Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Bowie wins

Orioles relief pitcher Chris Ray walked one batter, but he didn't allow any runs or hits in one inning during an injury rehabilitation assignment for the Baysox.

Bowie right-hander Jim Hoey entered in the ninth inning and recorded the final three outs to preserve the 6-0 victory over Connecticut at Prince George's Stadium.

Baysox center fielder Danny Figueroa was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored in the win. His brother, Paco Figueroa added a single and a stolen base.

I'm heading down to the clubhouse to talk to Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz, who improved to 7-0 since being promoted to Double-A.

Check out O's on Deck later tonight for full game recaps from all of the affiliates in the Orioles' minor league system.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Matusz out, Ray in

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz is finished after tossing seven scoreless innings. The 22-year-old left-hander allowed four hits, walked three batters and collected six strikeouts.

By my count, Matusz threw 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes.

Orioles relief pitcher Chris Ray is entering the game to start the bottom of the eighth for the Baysox as part of an injury rehabilitation assignment.

The Baysox lead, 6-0, at the end of seven innings.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Blowing it open

The Baysox scored four runs with five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Bowie took advantage of two errors by Connecticut in the inning.

Starting pitcher Brian Matusz retired the side in order for the Baysox in the top of the sixth. After throwing 27 pitches in the fourth, Matusz has thrown 20 pitches in the past two innings combined. Through six innings, the 22-year-old left-hander has tossed 58 of his 85 pitches for strikes.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Spoke too soon

It's fitting that I mentioned everything was going normally in my previous post. As soon as I said that, Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz uncharacteristically lost the strike zone to begin the top of the fourth inning.

The 22-year-old left-hander threw six consecutive balls, including a leadoff walk to Defenders first baseman Brett Pill before coming back to strike out right fielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve for the first out. Matusz loaded the bases with three walks in the inning, but he was able to escape without allowing a run.

The Baysox also loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with three walks. Bowie scored twice in the inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Baysox are still searching for their first hit.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- No surprise tonight

So far, the game is moving just as expected.

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the second inning, including Connecticut designated hitter Tyler LaTorre looking on a devastating curve ball to end the frame.

Seriously, I'm not exaggerating when I say that Matusz's curve ball is probably the best I've seen it so far this year. I know he typically throws it well, but it's really moving tonight.

The Baysox went quietly in the bottom of the second. Bowie right fielder Dave Krynzel and second baseman Paco Figueroa each popped out to first base, and catcher Adam Donachie struck out to end the inning.

It's back to the mound for Matusz. The curve ball is still looking pretty dangerous, and he has also throw a few impressive change-ups. Matusz retired the first two batters before Connecticut second baseman Brock Bond singled for the second time in the game.

Matusz struck out Defenders center fielder Mike McBryde to end the top of the third. He has struck out four batters and thrown 28 of his 38 pitches for strikes.

It's scoreless as we head to the fourth inning, and the Baysox are still looking for their first hit.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Where is everyone?

Well, the no-hitter is over.

I'm just kidding, but Connecticut second baseman Brock Bond singled through the hole at shortstop to lead off the top of the first inning.

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz settled down to retire the next three batters, stranding Bond at second base. The 22-year-old left-hander threw seven of his 11 pitches for strikes in the inning.

On a side note, I'm a little bit surprised at the small crowd gathered at Prince George's Stadium. With Matusz on the mound and the Mustache Mania promotion, I thought there would be a larger turnout. And to make things worse, the fans who did show up don't seem to be very involved in the game.

I've been here in the past when the ballpark was near capacity, so it's a little puzzling to not see many people here tonight. Of course, it's about 150 degrees (OK, it's really 85 degrees) and humid.

Left fielder Jonathan Tucker led off the bottom of the first inning for the Baysox, and he was hit by the first pitch from Defenders right-hander Geivy Garcia.

After Baysox center fielder Danny Figueroa walked to put runners on first and second base with no outs, Garcia escaped the jam. Bowie first baseman Eric Crozier flied out to left field, and Tucker was caught stealing at third base as designated hitter Ambiorix Concepcion struck out.

At the end of the first, it's still a scoreless tie.

Live: Baysox vs. Connecticut -- Matusz starts

Good evening from the press box at Prince George's Stadium.

It's very humid here, but the sky seems to be clear. That's always a good sign on a muggy day in July. However, I wouldn't rule out storms passing through later in the night.

Before I forget, it's Mustache Mania Monday tonight. There are plenty of fully grown mustaches, including some here in the press box.

I'm not participating in the promotion, in case anyone cares. I know, I'm a poor sport.

Double-A Bowie Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz looks to climb to 7-0 since joining the team in the middle of June when he faces the Connecticut Defenders tonight. The 22-year-old left-hander has allowed one earned run or less in 11 of his 17 starts this season, dating back to the beginning of the year with the Single-A Frederick Keys.

Here are some additional game notes, courtesy of the two teams:

• Baysox players Danny Figueroa and Paco Figueroa, who are brothers in case you didn't know, have combined to hit .388 (26-for-67) with runners in scoring position so far this season.

• The Baysox loaded the bases in each of the final three innings of yesterday's game against the Reading Phillies, but they weren't able to score in the 2-0 loss. Bowie is batting only .184 (11-for-67) with the bases loaded in 2009.

• Bowie right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion is hitting .287 at home, and six of his eight home runs have come at Prince George's Stadium.

