Orioles draft Flacco to begin third day
With their first pick of the third day, the Orioles selected CCBC-Catonsville third baseman Mike Flacco in the 31st round of the 2009 MLB draft.
As I'm sure you're aware by now, Flacco is the younger brother of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.
The Baltimore Sun's Mike Klingaman wrote an interesting article about Flacco's draft prospects for Wednesday's newspaper.
"I know I'm a work in progress," Flacco said to Klingaman. "But I shared an apartment with Joe [in Pikesville], and seeing what he went through last season reassured me that, if you work hard, it can be done. These [pro athletes] aren't superhuman. If Joe can be 'The Man' in football, why not me in baseball?"
Flacco, 22, just finished his first season at CCBC-Catonsville. He batted .399, and led the team with 67 hits, 14 home runs and 51 RBIs in 46 games.
It's going to be interesting to see how Flacco develops in the minor leagues, but the Orioles definitely will win some points in the city with this move.

Big points, indeed! How cool would that be? If one day [year] both Joe and Mike were both playing games in Baltimore on a Sunday in September divided by the 'walk of fame'?
What a story that would be.
And then there's Steve Bumbry! Omigosh!

I don't care if young Flacco bats .122 for his career, this move is important to the fans. Gives Joe another reason to grow fond of BMore. Hope Mike turns out to be a good ballplayer though!

Brilliant. The Os farm team will get press just about everytime Ravens play. Can you see the bio piece when Flacco goes to the superbowl?

Nice PR move. Would have been better if they would have signed Tex. though.
Now if Keon Lattimore could only hit a curveball.

He was the only guy in this year's draft that I wanted the O's to draft!
The chances of him making it out of the minor's are slim, but how cool would it be if he makes it to be a regular for Bowie (the closest team to Baltimore).
What happens first, Joe wins a Superbowl, or Mike gets a September Callup?

Hello Dean,
I am beginning to think that the front office is finally getting on track in ways to get the fans back. Actually this was a very 'minor' move(sorry just couldn't help myself) it does show that the Orioles do think about the fans opinion.
Do you think he'll get to the Bigs?

I can see it now, footballs signed by Mike and Baseballs signed by Joe all over the place.

Hey Jamie, There was no way Tex was going to sign with the Orioles. Give it a rest already. The O's offered him damn good money to sign here but you're never going to outbid the Yankees. Biggest reason of all why Tex was never going to sign here? Remember his statement that it was his wife that said he should sign with NY? and to keep peace you always do what the wife says.

I like this pick it might not be the big college but his stats could make him a prospect if healthy....
