Today's game recaps -- April 29
The Triple-A Norfolk Tides were swept in a two-game series by the Gwinnett Braves, while the Single-A Frederick Keys also lost today.
The Double-A Bowie Baysox and Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds were both victorious.
Norfolk Tides (AAA)
Score: Gwinnett Braves 8, Norfolk Tides 6 (Box score)
Recap: Orioles pitcher Rich Hill (0-1) allowed two runs and one hit in 3 1/3 innings during his second rehab start, and the Tides suffered an 8-6 loss to Gwinnett.
The 29-year-old left-hander struck out five hitters, issued one walk and allowed a two-run home run to Braves center fielder Gregor Blanco with two outs in the third inning. Hill retired the first eight hitters in the game before walking Gwinnett shortstop Antonio Perez and giving up the home run to Blanco.
Tides center fielder Justin Christian was 3-for-5 with his first home run of the season, a double and three runs scored. First baseman Oscar Salazar collected three hits and two RBIs for Norfolk, while designated hitter Robby Hammock was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Relief pitcher Ross Wolf surrendered four runs and three hits in 2 2/3 innings, which was the first time he allowed an opponent to score in 2009.
Bowie Baysox (AA)
Score: Bowie Baysox 6, Erie SeaWolves 1 (Box score)
Recap: Baysox second baseman Miguel Abreu was 5-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the team's 6-1 victory over Erie. Catcher Adam Donachie was 3-for-3 with an RBI, two walks and two runs scored for Bowie.
Brandon Erbe (1-3) pitched well again for the Baysox, and he was able to pick up the victory for the first time in 2009. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed three hits in six scoreless innings against the SeaWolves. Bowie relief pitcher Wilfrido Perez tossed 1 1/3 innings without giving up a hit.
Bowie first baseman Melvin Dorta and center fielder Ambiorix Concepcion each added an RBI.
Alfredo Figaro, who was scheduled to start for the SeaWolves, didn't pitch due to a sore back. In his place, Jay Sborz (0-1) gave up four runs (two earned) and four hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Frederick Keys (A)
Score: Winston-Salem Dash 9, Frederick Keys 4 (Box score)
Recap: Starting pitcher John Mariotti (1-1) allowed four runs and five hits in five innings, and the Keys suffered a 9-4 loss to Winston-Salem. The 24-year-old right-hander collected five strikeouts and walked three batters.
Frederick left fielder Kraig Binick was 1-for-4 with his second home run in as many days -- a solo shot in the first inning. Third baseman Brandon Waring was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Keys.
First baseman Chris Vinyard, catcher Caleb Joseph and designated hitter Billy Killian added an RBI each in the loss.
Delmarva Shorebirds (A)
Score: Delmarva Shorebirds 8, Lakewood BlueClaws 1 (Box score)
Recap: The Shorebirds collected a season-high 19 hits in an 8-1 victory over Lakewood on Wednesday morning at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
Delmarva right fielder Ronnie Welty led the attack by going 4-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter Joe Mahoney was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and center fielder Xavier Avery collected three hits for the Shorebirds.
Left fielder Kyle Hudson and second baseman LJ Hoes each added two hits and scored two runs for Delmarva, while first baseman Elvin Polanco and shortstop Greg Miclat both had a multi-hit game.
Shorebirds starting pitcher Cole McCurry (1-0) earned the victory after giving up one run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old left-hander struck out four hitters. Pat Egan tossed a scoreless inning for Delmarva. The 24-year-old right-hander hasn't allowed a run in nine innings this season.

Well the Tides have lost the last 2 games with Waters and Hill on the mound.Salazar continues to rake. How much worse would he be than Wiggy? Nolan keeps rollin.
Somehow Weiters seems like a regular human being so far this year. I know his hammy has held him back some but I always wondered how he would adjust to breaking balls.If they did bring him up,he would get pounded on his fists to keep the ball away from the meat of his bat.
Didn't realize AAA had a 7 day DL,what's the prognosis on Berken?

Erbe seems to be blowing up any and everything at AA Bowie. I didn't know the kid was THIS good.

How about including some batting averages and ERA's on some of our young birds?
Thanks for the coverage, I check in each day to see how the kids are doing.

I'd prefer more in-depth discussion on how they are doing with their change-ups and hitting breaking pitches plus their fielding difficulties or strengths. This way you get a true feeling for how talented a player really is and how close they are to the ML level.
Erbe's always had talent and high quality stuff but his mechanics were a mess which limited his success at times. If his mechanics are in order then we might have ourselves another top of the rotation starter.