• Over the weekend, Connecticut collected its first series sweep at home against the New Britain Rock Cats. The Defenders also swept the Rock Cats twice on the road in 2009.

Here are the lineups for tonight's game:

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Bowie earns shutout

It's official.

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz was removed from the game after pitching eight scoreless innings. The 22-year-old left-hander struck out 11 batters and allowed only one hit.

He threw 73 of his 98 pitches for strikes, but didn't get a chance for the complete game.

Relief pitcher Ryan Ouellette came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for the Baysox in a 6-0 victory over the Senators. Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored in a rehabilitation start for the Baysox.

I'm heading down to the clubhouse now to talk to Matusz and other players, so be sure to check out O's on Deck later tonight for full game recaps from all of the affiliates in the Orioles' minor league system.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Matusz keeps going

Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis exited the game after the sixth inning.

The veteran major leaguer was replaced by Baysox shortstop Robert Valido to start the top of the seventh. Izturis was 2-for-3 with two singles, two runs scored and a stolen base. He was also hit by a pitch in his final at-bat.

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz picked up two more strikeouts while retiring the side in order again in the top of the seventh.

Despite a two-out walk to designated hitter Guillermo Rodriguez, the Baysox went quietly in the bottom of the seventh.

After Senators right fielder Joel Guzman reached on a two-base error by Baysox first baseman Eric Crozier, Matusz struck out the next two batters.

Through eight innings, Matusz has allowed one hit. The 22-year-old left-hander has thrown 73 of his 98 pitches for strikes. He has 11 strikeouts, including two in each of the past three innings.

No one is warming up in Bowie's bullpen, so expect Matusz to come back out for the ninth.

INSTANT UPDATE: As soon as I published that entry, Baysox relief pitcher Ryan Ouellette started warming in the bullpen, so it looks like Matusz's night might be over.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Bowie increases lead

The Baysox added to their lead in the next two innings.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Bowie first baseman Eric Crozier hit a double into the left-center field gap. Third baseman Mike Costanzo collected an RBI single for the Baysox, making it 4-0 after five innings.

Different inning, same story for Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz.

The 22-year-old left-hander retired the side in order again in the top of the sixth. Matusz threw nine of his 11 pitches for strikes in the inning. So far tonight, he has only thrown more than three balls in one inning -- the fifth, when he threw six balls in 13 pitches.

After Baysox designated hitter Guillermo Rodriguez hit a single and stole second base, Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

Left fielder Jonathan Tucker followed with an RBI single for the Baysox, and Crozier added a ground-rule double to right field, making it 6-0 after six innings.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Matusz in control

Senators second baseman Michael Martinez was the first base runner allowed by Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz on an infield single to lead off the top of the fourth inning.

Martinez, however, was quickly erased when Harrisburg left fielder Michael Daniel hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Matusz struck out Senators shortstop Ian Desmond to end the top of the fourth.

Baysox third baseman Mike Costanzo led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Second baseman Miguel Abreu doubled down the left field line for Bowie, and Costanzo scored on a wild pitch.

Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead, and Bowie catcher Adam Donachie walked with one out.

After center fielder Danny Figueroa singled to put runners on first and second base for the Baysox, designated hitter Guillermo Rodriguez flied out to right field and shortstop Cesar Izturis hit a comebacker to the pitcher to end the bottom of the fourth.

Matusz mowed through the Harrisburg hitters again in the bottom of the fifth. Senators right fielder Joel Guzman flied out to right field, third baseman Ofilio Castro grounded out to shortstop and designated hitter Matt Whitney struck out looking.

Through five innings, Matusz has thrown 45 of his 58 pitches for strikes. The Baysox are holding onto a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Nine up, nine down

Through three innings, Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz has retired all nine Harrisburg hitters. The 22-year-old left-hander has three strikeouts, and he has thrown 28 of his 35 pitches for strikes.

Matusz just struck out Senators center fielder Edgardo Baez looking with two nasty curveballs to end the top of the third.

Baysox center fielder Danny Figueroa was robbed of a base hit by Senators second baseman Michael Martinez to lead off the bottom of the third. Martinez ranged far up the middle to make a diving play and spun to throw to first base to retire Figueroa.

After Bowie designated hitter Guillermo Rodriguez singled with one out and moved to second base on a wild pitch, Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis collected his second single of the game. Rodriguez, however, was thrown out at home plate by Baez for the second out.

Left fielder Jonathan Tucker knocked in Izturis with an RBI double to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead. Bowie first baseman Eric Crozier grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

After three full innings, the Baysox are on top, 1-0.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Matusz starts strong

Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. The 22-year-old left-hander threw nine of his 11 pitches for strikes.

Senators second baseman Michael Martinez flied out to center field to start the game, and Matusz struck out Harrisburg left fielder Michael Daniel for the second out. Senators shortstop Ian Desmond grounded out to third base to end the top of the first.

Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis hit a single to left-center field to kick off the bottom of the first for the Baysox. After Bowie left fielder Jonathan Tucker struck out, Izturis successfully stole second base.

The threat ended there, however, as Baysox first baseman Eric Crozier lined out to center field and third baseman Mike Costanzo flied out to left field to end the inning.

At the end of one inning, there is no score.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Notes and lineups

Good evening, everyone.

I'm sitting here in a packed press box at Prince George's Stadium with several members of the media to watch Double-A Bowie Baysox starting pitcher Brian Matusz against the Harrisburg Senators.

