O's minor leaguers in '09 -- First basemen

Before jumping into the list of the top five first basemen in the Orioles' minor league system, let's follow up on the best catchers in the organization.

For the most part, there wasn't much to discuss about my list of top prospects at catcher in the organization.

Mostly everyone agreed that Single-A Frederick Keys catcher Caleb Joseph is at the top of the rankings, and the best other prospects at the position are a pair of 2009 draft picks -- Justin Dalles and Michael Ohlman.

The rest of the catchers listed in my rankings are good organizational players who probably won't contribute much to helping the Orioles in the major leagues.

A few people mentioned Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds catcher Luis Bernardo as someone who should be included in a list of the top players at the position in the organization.

Honestly, I considered adding Bernardo as one of the five catchers in the list. His offensive struggles in the South Atlantic League, however, lead me to believe it's going to be difficult for him to advance to the major leagues.

With that said, it's definitely possible for his defensive skills to put him on a path to the Orioles. Still, keep in mind that the 21-year-old catcher committed 11 errors and had 15 passed balls in 82 games with the Shorebirds this season.

Those numbers will need to improve if Bernardo is going to play in the majors in the future.

While there doesn't seem to be a lot of potential major leaguers at catcher in the Orioles' minor league system, there are several first basemen who could make an impact at Camden Yards.

This position, in my opinion, is arguably the most difficult to rank in the organization because there are more than five candidates who could play in the major leagues at some point in their career.

I've compiled a list of the best first basemen, in my opinion, but I'm pretty sure that there will be several other ways for readers to rank the players. Make sure you leave your rankings as a comment below this entry and we can all discuss them.

Here is how I would rank the top five first basemen in the Orioles' minor league system, as well as a few other players who could be in the discussion.

1. Brandon Waring
2. Brandon Snyder
3. Rhyne Hughes
4. Robbie Widlansky
5. Joe Mahoney

At least the first three players could make an argument for the top spot in my rankings, but I decided to go with Brandon Waring due to his impressive season in his first year as a member of the Orioles' minor league system.

After being acquired in the offseason from the Cincinnati Reds in the Ramon Hernandez trade, Waring thrived with his new organization.

The 23-year-old first baseman was selected as the Carolina League Most Valuable Player after hitting .273 with 26 home runs and 90 RBIs in 128 games with the Keys this season.

Waring led the league in RBIs, total bases (246) and slugging percentage (.520), and he finished second in the league in home runs and doubles (35). The Reds' seventh-round selection in the 2007 MLB draft also finished third on the Keys with 74 runs scored.

In eight games with the Double-A Bowie Baysox at the end of the season, Waring batted .292 (7-for-24) with three doubles, one home run and six RBIs. He hit the home run and collected five RBIs in his first game at the Double-A level on Sept. 1 against the Binghamton Mets.

Waring also dropped from 156 strikeouts in 119 games last season to 130 in 136 games in 2009. It's not a tremendous decrease, but the progress is definitely a positive step.

At No. 2, I decided to pick Brandon Snyder over Rhyne Hughes even though Hughes has displayed greater power numbers at this point in his career.

Snyder would have easily been ranked at the top of the list, in my opinion, until he struggled after being promoted from the Baysox to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides in June.

The 22-year-old infielder batted .343 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in 58 games for Bowie, but he only hit .248 with two home runs and 43 RBIs in 73 games as a member of the Tides.

Depending on what the Orioles do in free agency during the offseason, Snyder is likely going to get an opportunity to make the Opening Day roster next year. However, it would probably be better for the Orioles' 2005 first-round draft pick to start the season in Norfolk and earn his way into the major leagues.

Hughes seems to be a hidden gem who could surprise a lot of people in 2010. He batted .279 with 25 home runs and 79 RBIs in 134 games while splitting the season between the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits, Triple-A Durham Bulls and Norfolk.

The 26-year-old first baseman, who the Orioles acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays as the player to be named later in the trade for Gregg Zaun, hit .264 with three home runs and seven RBIs in 20 games for the Tides.

Hughes also hit 35 doubles this season, including two after joining the organization in August.

Frederick's Robbie Widlansky is listed as the fourth-best first baseman in the organization, according to my list. Widlansky qualifies as a first baseman in my rankings because he played more games there than any other position in 2009.

