Today's game recaps -- June 10

The Double-A Bowie Baysox split a doubleheader on the road against the Connecticut Defenders, and the Single-A Frederick Keys lost to the Lynchburg Hillcats.

The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds beat the Lake County Captains, while the Triple-A Norfolk Tides were idle.

Prior to today's action, the Keys added right-hander Kenny Moreland from extended spring training. To make room for him, left-hander Nathan Nery was transferred to the roster of the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds.

Bowie Baysox (AA)

Game 1 score: Bowie Baysox 4, Connecticut Defenders 3, 7 innings (Box score)

Game 1 recap: First baseman Brandon Snyder was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and the Baysox squeezed past Connecticut, 4-3, by scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Bowie shortstop Robert Valido was 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored, and right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion added two hits and an RBI.

Starting pitcher Troy Patton didn't factor in the decision for the Baysox after giving up three runs (two earned) and five hits in five innings.

Baysox relief pitcher Ryan Ouellette (2-1) earned the win after tossing a scoreless inning, and Josh Perrault picked up his eighth save of the season.

Game 2 score: Connecticut Defenders 3, Bowie Baysox 2, 7 innings (Box score)

Game 2 recap: Center fielder Jonathan Tucker was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, but Bowie lost to the Defenders, 3-2, in the nightcap.

Baysox starting pitcher Sean Gleason (3-5) gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings. The 23-year-old right-hander walked two batters and collected one strikeout.

Snyder added two hits in the second game for Bowie. The 22-year-old first baseman is now batting .352 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs in 51 games for the Baysox in 2009.

Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Lynchburg Hillcats 7, Frederick Keys 6 (Box score)

Recap: Center fielder Matt Angle remained hot, but the Keys were edged by Lynchburg, 7-6.

The 23-year-old outfielder had his second four-hit performance in the past three games, raising his batting average to .295 this season. Angle collected a double and three RBIs.

Frederick designated hitter Wally Crancer was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and first baseman Robbie Widlansky added two hits and an RBI.

Making his season debut, Moreland allowed three runs (two earned) and two hits in 4 1/3 innings for Frederick. The 23-year-old right-hander retired the first 13 batters he faced.

Keys relief pitcher Brett Bordes (2-4) suffered the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) and one hit without recording an out in the game.

Second baseman Bobby Stevens and catcher Billy Killian each collected two hits for the Keys.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Score: Delmarva Shorebirds 8, Lake County Captains 2 (Box score)

Recap: Center fielder Xavier Avery and right fielder Ronnie Welty combined for nine hits in the Shorebirds' 8-2 victory over Lake County.

Avery was 5-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, two doubles and four runs scored, while Welty was 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs, two doubles and two runs scored.

Delmarva starting pitcher Ryan O'Shea (5-2) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out six batters and didn't walk anyone.

Catcher Brendan Monaghan added two RBIs for the Shorebirds.

I know it sounds like heresy but I wouldn't give Jones a big extension with Avery making his way through the ranks.

I wonder if they trade Huff if they would give Snyder a shot for the rest of the year. It would tell them their off season needs.Then again they could just ride Wiggy for a year and a half at 1st.

Geez john- Avery is ONLY in Delmarva. Not saying he isnt doing well but lets see how he hits A, AA and AAA ball before we dismiss a contract ext to Jones- gee he is ONLY hitting .350.

Wow. Avery isn't even in Frederick and we shouldn't sign AJ? Wow. I'll give you props for having the guts to say it, but that was crazy. AJ is shaping up to be a premium center fielder and he is only 23. Sign him long term before he gets too big for the O's. No question about that. Wow.