Orioles shortstop Cesar Izturis is making his first injury rehabilitation assignment for the Baysox, and Washington Nationals left-hander Matt Chico is starting for the Senators.

I'm told that Nationals first baseman Dmitri Young is also with the Senators, but he isn't in the starting lineup.

A short plug for the Baysox -- the team published its first podcast today. It contains pitching matchups and upcoming events at the ballpark.

Some game notes, courtesy of the two teams:

• After going 20-9 in June, the Senators have lost five of the first seven games in July.

• Baysox outfielder Danny Figueroa is batting .455 against Harrisburg so far this season, while shortstop Robert Valido and outfielder Jonathan Tucker both hold a .409 batting average against the Senators.

• Bowie relief pitcher Luis Lebron allowed back-to-back home runs to Altoona Curve first baseman Miles Durham and shortstop Brian Friday during yesterday's game. It was the first time since June 4, 2006 that the Baysox allowed back-to-back home runs.

Here are the starting lineups for tonight's game:

The IronBirds preserved a 2-0 victory over Staten Island in the home opener at Ripken Stadium in front of an announced crowd of 6,658.

Aberdeen relief pitcher Jose Barajas tossed two scoreless innings, and Mick Mattaliano closed out the win after walking the leadoff batter in the ninth.

IronBirds second baseman Garabez Rosa was the offensive hero with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and shortstop Blake Davis was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Steve Bumbry made a couple impressive plays in center field for Aberdeen. He had a stolen base, but was also caught stealing once.

I'm heading down to the clubhouse to talk to some of the IronBirds players, but don't forget to check out O's on Deck for full game recaps later tonight.

Live: IronBirds vs. Staten Island -- Rosa goes deep

IronBirds center fielder Steve Bumbry made a tremendous running catch in the top of the fifth inning to rob Staten Island second baseman Hector Rabago of a base hit.

Bumbry broke for the ball immediately and made the catch as he sprinted into the left-center field gap. He almost made another catch over the shoulder to deep center field, but the ball dropped in for a double by Yankees right fielder DeAngelo Mack.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Bumbry walked and promptly stole second base. After a walk to Aberdeen left fielder Lance West, catcher Brian Ward grounded into an inning-ending double play.

IronBirds starting pitcher Kenny Moreland allowed a leadoff single to Staten Island center fielder Francisco Santana. After Yankees shortstop Carmen Angelini popped out to second base, Ward threw out Santana attempting to steal. Then, Staten Island first baseman Rob Lyerly struck out to end the top of the sixth.

Shortstop Blake Davis singled to right field with two outs for the IronBirds in the bottom of the sixth, and second baseman Garabez Rosa launched a two-run home run onto the roof of the visitors' clubhouse in left field.

Through six innings, the IronBirds lead, 2-0.

The IronBirds collected their first base runners in the bottom of the third inning.

The brief offensive threat ended, however, when IronBirds third baseman Tyler Kelly lined to third base and Ward was doubled off second to end the inning.

IronBirds starting pitcher Kenny Moreland allowed back-to-back singles in the top of the fourth, but he escaped by getting Staten Island left fielder Neil Medchill to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Moreland threw all eight of his pitches for strikes in the fourth inning. Through the first four innings, he has thrown 31 of his 42 pitches for strikes.

Aberdeen shortstop Blake Davis struck out to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Second baseman Garabez Rosa flied out to center field, and first baseman T.J. Baxter grounded out to second base to end the inning.

Live: IronBirds vs. Staten Island -- Quiet start in Aberdeen

IronBirds starting pitcher Kenny Moreland looked impressive in the first inning. The 23-year-old right-hander retired the side in order, throwing eight of his 12 pitches for strikes.

The first two Staten Island hitters -- center fielder Francisco Santana and shortstop Carmen Angelini -- flied out to Aberdeen center fielder Steve Bumbry, and Yankees first baseman Rob Lyerly struck out to end the inning.

The IronBirds went quietly in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Tyler Kelly struck out swinging to lead off the game. Aberdeen shortstop Blake Davis grounded out to second base, and second baseman Garabez Rosa grounded out to first base for the final out.

Moreland retired the first two batters in the second inning before Staten Island third baseman Kelvin Castro singled to right field. Then, Moreland retired Yankees second baseman Hector Rabago on a groundout to third base.

Aberdeen first baseman T.J. Baxter hit a hard ground ball back at Yankees starting pitcher Francisco Rondon to begin the bottom of the second. Designated hitter Levi Carolus grounded out to third base for the Shorebirds, and Bumbry hit a slow roller in front of home plate to end the inning.

Live: IronBirds vs. Staten Island -- Notes and lineups

Good evening to everyone from the press box at Ripken Stadium.

It seems to be a nice night for baseball, but there are some dark clouds out in the distance. I'm not sure if rain is in the forecast, so we'll see if the game is delayed at any point tonight.

So far this season, the IronBirds have a 1-1 record. They split a series on the road with the Hudson Valley Renegades, and one of the matchups was postponed until next month.

InsideTheOs.com's Michael Jaffe spoke to Brandon Erbe and Blake Davis prior to the game about the recovery from their respective injuries. Both players are in Aberdeen on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

Here are some notes about tonight's game, courtesy of the two teams:

• The IronBirds are 3-3 in Opening Day games at Ripken Stadium, and their last win in a home opener was in 2007. Aberdeen defeated Hudson Valley, 12-1, on June 19, 2007.

