away from athletes like Anderson Silva (whose Q&A is the post before this! Cheap plug!), but Rampage will bounce back from this. I would be shocked if he didn’t fight again before the end of the year unless there is far more to this story than it appears.

Just a temper tantrum following his loss.

Ladies&Gentlemen,

Another entry into The White Man's Burden 300 year diary in America
Sleep tight tonight.

There will still be criticism. But all Dana White needs to say is "At least he didn't go to prison for rape or bite someone's ear off, ran an illegal dog fighting ring, or murder his wife and kid before hanging himself.". It's pretty easy to point to other sportsmen and entertainers for far worse things that have happened, but yeah, Rampage is an idiot. Let's see if Dana does the right thing and dnies him an immediate title rematch as punishment. This story makes Jesse Taylor looks like Ghandi.

I doubt he will be fighting before the end of this year, since he will probably do some jail time. Unfortunate for a guy we all got to know and like through the course of the last Ultimate Fighter series.

Dana White will try to play this down as not a big deal. If he was driving on sidewalks and people fleeing then he should be severely punished

Let the man have his day in court before passing any judgements ,including personal opinions.

The white man keeps trying to hold him down!

For real though this is sad and unexpected, Rampage is one of my favorite fighters and a guy who really turned his life around after some early troubles. I hope he can leave the situation a better person and fight again.

Not a temper tantrum after his loss. Let's see...his moniker is "RAMPAGE"...kinda fits doesn't it?

Then again for all the people passing judgment. The police stated that he was "medically unfit" for arrest. Which could be an injury or a prescription drug problem - Ambien? Lose your championship, get prescribed a sleeping aid...yes the Ambien idea is a wild surmise, but so are the temper tantrum theories. If it wasn't alcohol and street drugs as the cops suggest and he was medically unfit, it might behoove us to wait for more information before slamming Mr. jackson.

Rampage is a great fighter, sounds like somethings up

Whatever idiot posted 'The white man keeps trying to hold him down' is in need of some 'help' him/herself. That is such a tired and wasted excuse. Come up with something a little more original. Besides, what does that even have to do with this situation?

Chalifool, that's some of the lamest analysis I've ever read: "the UFC dodged an incredible bullet here". You gotta be shititing me. One of the UFC's biggest stars has been charged with a felony after driving on sidewalks and nearly hitting pedestrians. The circus hasn't even begun yet until Rampage get's dragged through the televised court proceedings. This one's not going to go away as easily you seem to think. BTW, you seem awfully young and naive to be writing an online blog for the Baltimore Sun. Do you have a journalism degree, and if yes, from where?

Da Truth!-

Are you serious? Perhaps you have a considerable amount of pent up frustration in life after your parents put an exclamation point in your name but this is not nearly as big an issue as it could've been. If he hit someone or, God forbid, killed someone, this would be a huge crisis for the UFC.

Instead, it's a crisis only for Jackson. He needs to get his head together but you are incredibly off-base with your assumption of how big of a deal this will actually be.

Televised court cases? Televised by who? TMZ? The Court TV network?

There will be a far smaller circus on this than you think. First, there just aren't that many media outlets that cover the UFC enough to give this Michael Vick or O.J. court-status.

Second, this offense isn't near what you would need to draw a circus atmosphere. There are far worse felons playing every day in the NFL and NBA.

Jackson should fear Dana White's consequences more than the justice system's, at this point.

As for your personal criticisms, shoot me an email and I will break down my resume for you. It's extremely impressive. I usually carry several copies with me at all times (to impress the ladies) but I'm far too humble to post it here.

Da Truth is just jealous because his mom won't pay for his own blogging account. She also apparently doesn't pay for ESPN, as if he'd watched it he'd have seen countless other athletes guilty of worse things that get back in the game sooner rather than later.

Chalifoux knows his stuff, dawg, and has much respect from serious MMA journalists. He could care less what a basement dweller typing on mom's computer thinks...

Dana should be consistent, he kicked Jesse off the show for being a drunk idiot, will he suspend rampage for a bit too? Something tells me no, he wont.

Candidly, I'd enjoy reading Rampage's side of the story. Perhaps Dana will become the undisupted source of information while us interested parties wait? If I were Rampage I'd consult with a renowned pharmacist at length, concerning the potential side effects of his meds, focusing on any "new" meds in the mix. Bottom line, folks are talking about UFC, publicity molds ratings, sometimes it comes in a myriad of forms.

hang in there man??? you can get though this mess????

how the hell could you compare jesse tayor to Rampage? Answer YOU CAN"T!! There is NOTHING to COMPARE!! Rampage is an ESTABLISHED Fighter and was a champion and used to kick ass in pride!! Point is he is and has been a UFC and Pride (when he used to fight there) Draw People come and pay money to see him fight !! Who is Jesse Taylor?? Exactly!!!! Got his ass kicked by CB DOLLAWAY !! Just last week nobody unless you watched the Ultimate Fighter Show even knows him!! So MORON you try to compare an APPLE"" with an orange!! Jerkfoff!!!!
fight!!!

Typical. Remember Jesse "The Creep" Taylor?

Is Rampage being treated fairly in a league he is a relative new comer to.

Answer no!
He's got it way better just ask the kid who kicked the window out of that limo.

Jessie Taylor wasn't even an employee of UFC when he messed up. Dana just denied him employment. Rampage is an employee and Dana will handle it at his discression. He's not the first to make a mistake in the UFC. Sean Sherk-steroid use, Diego Sanchez-illeagal drugs. Rampage will recieve plenty of punishment for his actions, especially from himself.

I have known Rampage since I was 17.. went to college with him before all this UFC shit.. he knows how to take a loss.. so that wasnt it.. I hate when people assume shit.. leave that man alone.. He's human! Hang in there Page!