Widlansky captured the batting title in the Carolina League after hitting .340 with seven home runs and 59 RBIs in 86 games for the Keys. The 24-year-old utility player led the team in on-base percentage (.395), finished tied for third in doubles (31) and second in slugging percentage (.506).

Although he is a little bit old for the level, the Orioles' 11th-round selection in the 2007 MLB draft turned some heads with his performance this year. It will be interesting to see how he plays in 2010.

Shorebirds first baseman Joe Mahoney earns the final spot in my list because of his breakthrough performance in his second year with the team.

After hitting .222 with seven home runs and 61 RBIs in 95 games with the Shorebirds last season, Mahoney changed his approach to the game in 2009.

The Orioles' sixth-round choice in the 2007 MLB draft was 29-for-30 in stolen bases with the Shorebirds after he focused on using his speed as an advantage. Mahoney also batted .281 with seven home runs and 54 RBIs in 108 games with Delmarva.

Mahoney was 8-for-30 (.267) with a home run, five RBIs and four doubles in seven games after being promoted to Frederick at the end of the season.

Some other players who narrowly missed the cut on my list were Norfolk's Michael Aubrey, Bluefield's Mike Flacco and David Anderson of the GCL Orioles.

O's minor leaguers in '09 -- Catchers

After taking a longer break away from O’s on Deck than planned, I’m back and ready to go.

Over the next couple weeks, I’m going to take a look at the minor leaguers in the Orioles’ system. I’ll analyze each position and share my thoughts on the top players.

Last year, if you remember, I ranked the top players for each position in the organization during the 2008 season. You can find all of those breakdowns here.

I’m making a small change to my criteria for ranking the players this year. While I made it a point to not pay too much attention to prospect status in 2008, I’ve decided that it’s going to be a significant part of the new series of lists.

Let’s face it – a player’s potential to help the Orioles in the major leagues is a big reason why most of the readers continue to support O’s on Deck, so I think it’s good to include prospect status in the rankings.

With that said, as you'll see below, prospect status wasn't too much of a factor in the first list. It's hard to get a list of five prospects if there aren't that many available at a given position.

While some readers might agree with my picks, the majority of you will likely have a different opinion about a lot of the positions.

Since this is a blog and audience participation is highly encouraged, I’d like for everyone to post a list of prospects for each position as a comment at the bottom of each entry. As long as your comments are clean, I’m happy to approve them to facilitate discussion.

I’ll start the rankings today by naming the top five catchers in the Orioles’ minor league system.

Obviously, it’s not as easy to pick the top catchers this year since Matt Wieters successfully headed to the major leagues in May and never looked back.

Based on this season’s numbers, as well as the potential that they’ll contribute in the major leagues in the future, I’d put the catchers in the following order:

1. Caleb Joseph
2. Justin Dalles
3. Dashenko Ricardo
4. Guillermo Rodriguez
5. Adam Donachie

Despite hitting only .132 after Aug. 1, including an 0-for-14 slump to end the year, the easy choice for the top catcher in the Orioles’ minor league system is Single-A Frederick Keys catcher Caleb Joseph.

The 23-year-old catcher batted .284 with 12 home runs and 60 RBIs in 104 games for the Keys. Joseph was second on the Keys in home runs, fourth in RBIs, fifth in doubles (23) and sixth in runs scored (50).

Joseph was selected to play in the 2009 California/Carolina League All-Star Game in June, and he was also named to the postseason All-Star team in the Carolina League.

The Orioles’ seventh-round selection in the 2008 MLB draft from Lipscomb University threw out 41 of 151 base runners (27%), according to BaseballReference.com, and he also had 11 passed balls.

Although he only batted .225 in 48 games for the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds, Justin Dalles gets the nod as the second-best catcher in the Orioles’ minor league system in 2009.

Dalles, who the Orioles picked in the sixth round of this year’s MLB draft, didn’t hit any home runs this season for Aberdeen. The 20-year-old catcher, however, was third on the team with 21 RBIs and fourth with nine doubles.

At two different levels this season, Dashenko Ricardo showed enough promise to earn the third spot in my list of top catchers in the Orioles’ minor league system.

Honestly, that speaks more to the lack of depth at the position than his actual performance. Since he is only 19 years old, however, there is still plenty of time for him to improve.