• Aberdeen plays its first 12 games of the season against opponents from within the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League. The IronBirds were 12-21 against teams in the division.

• Staten Island dropped its first two games of the 2009 season to the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Yankees were defeated, 5-2, in six innings on Sunday afternoon.

• There are nine players from the 2009 MLB draft on Staten Island, and first baseman Rob Lyerly is the highest pick (sixth round). Other notable players on the Yankees are the organization's eighth-round selection, left-handed pitcher Samuel Elam, and the 13th-round choice, outfielder DeAngelo Mack.

Here are tonight's lineups:

STATEN ISLAND YANKEES (0-2)

Francisco Santana CF

After a two-run home run by Baysox shortstop Robert Valido in the bottom of the eighth inning, closer Josh Perrault came into the game to preserve the 2-0 win over Reading.

Phillies right fielder Gus Milner flied out to center field on the first pitch of the top of the ninth inning. Left fielder Michael Taylor and designated hitter Jeremy Slayden struck out for Reading to end the game.

Live: Baysox vs. Reading -- Valido goes deep

Reading failed to take advantage of a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning.

After Phillies designated hitter Jeremy Slayden reached first base, third baseman Neil Sellers grounded out and first baseman Brian Stavisky struck out. Shortstop Ozzie Chavez grounded out to third base to end the top of the seventh for the Phillies, and Slayden was stranded at second base.

Baysox first baseman Mike Costanzo flied out to right field to begin the bottom of the seventh. Second baseman Miguel Abreu lifted a high fly ball to left field for the Baysox, and it dropped between Reading left fielder Michael Taylor and Chavez for a double.

Bowie center fielder Dave Krynzel hit a deep fly ball to right field, which allowed Abreu to tag up and move to third base. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion walked to put runners on the corners for the Baysox, but left fielder Joe Nowicki grounded out to end the threat.

Baysox starting pitcher Tim Bascom gave up three hits in seven scoreless innings. With seven strikeouts and only two walks, he pitched very well in his first start in front of the home crowd at Prince George's Stadium.

Relief pitcher Ryan Ouellette entered the game for Bowie in the top of the eighth, and he retired the Phillies in order.

Bowie catcher Guillermo Rodriguez led off the bottom of the eighth, and he hit a single down the left-field line. Danny Figueroa entered the game as a pinch runner for Rodriguez, and he moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Jonathan Tucker.

Shortstop Robert Valido followed with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Baysox a 2-0 lead. Bowie designated hitter Brandon Snyder hit a deep fly ball to center field for the second out, and Costanzo smacked a ground-rule double. Abreu reached on an infield single, and with runners on the corners, Krynzel struck out looking to end the bottom of the eighth.

Live: Baysox vs. Reading -- Still no score

Baysox right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion made an impressive running catch to rob Reading first baseman Brian Stavisky of an extra-base hit to lead off the top of the fifth inning.

Phillies shortstop Ozzie Chavez followed with a single up the middle, and he stole second base with Brad Harman at the plate.

Harman grounded into a fielder's choice when Baysox starting pitcher Tim Bascom caught Chavez heading to third base and got him out after a brief rundown. Bowie catcher Guillermo Rodriguez threw out Harman attempting to steal to end the top of the fifth.

Bowie center fielder Dave Krynzel struck out to start the bottom of the fifth. Concepcion grounded out to shortstop, and left fielder Joe Nowicki lined out to second base for the final out.

Reading catcher Tuffy Gosewisch struck out, but reached on a passed ball by Rodriguez to begin the top of the sixth. Center fielder Quintin Berry moved Gosewisch over to second base with a sacrifice bunt for the Phillies, and right fielder Gus Milner popped up to shortstop for the second out. Left fielder Michael Taylor flied out to end the top of the sixth.

Rodriguez started the bottom of the sixth by grounding out to third base. Third baseman Jonathan Tucker flied out to center field for the Baysox, and shortstop Robert Valido lined a single to right-center field. Baysox third baseman Jonathan Tucker got hit to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and he moved to second base on a groundout by shortstop Robert Valido.

Tucker headed to third base on a fly ball to center field by designated hitter Brandon Snyder, but he was stranded when first baseman Mike Costanzo grounded out to end the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, Reading third baseman Neil Sellers was the leadoff hitter, and he popped out to the catcher. Phillies first baseman Brian Stavisky walked and shortstop Ozzie Chavez struck out looking.

Live: Baysox vs. Reading -- Notes and lineups

The Double-A Bowie Baysox host the Reading Phillies tonight in the finale of a three-game series at Prince George's Stadium, and I'll be providing periodic updates from the press box.

As hard as it was raining when I woke up this morning, it's amazing that it is a beautiful night here.

Honestly, it's actually pretty humid. I wouldn't be surprised if thunderstorms entered the picture later in the evening, but it looks like the game will at least be started on time.

Some game notes, courtesy of the two teams:

• In his past two games, Baysox catcher Adam Donachie is 5-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and seven RBIs. With that said, he's not in the starting lineup tonight.

• Bowie left-hander Chad Thall leads the Eastern League with 10 holds.

• The Phillies have been swept twice in 2009, and Bowie could make that three times with a win tonight.

• Reading pitchers have surrendered 67 home runs so far this season, which is the most in the Eastern League. However, the Phillies lead the league in fielding percentage (.984), and they have committed a league-low 38 errors.

