Today's game recaps -- June 20

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides lost to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a win over the New Britain Rock Cats.

The Single-A Frederick Keys survived against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds split a doubleheader with the Hagerstown Suns.

The game between the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds and the Hudson Valley Renegades was postponed due to rain.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Lehigh Valley IronPigs 5, Norfolk Tides 3 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher David Pauley (5-5) allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits in seven innings, and the Tides fell to Lehigh Valley, 5-3.

Norfolk center fielder Justin Christian was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. The 29-year-old outfielder also scored a run and stole three bases in the game.

Left fielder Joey Gathright collected two stolen bases for the Tides, and third baseman Brandon Pinckney was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Tides first baseman Brandon Snyder was 1-for-5 with an RBI.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Bowie Baysox 5, New Britain Rock Cats 4 (Box score)

Recap: The Baysox scored five runs in the first inning, and they held on for a 5-4 victory over New Britain.

Bowie first baseman Eric Crozier hit his second home run in as many nights since being signed by the Orioles. The 30-year-old infielder connected for a three-run shot down the right-field line with two outs in the bottom of the first.

Designated hitter Adam Donachie was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for the Baysox, and shortstop Robert Valido added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Baysox starting pitcher Radhames Liz (1-0) earned the win despite allowing four runs and four hits in five innings. The 25-year-old right-hander walked five batters, and he didn't collect any strikeouts.

Relief pitcher Josh Perrault gave up two hits, but he completed one scoreless inning to pick up his 12th save of the season for Bowie.

Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Frederick Keys 12, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 7 (Box score)

Recap: First baseman Brandon Waring smacked three hits, including a double and his 13th home run of the season, in the Keys' 12-7 win over Myrtle Beach. The 23-year-old infielder scored three runs and finished with three RBIs.

Keys starting pitcher Nathan Nery (1-3) picked up his first victory in the Carolina League after giving up four runs and nine hits in seven innings. The 23-year-old left-hander struck out 10 batters and didn't walk anyone.

Frederick first baseman Robbie Widlansky was 4-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored, while left fielder Tyler Henson added three hits and three RBIs.

Second baseman Bobby Stevens was 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored for Frederick, and catcher Billy Killian collected two hits and a run scored.

Relief pitcher Luis Lebron allowed two runs and three hits in 1 1/3 innings for the Keys, but he earned his 10th save of the season.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Game 1 score: Hagerstown Suns 4, Delmarva Shorebirds 2, 7 innings (Box score)

Game 1 recap: Center fielder Xavier Avery was 2-for-3 with an RBI, but the Shorebirds dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 4-2, to Hagerstown.

Delmarva first baseman Elvin Polanco contributed a sacrifice fly, and designated hitter Ronnie Welty was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Shorebirds starting pitcher Ryan O'Shea (5-3) allowed four runs (three earned) and three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Relief pitcher Raul Rivero tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings for Delmarva, striking out five batters and only giving up one hit.

Game 2 score: Delmarva Shorebirds 6, Hagerstown Suns 5, 9 innings (Box score)

Game 2 recap: Polanco's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Shorebirds to a 6-5 win over Hagerstown in a game that was originally scheduled for seven innings.

Delmarva shortstop Greg Miclat was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored, while outfielder Ronnie Welty added two hits and a run scored.

Starting pitcher Patrick Kantakevich gave up four runs and four hits in four innings for the Shorebirds, and he didn't factor in the decision. Delmarva relief pitcher Travis Keating (2-1) struck out two of the three batters he faced to pick up the victory.

Shorebirds catcher Brendan Monaghan hit a three-run home run, and outfielder Brian Conley was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Aberdeen IronBirds (A)

The IronBirds' matchup against Hudson Valley was postponed until Saturday, July 25 due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader on that day to make up for the rainout.

Dean,
Thanks for keeping us in the know, with the Orioles minor league players. When the Orioles sent Radhames Liz to the minors this spring, they said he would be a reliever and never a starter. Meanwhile he only starts in the minors and was recently demoted from AAA to AA. Is this a bad sign for Radhames and a good sign that the Orioles have real talented arms pushing their way to the majors?