This year, Ricardo batted .234 with nine doubles, 19 RBIs and 15 runs scored in 55 games split between the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and Rookie-level Bluefield Orioles. He played in six games with the Shorebirds before finishing the season at Bluefield.

At No. 4, I went with Guillermo Rodriguez because he turned a decent season in the minor leagues into a promotion to the Orioles in September. The 31-year-old catcher hit .244 with five home runs and 30 RBIs in 89 games between the Double-A Bowie Baysox and Triple-A Norfolk Tides this year.

Rodriguez also caught 39% of base runners stealing this season – 29 out of 75 – between the two levels, according to BaseballReference.com. He also collected 20 doubles, which ranked second among catchers in the organization behind Joseph.

In the final spot of the catcher rankings, I went with Bowie’s Adam Donachie. The 25-year-old catcher batted .215 with five home runs and 33 RBIs in 88 games for the Baysox. Donachie also had 19 doubles and 25 runs scored this season.

How would you rank the catchers in the Orioles' minor league system?

Note that I didn't include Michael Ohlman, the Orioles' 11th-round selection in this year's MLB draft, because he only played in four games this season.

That's not a big enough sample size to get a good idea of his ability, but he did cut down four out of five base runners attempting to steal.

Matusz, Waring honored as top O's minor leaguers

In case you missed it, The Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly reports that Orioles starting pitcher Brian Matusz and Double-A Bowie Baysox corner infielder Brandon Waring were picked as the organization's top players for this season.

Matusz, a 22-year-old left-hander, started the season with the Single-A Frederick Keys before being promoted to Bowie and eventually heading to the major leagues. The Orioles' 2008 first-round draft pick was 11-2 with a 1.91 ERA in 19 starts between the two levels in the organization.

Waring, who plays both first and third base, hit .273 with 26 home runs and 90 RBIs in 128 games for the Keys. The 23-year-old infielder finished second in the Carolina League with 35 doubles, and he was named the league's Player of the Year.

Waring also had one home run and six RBIs in eight games with the Baysox at the end of the season. He was 7-for-24 with three doubles and four runs scored at the Double-A level.

I think both of these award winners were obvious picks, but what do you guys think? Are there any arguments for other players to win either award?

Today's game recaps -- September 7

None of the affiliates in the Orioles' minor league system qualified for the postseason, so this is the final edition of the game recaps for the 2009 season.

I'm going to take about a week off from blogging, but then I'll return to analyze the performance of the players in the organization, as well as updating the different winter leagues.

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides concluded the season by edging the Durham Bulls, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox fell to the Harrisburg Senators.

The Single-A Frederick Keys were blanked by the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds were beaten by the Lakewood BlueClaws.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 4, Durham Bulls 3, 10 innings (Box score)

Recap: Center fielder Dave Krynzel was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBIs as the Tides beat Durham, 4-3, in 10 innings.

Norfolk third baseman Brandon Snyder contributed a double and an RBI, and left fielder Jonathan Tucker was 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Tides starting pitcher Chris George allowed five hits in six scoreless innings.

Relief pitcher Jim Miller (4-4) retired all five batters he faced for the Tides, and right-hander Josh Perrault earned his second save since being promoted despite giving up one run and two hits in one inning.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Harrisburg Senators 4, Bowie Baysox 2, 7 innings (Box score)

Bowie center fielder Matt Angle was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and left fielder Tyler Henson added a single and two outfield assists.

Baysox starting pitcher Ryohei Tanaka (4-4) gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out four batters and didn't walk anyone.

First baseman Brandon Waring was 1-for-3 for the Baysox.

Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Wilmington Blue Rocks 3, Frederick Keys 0 (Box score)

Recap: Center fielder Kyle Hudson was 2-for-4 with a stolen base in the Keys' 3-0 loss to Wilmington.

Frederick designated hitter Billy Rowell hit a double, and catcher Wally Crancer was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Rowell batted .194 (6-for-31) with 13 strikeouts in his final 10 games of the season, and the 20-year-old outfielder finished the year with a .225 batting average, nine home runs and 39 RBIs in 120 games.

Keys starting pitcher Sean Gleason (4-9) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out five batters and issued one walk.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Score: Lakewood BlueClaws 7, Delmarva Shorebirds 2 (Box score)

Today's game previews -- September 7

It is the final day of the season for the Orioles' four full-season affiliates.