Here are the starting lineups for tonight's game:

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Frederick beats Red Sox

Relief pitchers Jake Stevens and Brian Parker combined for three scoreless innings, and the Keys completed a 6-1 victory over the Salem Red Sox at Harry Grove Stadium.

Keys center fielder Matt Angle was 4-for-4 with a walk in the game, and designated hitter Robbie Widlansky and second baseman Bobby Stevens each added two hits.

I'm heading down to the clubhouse to talk to some of the players about the victory, but be sure to check out O's on Deck later tonight for the full game recaps from each of the affiliates in the Orioles' minor league system.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Britton exits game

Frederick loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth against Salem relief pitcher Josh Papelbon, but they were unable to add to their lead.

Yes, that's the brother of Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Keys starting pitcher Zach Britton is done for the day at Harry Grove Stadium.

The 21-year-old left-hander allowed one unearned run and two hits in six innings for Frederick. Britton struck out three batters and issued three walks. He threw 94 pitches in the game.

Relief pitcher Jake Stevens enters the game in the top of the seventh inning for the Keys.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Rowell keeps struggling

Keys right fielder Billy Rowell continues to struggle offensively.

The 20-year-old outfielder is batting .152 (5-for-33) with one home run and two RBIs in his past 10 games, including today. He has struck out twice and hit a slow roller in front of home plate during today's game against the Salem Red Sox.

Frederick third baseman Tyler Henson just let a ball go through his legs to begin the top of the sixth inning.

Salem second baseman Zach Borowiak reached on the defensive miscue, and he went to second base on a fly ball to center field by designated hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang.

I started typing too soon. Henson just committed another error when Red Sox catcher Ty Weeden's ground ball kicked off his glove and went into left field. Borowiak scored on the play to close Frederick's lead to 5-1.

Keys starting pitcher Zach Britton struck out two batters in the sixth inning. He's around 100 pitches for the day, so it's going to be interesting to see if he comes out for the seventh.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Britton escapes jam

Keys starting pitcher Zach Britton retired the side in order in the top of the fourth with two more groundouts and a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Keys added another run to increase the lead to 5-0.

Frederick loaded the bases with three straight singles by Robbie Widlansky, Bobby Stevens and Matt Angle.

It could have been much worse, but Keys shortstop Pedro Florimon Jr. struck out and first baseman Brandon Waring knocked in the run with a groundout. Catcher Caleb Joseph flied out to left field to end the inning.

Britton walked two batters in the top of the fifth, but he escaped without allowing a run in the inning. The 21-year-old left-hander forced Salem shortstop Kris Negron to hit into an inning-ending double play.

After five innings, Britton has thrown 42 of his 71 pitches for strikes. Only two batters haven't been retired by a groundout in the game -- Salem designated hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang flew out to end the third inning and catcher Ty Weeden struck out in the fourth.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Frederick scores more

Keys third baseman Tyler Henson grabbed his first hit of the month to start the second inning. The 21-year-old infielder stole second base, and then second baseman Bobby Stevens was hit by a pitch.

Center fielder Matt Angle singled to load the bases for Frederick. After shortstop Pedro Florimon Jr. struck out, Keys first baseman Brandon Waring hit a two-run single to put the team up, 4-0.

Frederick starting pitcher Zach Britton continues to dominate. The 21-year-old left-hander allowed a one-out double to Salem shortstop Kris Negron in the top of the third inning, but he stranded the runner.

Negron moved to third base on a groundout by Red Sox second baseman Zach Borowiak, and Britton got designated hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang to fly out to left field to end the inning.

Britton threw eight of his 12 pitches for strikes in the inning. Overall, Britton has 25 strikes out of 41 pitches.

The Keys were retired in order in the bottom of the third. Frederick left fielder Kraig Binick struck out, right fielder Billy Rowell was retired on a groundout to the catcher, and third baseman Tyler Henson grounded out to third base.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Frederick grabs lead

Keys starting pitcher Zach Britton cruised through the top of the first inning, throwing 10 of his 15 pitches for strikes.

The 21-year-old left-hander retired the first two batters on groundouts before walking Salem designated hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang. Then, Red Sox right fielder Jason Place grounded back to Britton to end the inning.

Frederick jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder Matt Angle singled and stole second base. He scored on a single by shortstop Pedro Florimon Jr., and catcher Caleb Joseph made it 2-0 with an RBI double.

Britton gave up a leadoff single to Salem catcher Ty Weeden in the second inning, but he got three more groundouts to strand the runner. Britton has thrown 29 total pitches and 17 strikes through the first two innings.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Lineups and other notes

Good afternoon from the press box at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.

The Keys are scheduled to play the Salem Red Sox at 2 p.m., and the weather is beautiful.

After some technical difficulties with an Internet connection, I'm ready to provide live updates. A special thanks to Keys director of public relations Adam Pohl for fixing my computer issues.

As I mentioned earlier, six Keys were selected as Carolina League All-Stars. The Red Sox will send one player to the game -- relief pitcher Derrick Loop.

Starting pitcher Zach Britton, who was named to the Carolina League All-Star team earlier today, will begin the game for the Keys.

Here are today's lineups:

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Bowie grabs victory

Starting pitcher Troy Patton tossed seven-plus innings to lead the Baysox to a 7-2 victory over the Harrisburg Senators.

Patton allowed a solo home run to Senators catcher Jhonatan Solano to lead off the top of the eighth. He then walked Harrisburg shortstop Michael Martinez before being removed with a 7-2 lead and no outs in the inning.

