Today's game recaps -- August 22

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides fell apart in the ninth inning against the Rochester Red Wings, and the Single-A Frederick Keys came back to beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

The Double-A Bowie Baysox, Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds were all postponed due to rain.

Speaking of the Baysox, I was in the press box at Prince George's Stadium for several hours before the game was called due to the weather.

It seems like a tremendous waste of time, but it actually was very rewarding.

I was introduced to Joshua Kusnick, who is a sports agent. He represents approximately 40 professional baseball players.

Three Orioles minor leaguers are clients of Kusnick -- Baysox third baseman Josh Bell, Keys relief pitcher Brandon Cooney and Bluefield starting pitcher Vito Frabizio.

Here is Kusnick's blog, in case you're interested in following his updates. There are some baseball thoughts, but the blog also gives fans a personal glimpse into the life of a sports agent.

First, I'd like to apologize for the lack of game recaps over the past week.

There have been major technical issues with the Internet at my new house -- we can all thank Comcast for that -- and I haven't been in the office since I was on vacation for the entire week.

Now, let's get to the important stuff.

The Double-A Bowie Baysox fell to the Portland Sea Dogs, but the Single-A Frederick Keys pounded the Winston-Salem Dash.

The Rookie-level Bluefield Orioles topped the Elizabethton Twins, while the game between the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds and Auburn Doubledays was postponed due to rain.

The short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds blanked the Lowell Spinners, while the rookie-level GCL Orioles picked up an easy win over the GCL Twins.

With the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, Double-A Bowie Baysox and rookie-level Bluefield Orioles all idle, it was a clean sweep for the Orioles' affiliates tonight.

Earlier today, the Shorebirds activated infielder L.J. Hoes from the temporary inactive list. In order to make room for Hoes on Delmarva's roster, the team placed outfielder Brian Conley on the disabled list with a hand injury.

Many readers asked about Hoes, and the Shorebirds said he was placed on the inactive list to "attend to family matters." The 19-year-old infielder was 0-for-4 with an RBI in his return during tonight's game.

Also, the IronBirds added right-handed pitcher Jacob Cowan to their roster before tonight's game. Cowan was the Orioles' 10th-round selection in this year's MLB draft.

The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds split a doubleheader with the Lakewood BlueClaws, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox didn't play.

I wanted to clarify an earlier note about Frederick right-hander Kenny Moreland, who started tonight against Winston-Salem. In today's game previews, I mentioned that the Keys needed to clear room for Moreland on their active roster.

However, as Keys director of broadcasting and public relations Adam Pohl pointed out, Moreland was already on the team's roster. Thanks to Adam for setting me straight. All of these recent pitching moves in the organization tricked me, but I'll try not to let it happen again.

Also, the Baysox passed along a list of their recent transactions earlier. In case you haven't kept up with the moves over the past few days, they're listed below:

Friday, June 12

RHP Jake Arrieta transferred to Norfolk from Bowie.

Today's game recaps -- June 5

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides and Buffalo Bisons were unable to play due to the rain.

The Double-A Bowie Baysox failed to score for the third consecutive game in a 3-0 loss against the Erie SeaWolves.

The Single-A Frederick Keys dropped two games against the Salem Red Sox, while the doubleheader between the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and Lakewood BlueClaws was postponed.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

The game between the Triple-A Norfolk Tides and Buffalo Bisons didn't happen due to the inclement weather. Since it was the last matchup of the season between the two teams, it won't be rescheduled. The Tides will begin a four-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at Harbor Park.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Erie SeaWolves 3, Bowie Baysox 0 (Box score)

Recap: The scoreless drought continues for the Baysox, but there was some good news at Prince George's Stadium on Friday night.

Although Bowie's streak without a run reached 27 innings in a 3-0 loss to the SeaWolves, first baseman Brandon Snyder returned to the lineup after missing six games with a minor back injury.

"I hadn't seen a pitch in six days, and obviously that's tough," Snyder said. "The first at-bat, I actually saw the ball pretty good."

The 22-year-old first baseman was 1-for-4 with a double, and he is now batting .340 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs in 46 games this season for the Baysox.

"It just takes one or two guys to get hot, and everyone kind of feeds off of it," Snyder said when asked how the team could fix the recent offensive struggles.

Bowie starting pitcher Sean Gleason (3-4) allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in five innings. The 24-year-old right-hander walked four batters and collected one strikeout.

Second baseman Miguel Abreu led the Baysox with two hits, but the team struck out 10 times in the game. Bowie designated hitter Dave Krynzel had three strikeouts, and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez fanned twice.

"Fundamentally, the guys seem like they're trying too hard," Baysox bench coach Moe Hill said. "When you put pressure on yourself, it starts to mount up ... that's why they call them slumps."

Check O's on Deck on Saturday morning for some thoughts -- through an interpreter -- from new Baysox pitcher Ryohei Tanaka.

Today's game recaps -- June 4

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides and Double-A Bowie Baysox both failed to score a run in shutout losses to the Buffalo Bisons and Trenton Thunder, respectively.

The game between the Single-A Frederick Keys and Salem Red Sox was rained out, while the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Lakewood BlueClaws.

Delmarva and Lakewood were scheduled to play a second game, but it was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5:05 p.m.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Buffalo Bisons 1, Norfolk Tides 0 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Chris Waters allowed two hits in four scoreless innings for the Tides before a rain delay forced him from the game.

The Bisons topped Norfolk, 1-0, after scoring an unearned run against Tides relief pitcher Ross Wolf (2-2) in the sixth inning. Wolf gave up two hits in three innings.

Pinch hitter Justin Christian smacked a double with one out in the ninth, but the Tides were unable to score him for the tying run. Norfolk center fielder Joey Gathright grounded out, and third baseman Melvin Dorta struck out to end the game.

Norfolk relief pitcher Bob McCrory threw two scoreless innings.

It was the first time that the Tides failed to score in a game this season.

The Single-A Frederick Keys lost a rain-shortened game against the Lynchburg Hillcats, and the matchup between the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and Lakewood BlueClaws was postponed due to rain.

For the people who keep asking, I'm told that Baysox first baseman Brandon Snyder is dealing with a minor back injury. It's not believed to be serious, and there is no word when he will return to the starting lineup.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 5, Buffalo Bisons 3 (Box score)

Recap: With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, designated hitter Jolbert Cabrera hit a two-run double to lift the Tides over Buffalo, 5-3, at Harbor Park. The 36-year-old utility player had three RBIs in the game.

Norfolk second baseman Justin Turner was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and catcher Steve Torrealba added an RBI. Right fielder Jeff Fiorentino was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tides.

The Baysox placed outfielder Danny Figueroa on the disabled list, retroactive to May 31, prior to tonight's doubleheader against Trenton.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Buffalo Bisons 4, Norfolk Tides 2 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Chris Tillman (5-1) allowed four unearned runs and four hits in five innings, and the Tides suffered a 4-2 loss to Buffalo.

The 21-year-old right-hander struck out four batters in his return to the mound. Tillman didn't help his own cause defensively. He committed two errors, threw a wild pitch and balked once.

Norfolk center fielder Justin Christian was 2-for-4 with a run scored and his 13th stolen base of the season. First baseman Oscar Salazar and designated hitter Jolbert Cabrera added two hits each for the Tides.