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides look to finish at .500 with a game against the Durham Bulls, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox face the Harrisburg Senators at Prince George's Stadium.

The Single-A Frederick Keys take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds host the Lakewood BlueClaws at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Also, according to the Keys, utility player Robbie Widlansky is going to be 10-15 plate appearances short of the 378 required to qualify for the batting title in the Carolina League.

Since his .345 batting average is so much higher (49 points) than second-place Clint Robinson of Wilmington heading into the final day, however, Widlansky will win the batting title.

When a player is short of the required plate appearances, his batting average is prorated over the rest of the season. Widlansky will still hold the lead in this scenario, according to the team.

The 24-year-old utility player will become the fourth player in Keys history to win the award. Frederick infielder Rick Short was the last player from the team to have the highest batting average in the league when he hit .319 in 1997.

Aberdeen right fielder Jason Rook added a solo shot, and center fielder Steve Bumbry was 2-for-3 with a double.

IronBirds starting pitcher Tyler Sexton (3-7) gave up five hits in six scoreless innings, and relief pitcher Josh Dowdy recorded the final three outs for his seventh save since being promoted to the team in July.

Widlansky grabs monthly honor in Carolina League

The Single-A Frederick Keys' Robbie Widlansky was selected as the Carolina League Player of the Month for August, the team announced in a news release.

In 29 games last month, the 24-year-old utility player batted .356 with 13 doubles and 22 RBIs. Widlansky was first in the league in batting average during the month, which is the second time that happened this year. He led the league after hitting .395 in 22 games in June.

Widlansky joined the Keys from extended spring training on May 19, and he has been named the league's Player of the Week on three different occasions in 2009.

The Orioles' 11th-round selection in the 2007 MLB draft is currently hitting .348 this season.

That number would earn him the league's batting crown, but Widlansky needs to get enough at-bats to qualify for the award.

Due to incorrect information in a news release from the Keys, the number of times Widlansky has been Player of the Week was misstated in a previous version of this post. The Baltimore Sun regrets the error.

Keys' Waring, Britton earn Carolina League awards

The Single-A Frederick Keys aren't heading to the postseason, but two of the team's players are taking home individual awards for the 2009 season.

Infielder Brandon Waring, who was recently promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox, was selected as the Most Valuable Player in the league. Keys left-handed pitcher Zach Britton earned the league's Pitcher of the Year honors.

Waring is the first player in team history to be named MVP of the Carolina League, and Britton is the third player from the franchise to earn the pitching award.

"It's definitely an honor," Waring said in a statement from the Keys. "It was fun to be in Frederick for that duration of time to put up good numbers and I'm excited for it."

The two players were also named to the postseason Carolina League All-Star team, and they were joined by catcher Caleb Joseph and center fielder Matt Angle.

Waring made the team as the top first baseman, while Joseph was honored as the top catcher in the league. Angle was one of four outfielders selected for the team, and Britton was tabbed as the top starting pitcher.

Waring is currently in second place in the league with 26 home runs, which is the second-most home runs in franchise history. The 23-year-old infielder collected 90 RBIs for the Keys, and he hit a club-record 63 extra-base hits in 2009.

Britton joins Orioles relief pitcher Jim Johnson (2005) and Triple-A Norfolk Tides starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (2008) as Keys to earn the award for the league's top pitcher.

Britton was 9-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 25 starts for Frederick in 2009, and the 21-year-old left-hander is second in the league with 131 strikeouts in 140 innings. He also ranks third in the league in ERA and fourth in innings pitched.

Mike Flacco promoted to Delmarva

The Rookie-level Bluefield Orioles concluded their season Tuesday, so three players were promoted to the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds for the final stretch in 2009.

Infielder Mike Flacco is the most recognizable name to Orioles fans in the group because he is the younger brother of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.

Flacco will be joined at Delmarva by shortstop Gary Helmick, a Towson University alum, and left-handed pitcher Michael Mechaw.

Outfielder Kyle Hudson, shortstop Greg Miclat and right-handed pitcher Shane Mathews are heading from Delmarva to the Single-A Frederick Keys.

Outfielder Brian Conley, who also played baseball at Towson, is returning to Delmarva from the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds.