At my count, Patton threw 95 pitches (57 strikes) for Bowie.

Baysox relief pitcher Ryan Ouellette retired the first two batters before allowing a single to Harrisburg center fielder Elijah Dukes. Ouellette got Senators third baseman Joel Guzman to fly out to end the eighth.

Catcher Adam Donachie and right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion grounded out for the Baysox in the bottom of the inning before shortstop Robert Valido picked up his third single of the game. Bowie designated hitter Dave Krynzel struck out swinging to end the inning.

Ouellette retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Baysox.

I'll have more to share in the game recaps later tonight, but I'm heading to the clubhouse to talk to some of the players right now.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Patton cruising

Senators shortstop Michael Martinez smacked a double into left field to lead off the sixth inning. Martinez scored the first run for Harrisburg against Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton on a groundout by left fielder Michael Daniel.

Baysox right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion struck out to start the bottom of the sixth, and shortstop Robert Valido grounded out to second base. Designated hitter Dave Krynzel hit a double into right-center field with two outs for Bowie, and left fielder Jonathan Tucker knocked him in with an RBI single to give the Baysox a 7-1 lead.

First baseman Brandon Snyder struck out to end the sixth for the Baysox. He is now 0-for-3 with an intentional walk and three strikeouts in the game. Luckily for Bowie, it hasn't seemed to bother them to this point.

Baysox left fielder Jonathan Tucker made a diving catch to rob Senators first baseman Matt Whitney of a base hit to lead off the seventh. Patton struck out designated hitter Luke Montz on three pitches and retired Harrisburg second baseman Jemel Spearman on a groundout. The 23-year-old left-hander only threw six pitches in the inning, and he is at 85 pitches (54 strikes) through seven innings.

Third baseman Mike Costanzo, second baseman Miguel Abreu and pinch hitter Joe Nowicki all grounded out in order for the Baysox in the bottom of the seventh.

After seven innings, the Baysox are leading, 7-1.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Costanzo hits slam

In the fourth inning, Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton threw six of his 11 pitches for strikes. Senators center fielder Elijah Dukes popped out to first base, third baseman Joel Guzman lined to center field, and first baseman Matt Whitney hit a slow roller that Patton fielded and flipped to first base.

Baysox second baseman Miguel Abreu and center fielder Danny Figueroa led off the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles. Catcher Adam Donachie grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, and right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion struck out swinging to end the inning.

Senators designated hitter Luke Montz slapped a single past Abreu to lead off the top of the fifth against Patton. Montz was retired on a fielder's choice, and catcher Jhonatan Solano hit into a double play to end the inning.

Patton only threw eight pitches (six strikes) in the fifth. According to my count, which is unofficial, he has thrown 66 pitches (41 strikes) so far in the game.

Baysox shortstop Robert Valido hit a ground ball to second base to start the bottom of the fifth. Senators starting pitcher Justin Jones was late covering first base, and Valido reached on an infield single. Center fielder Dave Krynzel struck out looking for Bowie, and left fielder Jonathan Tucker singled to center field.

Both runners moved up when Harrisburg center fielder Elijah Dukes threw the ball past his cutoff man, and then Baysox first baseman Brandon Snyder was walked intentionally to load the bases. Third baseman Mike Costanzo followed with a grand slam to put the Baysox in front, 6-0.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Bowie scores again

Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton was a little wild to start the third inning. The 23-year-old left-hander walked Senators second baseman Ofilio Castro on five pitches, but he quickly retired the next two hitters on fly outs.

After allowing a single to Harrisburg right fielder Edgardo Baez, Patton got left fielder Michael Daniel to hit a ground ball to Baysox shortstop Robert Valido. He stepped on second base to end the inning.

Baysox right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion hit a triple to left field to start the bottom of the third. Daniel took a bad route to the ball, which skipped past him all the way to the wall. Valido followed with an RBI single to left field, putting Bowie up, 2-0, over the Senators.

Center fielder Dave Krynzel followed with a single to left field for the Baysox, and left fielder Jonathan Tucker flied out to right. With Baysox first baseman Brandon Snyder batting, Valido and Krynzel pulled off a double steal. Snyder struck out and third baseman Mike Costanzo grounded out to end the inning.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Abreu hits homer

There are some things that you can't make up.

In the top of the first inning, Senators left fielder Michael Daniel hit a foul ball that came back off the roof of the stadium and landed right in a woman's drink. Perfect shot, right into the cup.

Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton retired the side in order in the first. Harrisburg right fielder Edgardo Baez flied out to right field, before Patton struck out Daniel swinging. Center fielder Elijah Dukes hit a fly ball to deep center field to end the inning. Patton threw 14 pitches (nine strikes).

The Baysox also went down in order during the first inning. Designated hitter Dave Krynzel hit a deep fly ball to right field, but it was caught on the warning track. Bowie left fielder Jonathan Tucker grounded out to third base, and first baseman Brandon Snyder struck out looking.

Patton stayed strong in the top of the second. Harrisburg third baseman Joel Guzman popped out to Baysox second baseman Miguel Abreu, first baseman Matt Whitney struck out looking and designated hitter Luke Montz popped out to Baysox shortstop Robert Valido. Patton threw 16 pitches (13 strikes) in the inning.

