Widlansky grabs monthly honor in Carolina League

The Single-A Frederick Keys' Robbie Widlansky was selected as the Carolina League Player of the Month for August, the team announced in a news release.

In 29 games last month, the 24-year-old utility player batted .356 with 13 doubles and 22 RBIs. Widlansky was first in the league in batting average during the month, which is the second time that happened this year. He led the league after hitting .395 in 22 games in June.

Widlansky joined the Keys from extended spring training on May 19, and he has been named the league's Player of the Week on three different occasions in 2009.

The Orioles' 11th-round selection in the 2007 MLB draft is currently hitting .348 this season.

That number would earn him the league's batting crown, but Widlansky needs to get enough at-bats to qualify for the award.

Due to incorrect information in a news release from the Keys, the number of times Widlansky has been Player of the Week was misstated in a previous version of this post. The Baltimore Sun regrets the error.

I knew he had to get some kind of recognition. With or without All-Star honors, he is a formidable player who should play, at least, some time (along with Waring) at Norfolk next season. Dean, do you think he'll make it to the big leagues in the next two years? I know his power numbers aren't like Brandon's but is that something you could see him improving? Also, how many at-bats would he have needed and why did he come up from Spring Training so late? Thanks man.

This is great info. What positions does he play and which is his favorite?