Flacco led Bluefield with 34 RBIs, and he batted .272 with three home runs in 60 games. The 22-year-old infielder also led the team with 14 doubles and five triples.

Helmick was third on Bluefield with a .275 batting average, and he contributed four home runs and 13 RBIs. The 22-year-old infielder also added 10 doubles, four triples and 31 runs scored.

Mechaw, the Orioles' 26th-round selection in this year's MLB draft, was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 12 games for Bluefield. The 21-year-old left-hander struck out 16 batters and issued 12 walks in 25 1/3 innings.

Hudson batted .284 with 61 runs scored and 31 stolen bases in 117 games with the Shorebirds, and Miclat hit .228 with 49 runs scored and 25 stolen bases in 111 games.

Mathews was 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 27 appearances, including one start, for Delmarva after joining the team in May. Opponents batted .284 against him.

Conley is playing for Delmarva for the second time this season after hitting .163 with one home run and six RBIs in 24 games for the team in June and July.

The 23-year-old outfielder batted .263 with one home run and eight RBIs in 31 games for the IronBirds. Conley was also 1-for-7 in four games with the Double-A Bowie Baysox in 2009.

The regular season for the rest of the affiliates in the Orioles' minor league system ends Monday, so these players will be with their respective teams for less than a week.

Waring among players promoted to the Baysox

Four players are headed from the Single-A Frederick Keys to the Double-A Bowie Baysox, including infielder Brandon Waring, who currently ranks among the Carolina League leaders in several offensive categories.

Joining Waring on the move to Bowie for the final week of the season are center fielder Matt Angle, shortstop Pedro Florimon Jr., and right-handed pitcher Brian Parker.

Right-hander Zach Clark heads from the Keys to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

Waring currently leads the Carolina League in RBIs (90), total bases (246) and doubles (35), and the 23-year-old infielder is second in the league with 26 home runs.

Angle leads the league with 138 hits, and he ranks fifth in the league with a .289 batting average. The 23-year-old outfielder is fourth in the league with 40 stolen bases.

Florimon is batting .267 with nine home runs and 68 RBIs this season. He is third in the league with 32 doubles. The 22-year-old infielder is second on the team with 76 runs scored.

Also, left-handed pitcher Stephen Procner was promoted from the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds to the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds.

In addition to these promotions, there were several other moves in the organization today.

I'm checking with the different affiliates to see if there have been any other moves, and I'll pass along any information that I receive.

UPDATED (3:13 p.m.): The Baysox informed me that utility player Miguel Abreu, outfielder Danny Figueroa and infielder Paco Figueroa were all placed on the temporary inactive list. Also, outfielders Dave Krynzel and Ambiorix Concepcion were promoted to the Tides.

Due to inaccurate information provided in a news release, Zach Clark's destination was misstated in a previous version of this post. The Baltimore Sun regrets the error.

Today's game previews -- September 1

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides take on the Charlotte Knights in a doubleheader at Harbor Park, and the Double-A Bowie Baysox return home to Prince George's Stadium to face the Binghamton Mets.

The Single-A Frederick Keys welcome the Kinston Indians to Harry Grove Stadium, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds meet the Lake County Captains at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds play the Tri-City ValleyCats, and the Rookie-level Bluefield Orioles host the Burlington Royals at Bowen Field.

Outfielder Lou Montanez, who played in two games with the Rookie-level GCL Orioles earlier this week, will continue his injury rehabilitation assignment with the Keys over the next three days.

Montanez, the third overall selection in the 2000 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs, batted .204 with one home run and six RBIs in 18 games with the Orioles this season before injuring his thumb. The 27-year-old outfielder underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament.

Montanez was 2-for-6 with an RBI during his two-game stint with the GCL Orioles.

Shorebirds starting pitcher Nathan Moreau was placed on the temporary inactive list. The 22-year-old left-hander is heading to Georgia to begin the fall semester for college, according to the team, and he won't return in 2009.

In order to replace Moreau, left-hander Nicholas Haughian was promoted from the IronBirds to Aberdeen.

Also, Delmarva first baseman Joe Mahoney and left-hander Brett Bordes head to the Keys from Delmarva.

No word on other moves at this time, but I'll keep you updated as I hear them.
