Today's game recaps -- June 26
Good morning, everyone.
I had some computer issues last night, so I apologize for the game recaps not being posted in a timely manner. It's better late than never, however, so here they are.
The Triple-A Norfolk Tides beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox topped the Altoona Curve. The Single-A Frederick Keys fell to the Winston-Salem Dash, and the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds were routed by the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The rookie-level Bluefield Orioles picked up their first win of the season by beating the Kingsport Mets, and the GCL Orioles pounded the GCL Rays. The game between the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds and Lakewood BlueClaws was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the third inning.
There are a couple transactions to be reported in the Orioles' minor league system.
The Tides placed outfielder Jeff Fiorentino on the disabled list with a sprained finger, and the team activated infielder Justin Turner from the DL.
Before Friday's game, the Keys placed outfielder Kraig Binick on the disabled list and activated second baseman Ryan Adams from the DL.
Norfolk Tides (AAA)
Score: Norfolk Tides 4, Pawtucket Red Sox 1 (Box score)
Recap: Third baseman Melvin Dorta was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Tides to a 4-1 win over Pawtucket at Harbor Park.
Norfolk center fielder Justin Christian was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, and left fielder Joey Gathright added two hits in the victory.
Tides starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (1-2) gave up one run and seven hits in six innings, and relief pitcher Jim Miller tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his 16th save of the season.
Designated hitter Michael Aubrey made his debut for the Tides, and he was 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Also, Turner was 1-for-4 in his return from the disabled list.
Bowie Baysox (AA)
Score: Bowie Baysox 6, Altoona Curve 3 (Box score)
Recap: Second baseman Miguel Abreu was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored as the Baysox beat Altoona, 6-3.
Bowie first baseman Eric Crozier collected two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while left fielder Jonathan Tucker added a double, an RBI and a run scored.
Baysox starting pitcher John Mariotti allowed three runs (one earned) and five hits in five innings, but he didn't factor in the decision. The 24-year-old right-hander walked four batters and collected one strikeout.
Relief pitcher Chad Thall tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the victory for the Baysox, while Ryohei Tanaka blanked the Curve for two innings to earn his third save of the season.
Frederick Keys (A)
Score: Winston-Salem Dash 4, Frederick Keys 3 (Box score)
Recap: Second baseman Ryan Adams was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a run scored in his first game since returning from the disabled list, but the Keys lost, 4-3, to Winston-Salem at Harry Grove Stadium.
Frederick starting pitcher Sean Gleason gave up three runs and seven hits in seven innings. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out seven batters and issued one walk.
Relief pitcher Joe Esposito (0-1) allowed one run and two hits in two innings for Frederick.
Keys first baseman Robbie Widlansky hit an RBI double, and center fielder Matt Angle scored a run.
Delmarva Shorebirds (A)
After 2 1/2 innings, the game between the Shorebirds and BlueClaws was suspended due to rain. There was no score in the matchup, which the two teams will resume at 6:05 p.m. Saturday. Following the completion of the suspended game, Delmarva and Lakewood will play a seven-inning contest.
Aberdeen IronBirds (A)
Score: Brooklyn Cyclones 9, Aberdeen IronBirds 2 (Box score)
Recap: Starting pitcher Brandon Erbe only gave up a solo home run to Cyclones designated hitter Ralph Henriquez in three innings during his injury rehabilitation start, and the IronBirds suffered a 9-2 loss to Brooklyn at Ripken Stadium.
Aberdeen third baseman Garabez Rosa was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored, and shortstop Blake Davis collected an RBI single.
IronBirds relief pitcher Tyler Sexton (1-1) allowed five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings, and Mick Mattaliano surrendered three runs and four hits in one inning.
Bluefield Orioles (Rookie)
Score: Bluefield Orioles 4, Kingsport Mets 1 (Box score)
Recap: Second baseman Omar Casamayor was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBIs to lead the Orioles to their first win of the season, a 4-1 decision over Kingsport.
Bluefield left fielder Kipp Schutz was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and designated hitter Edinho Meyer added two hits and a run scored.
Orioles starting pitcher Jorge Almanzar (1-0) struck out seven batters in five scoreless innings. The 22-year-old right-hander allowed three hits and issued two walks.
Relief pitcher Josh Dowdy, the Orioles' 38th-round selection in this year's MLB draft, collected five strikeouts in two scoreless innings for Bluefield.
GCL Orioles (Rookie)
Score: GCL Orioles 9, GCL Rays 2 (Box score)
Recap: Relief pitcher Eiri Ramirez (1-0) allowed one unearned run and five hits in six innings, and the Orioles cruised to a 9-2 win over the Rays.
Orioles starting pitcher Zach Clark retired all six batters he faced. The 25-year-old right-hander collected three strikeouts.
First baseman David Anderson was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Orioles, and shortstop Anderson Childers was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.
Orioles right fielder Jaynnertt Melenciano added two RBIs and two runs scored, while designated hitter Bo Ford was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