The Baysox jumped into the lead in the second inning. After third baseman Mike Costanzo grounded out, second baseman Miguel Abreu hit a solo home run to left field, giving Bowie a 1-0 advantage.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Other random notes

It's a beautiful day -- not one cloud within sight here in the press box -- for baseball, but there seems to be plenty of open seats in the stadium. I'm pretty sure Matt Wieters playing in Baltimore might have something to do with that.

Here are some other notes, courtesy of the two teams, as we await the beginning of tonight's game:

Dave Krynzel is batting .296 in 22 games as the leadoff hitter for the Baysox this season.

• Baysox second baseman Miguel Abreu has at least two hits in four of his past six games.

• The Baysox are fifth in the Eastern League with a 3.62 team ERA this season. They are also fourth in the league with a .268 team batting average.

• Harrisburg is second in the league with 40 home runs, but the Senators rank last in the league with 157 runs scored in 44 games. They have scored two runs or less 18 times so far this season.

• The Senators have lost by two runs or less on 16 different occasions in 2009. Harrisburg has held the lead in 27 of their 44 games this season, but they have only 13 wins.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Golden Wieters found

Baysox communications manager Tom Sedlacek sent a news release last night informing everyone that the Golden Matt Wieters bobblehead was found, and it's a good time to pass that along to the O's on Deck readers since he is sitting next to me in the press box.

Crofton resident David Miller found the bobblehead between shelves at the Bowie branch of the Prince George's County Memorial Library System. Miller receives a prize pack focused around the new Orioles catcher, including a regular Wieters bobblehead, a T-shirt and an autographed baseball. He will also throw out the first pitch at an upcoming Baysox game at Prince George's Stadium.

The team expects to hold another scavenger hunt for Baysox fans in Anne Arundel County next month. For more information, check out the team's Web site.

Live: Baysox vs. Harrisburg -- Notes and lineups

Good evening from the press box at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie.

I'll be blogging live from tonight's game between the Double-A Bowie Baysox and Harrisburg Senators.

It will be a matchup of left-handers as Troy Patton is scheduled to make his ninth start of the season for the Baysox, while Justin Jones gets the ball for the Senators.

Patton is 5-1 with a 1.62 ERA, which is second in the Eastern League behind Akron Aeros starting pitcher Chuck Lofgren. Jones is 2-6 with a 5.05 ERA with Harrisburg.

As you'll notice in the lineup below, Washington Nationals outfielder Elijah Dukes is here on a rehabilitation assignment. In case you missed it, The Washington Post's Chico Harlan reported today that Dukes could face jail time if he doesn't pay $39,767 in outstanding legal fees.

Here are the starting lineups for tonight's game:

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Frederick falls again

Second baseman Matt Tucker hit a single for the Keys in the bottom of the ninth, but they suffered a 9-3 loss to the Salem Red Sox.

Frederick was swept in the series, and the team fell to 5-6 this season. Five of the six losses are against Salem, but the Keys won't face the Red Sox again until May 29.

Check O's on Deck later tonight for more information from Keys starting pitcher Brian Matusz, who was tagged with his first professional loss as a member of the Orioles' minor league system.

Keys manager Richie Hebner spoke highly of the 22-year-old left-hander following the game.

"[Matusz] is mature, and he knows what he's doing," Hebner said. "He's on a mission to get to the big leagues, and I think he will."

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Bullpen trouble in Frederick

In the eighth inning, the Keys allowed five runs, and Salem increased its lead to 9-3.

Frederick relief pitcher Cliff Flagello, who started the seventh, was charged with four runs after failing to record an out in the eighth. Ryan Ouellette gave up one run in the inning, but he also allowed both inherited runners to score.

For the second time in the game, Keys right fielder Bill Rowell broke in the wrong direction for a fly ball hit by Red Sox left fielder Jason Place. Rowell started back, but the ball dropped in front of him for a double.

It's the bottom of the ninth here at Harry Grove Stadium. I'll be posting a note when the game is over, but look for my game recaps later tonight on O's on Deck.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Matusz finishes strong

Keys starting pitcher Brian Matusz settled in by the end of his outing, but Frederick's defense looks shaky in today's game.

Matusz struck out three of the four hitters he faced in the fifth inning, but he also allowed a single to Salem left fielder Jason Place.

In the sixth, Matusz picked up the first two outs on two pitches, but the Keys' defenders let him down after that.

Keys right fielder Bill Rowell misplayed a fly ball by Red Sox shortstop Kristopher Negron that sailed over Rowell's head. He took a couple steps in before realizing the ball was hit deep, and Negron was credited with a triple on the play.

On the next play, Keys second baseman Matt Tucker committed a throwing error, which allowed Negron to score, giving Salem a 4-3 lead.

Matusz struck out Salem center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin to end the sixth.

The 22-year-old left-hander finished with a career-high eight strikeouts, which is two higher than his last start against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on April 14.

Matusz pitched six innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and seven hits. He could still take the loss if the Keys can't come from behind because Salem holds a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Joseph hits home run

Frederick catcher Caleb Joseph hit a solo home run to tie the game in the fourth inning.

Coming into today's game, Joseph was batting .267 (8-for-30). He hit .261 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs in 63 games for the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds last season. Joseph had 19 doubles and 34 runs scored.

Several people in the Orioles' organization are impressed with the 22-year-old catcher's skills. There is clearly a top catching prospect in the team's minor league system -- anyone remember his name? -- but Joseph looks like he might have a future in the major leagues.

