Tides' Snyder honored by International League
Triple-A Norfolk Tides first baseman Brandon Snyder was named the International League's Batter of the Week for Aug. 3-9, the league announced in a news release.
The 22-year-old infielder batted .500 (12-for-24) with four RBIs and five runs scored in six games during the week. Snyder struggled initially after being promoted to the Tides in June, but he is hitting .421 with nine RBIs in his past 10 games.
Snyder is now hitting .280 with two home runs, eight doubles and 33 RBIs in 48 games at the Triple-A level. The Orioles' 2005 first-round selection batted .343 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs in 58 games with the Double-A Bowie Baysox before his promotion.
Snyder is the second Tides player to earn the weekly award. Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold was honored from April 13-19 when he was still in Norfolk.
UPDATE: Two other players in the Orioles' minor league system received a weekly award from their respective leagues.
Baysox starting pitcher Brandon Erbe was named Pitcher of the Week by the Eastern League after tossing eight no-hit innings against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Aug. 6. The 21-year-old right-hander struck out five batters and issued three walks, but he wasn't given an opportunity to return for the ninth to attempt to finish the no-hitter.
The Carolina League named Single-A Frederick Keys first baseman Robbie Widlansky as the Batter of the Week. The 24-year-old utility player batted .586 (17-for-29) with two home runs and nine RBIs from Aug. 3-9, and he had six games with at least two hits during the week.

lets hope he keeps it up so we dont have to see Huff lumbering around the bases anymore! How is Snyder's defense at first? we dont hear about that.

Dean,
I have been watching Brandon Snyder's progress through the minor leagues,
since he was our Number One Draft Pick.
I do hope that Brandon keeps improving. He does appear to be a compulsive type player.
He is just another young piece of the puzzle that in a few years will make us competitive in the American League East.
Thank you for listening......

Another part of the puzzle, the question is when next year. Would the O's gamble and make him the opening day IB?
Keep up the good work, I read your column everyday.
Thanks

Give Snyder a shot as the Opening Day first baseman, re-sign Huff or Wiggington and stick him at 3rd.
That would be what I would do.

Delmarva has 5 or 6 players who can steal some bases, led by the 26 and 1 guy from Mars.

Hi Dean,
That's really good news. I got to see Snyder play twice this year and he uses the whole field, hit's it where it is pitched, has good power to right center.
I wrote you a couple weeks ago about Billy Rowell at Frederick. What's the thinking in the organization? Although he won't be 21 until the fall he does not appear to be progressing as planned, and has been moved from 3B to RF.

I think putting Huff and Mora on waivers signals the possibility of promoting Brandon Snyder to the big leagues if one of them is dealt. Even if they are not traded, I would not be surprised to see a call up in September. He has already shown that he can dominate the Arizona Fall League as he did last year. I think Brandon Snyder should get a glimpse of what major league pitching is all about. Then I would start him at AAA next season. When he tears it up, like Reimold did, bring him up for good.