At the end of four innings, the score is tied, 3-3, here at Harry Grove Stadium.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Matusz plugging along

Keys starting pitcher Brian Matusz pitched better to start the second inning, striking out the first two Salem hitters.

Matusz ran into some trouble, however, when Salem right fielder Matt Sheely hit a single and center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin walked. With two runners on base, Red Sox second baseman Aaron Reza grounded out to end the inning.

The Keys scored two runs in the bottom of the second, helped by Salem left fielder Jason Place's fielding error. Frederick's Chris Vinyard, Brandon Waring and David Cash all singled in the inning.

Matusz experienced some control issues in the third inning -- throwing two wild pitches. Both tosses were in the dirt, and Keys catcher Caleb Joseph couldn't block them. Still, he pitched out of trouble without allowing a run. Th 22-year-old left-hander struck out one hitter in the third.

Salem leads, 3-2, in the top of the fourth inning.

Live: Keys vs. Salem -- Rocky beginning for Matusz

Keys starting pitcher Brian Matusz got off to a rocky start in today's game against the Salem Red Sox.

Salem center fielder Che-Hsuan Lin reached on an error by Keys first baseman Chris Vinyard to start the first inning. Second baseman Aaron Reza followed with a single through the hole between third base and shortstop to put two runners on base.

Designated hitter Ryan Kalish followed with an RBI double to left field for Salem's first run of the game. The Red Sox added two more runs in the inning on an RBI groundout by left fielder Jason Place and a sacrifice fly by catcher Luis Exposito.

Matusz recovered to strike out Red Sox third baseman Zak Farkes to end the inning. He threw 25 pitches in the inning and 15 were strikes. Only one of Salem's three runs was earned.

Salem holds a 3-0 lead, and the Keys were retired in order in the first inning.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Bowie wins

The Baysox added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

Bowie third baseman Melvin Dorta bunted for a single and went to second on a throwing error by Akron Aeros catcher Carlos Santana. He moved to third base on Jeff Fiorentino's fly ball to center field and scored on a wild pitch by Aeros relief pitcher Neil Wagner.

Although the Aeros threatened with two baserunners, Baysox left-hander Wilfrido Perez pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the 2-0 victory in the home opener at Prince George's Stadium.

I'm heading down to the clubhouse to talk to some players, so I'll post the game recaps later tonight.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Patton's line

Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton tossed six scoreless innings.

Right-hander Josh Perrault entered the game to start the seventh for Bowie, which still holds a 1-0 lead.

Patton allowed three hits and struck out six batters. Overall, that is 11 consecutive scoreless innings for the 23-year-old left-hander to start the season.

It looks like he is fully recovered from last year's labrum surgery, which is great news for the Orioles. I'll have more information about Patton's performance after the game.

In other notes, Baysox shortstop Robert Valido made a beautiful defensive play in the seventh inning to rob Akron Aeros left fielder Nick Weglarz of a base hit.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Bowie takes 1-0 lead

Despite allowing a leadoff double, Baysox starter Troy Patton retired the side in the top of the fourth.

Aeros center fielder John Drennen misplayed Paco Figueroa's deep fly ball in the bottom of the fourth for Bowie's first hit of the game, which ended up as a triple. I'm not sure if he lost the ball in the lights, but Drennen was about 15 feet away from catching it.

Figueroa scored the first run of the game for the Baysox on Brandon Snyder's sacrifice fly.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Game moving quickly

Baysox starter Troy Patton continues to shut down the Akron hitters.

In the second inning, Aeros left fielder Nick Weglarz reached on an error by Bowie second baseman Miguel Abreu. The ball was hit hard to his left, and Abreu couldn't handle it.

Still, Patton retired the next two hitters on fly outs to end the inning. Baysox center fielder Dave Krynzel made a nice running catch on the second one, hit by Aeros designated hitter Damaso Espino.

Baysox catcher Guillermo Rodriguez flied out to deep center field in the bottom of the inning, but the team went down in order.

Akron second baseman Josh Rodriguez singled in the hole at shortstop for the first hit allowed against Patton with two outs in the third.

The Baysox picked up their first baserunner when third baseman Melvin Dorta walked to lead off the bottom of the third. Jeff Fiorentino lined out to the first baseman for a double play, however, and Robert Valido grounded out to end the inning.

It's still scoreless, but Patton just gave up a leadoff double in the top of the fourth.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Patton starts strong

The game started as scheduled at 7:05 p.m. It's refreshing to see a game begin on time, especially when the temperature is 56 degrees.

OK, the weather is actually really nice. For such a nice day, it's somewhat surprising that there isn't a larger crowd here at Prince George's Stadium. I'll have to see what the announced attendance is later.

Anyway, Baysox starting pitcher Troy Patton looked impressive in the top of the first inning. The 23-year-old left-hander retired the side in order, striking out the first two batters.

Almost as quickly, the Baysox went down in order in their half of the first inning.

Live updates: Baysox vs. Aeros -- Pre-game notes

I've arrived at Prince George's Stadium!

That's important news considering I was in a minor accident on Interstate 695 -- not my fault, by the way -- on the way here.

The Akron Aeros are in town for Bowie's home opener, which is slated to begin in about 30 minutes.

American Idol contestant Ju'Not Joyner, a Bowie resident, will be singing the national anthem, and Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is scheduled to throw out the first pitch.

Keep checking O's on Deck for updates during tonight's game.
