Ray Frager joined
The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for
The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.
Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at
The Trenton Times and
The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.
Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of
The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.
He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.

My viewing and listening pretty much revolves around Anita Marks -- whenever she's on, I go somewhere -- anywhere -- else on the dial, be it during the week. or during the 105.7 FM "Game Day" broadcasts. With Long now at 1370, I now have one more button to eliminate on my radio -- what a clueless, illiterate joke he is.

As if local sports radio wasn't watered down enough already. Rob Long is no big loss for WNST. "Rob from Woodlawn" was probably the most unprepared and unknowledgable host on the local air waves -- next to Anita Marks. Hope Scott Garceau's back doesn't give out from carrying her around now.

1370 am finally adding some more local flavor to sports with Coleman, Rome and Czaban -- Good!!.
Posted by: kevin port26 | January 12, 2009 11:17 PM
Czaban was the only good morning show on Baltimore airwaves. This is a bad move, unless you want to talk about wrestling with Long.
Posted by: Frank | January 13, 2009 8:07 AM
I don't think Long and Nestor got along. Rob left or was on hiatus for a couple days about a year ago but returned.
Posted by: Thomas | January 13, 2009 8:33 AM
Since when is Jim Rome local! Czaban's First Team show is also a national show!

I can't believe people are comparing Rob to Anita Marks. Rob and Bob Haynie combined for the most informative, thoughtful radio shows in Baltimore. That they were back-to-back was an added bonus. Now, they are up against each other and that is a shame. Rob ALWAYS has a different view on things, one that you won't get anywhere else. For instance, "Michael Jordan turned the NBA into a circus." His thoughts on the Ravens always make me look at things from another angle.
He is easily one of the best radio hosts in Baltimore. Not only for his knowledge, but because, like Haynie, he is a true Baltimore FAN. Ironically, most of the hosts on the station that calls itself "the Fan" could care less about the local teams - they are not from this area, and are just doing their jobs. Scott Garceau is probably the one exception.
FOX 1370 just got stronger, but it is already so weak Rob Long won't even be able to save it. WNST got a whole lot weaker, and "the Fan" is a joke.

All along I've said that 1370 is the local sports station that is going down; WNST has the Web site and the Cult of Nestor, WJZ-FM has the Orioles, the FM, and the local content, and WJZ-AM has ESPN radio-still the best national sports source.
While Rob is not the best host in town, he's pleasant enough and gives WVIE a better local to national mix.
Maybe they can hang on.

ILLITERATE & CLULESS OR WERE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF?

I enjoyed Rob Long's show, which I found to be entertaining and informative. He had a good way of talking with callers, and just seems like an overall good guy. Good luck with the move, Rob.

Good luck to r-o-b-l-o-n-g. Won't listen to him much now that he is up against Bob Haynie.
Anita Marks must go. Sshe is absolutely terrible.
Posted by: deuce | January 13, 2009 10:31 AM
I thought Rob was overrated. He should have given appropriate notice. I think he left because the heat from Bruce Cunningham and Scott Garceau got to be too much. Anita Marks sucks, Rob was better, but he can't hold Bruce or Scott's jock strap when it comes to radio.

Nestor is a "flaming" self-centered idiot.
Bod Haynie is the best thing going in local sports talk. Rob has a ways to go, but he is always good to listen to.
It's impossible to listen to the Angry Little Man in the Morning.
Good luck, Rob!

I'll miss Rob. He had a hometown feel that not many radio people have anymore. WNST is a joke in the morning with Drew - whatever happened to Terry Ford?
Posted by: J Fozzola | January 13, 2009 12:45 PM
Ed you are a hater. Stop calling in to WNST all day long with nonsense.
Posted by: Tim from Perry Hall | January 13, 2009 2:16 PM
Tim, don't like my calls? Then don't listen. BTW, I never call all day long. The only show I have called in the last year is Drew in the morning because it is the only time I have to listen while going to work. If I have called the other shows five times in the last year that would be an overestimate. So you must be talking about someone else or you don't know what you are talking about. Perhaps you are thinking about Rick from Reisterstown or Bob from Parkville. Which is it?
Posted by: Ed from Park Heights | January 13, 2009 2:49 PM
Hey! Dont talk about Bob from Parkville, he is my Gradfather!

Terry Ford can usually be heard on 1370, Friday afternoons from 3 - 6 p.m. as a guest on the Jerry Coleman show. Too bad they didn't give him his own show. Someone should.
Posted by: michael | January 13, 2009 4:07 PM
Terry tells too many dirty and juvenile jokes for my taste. I want to hear sports, not seventh-grade humor.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 13, 2009 5:45 PM
In my opinion, Baltimore lacks much talent when it comes to sports talk. Sad as it is to say, Nestor is the best of the bunch. Drew thinks his "stuff" doesnt stink, and if you disagree, you wont be on for long without being talked over. Haynie is a borefest. Rob Long is not great, but he was the best thing on WNST. People like Cunningham and Viviano are horrid and try too hard to act like they are from here. Jerry Coleman is suprisingly good as long as he doesn't mix in too much Terry Ford and his bathroom one-liners. Mike Preston on with Coleman is very good radio. It is starting to look like Nestor might need to get back on the air to save the ratings that his station still has.

People have a right to their opinion, but you gauge a good host by can he or she do radio In a top 10 market or not. Most Baltimore sports radio people cannot. Rob Long Is one of the few who could go to a top 10 market and make It. Rob knows his sports.

Get more of the Fighting Ungers!!!!
Posted by: Bernie Huddlestun | January 14, 2009 11:15 AM
I think the Fighting Ungers was WNST's biggest loss and Im looking forward to hearing them on Fox at a better time slot.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 14, 2009 11:22 AM
Fighting Ungers is the best! I would love to hear more!
Posted by: Charity | January 14, 2009 4:32 PM
Finally, some people with some taste are posting on this blog. The Fighting Ungers rock! The rest of the shows are terrible.
Posted by: Jim | January 14, 2009 5:29 PM
I like the Ungers. They make a good team. I have gotten tired of cookie-cutter radio shows. The ungers are different, and they bring personality to sports talk. I'm a fan.
Posted by: steve lapinkski | January 15, 2009 2:34 AM
Yes, that is what I want to hear! More of the Fighting Ungers! Those guys are hilarious and worthwhile to listen to! Let's get those guys on Fox more often!
Posted by: Kat | January 15, 2009 7:59 AM
I've had the privilege of meeting and talking with Rob on a few occasions. First and foremost, Rob is one of the "good guys" in the radio biz. Second, too bad for Nestor this one got away from him. Will it sink his ship? No, but it is a tough loss, one that will linger for a while.
Posted by: SAMP76 | January 15, 2009 12:31 PM
The Rob Long Show was the best show on WNST. Something happened for Rob Long, who was committed to WNST, to leave suddenly. And only Nestor himself can enlighten his listeners to the facts of Rob's sudden departure.
Good Luck to Rob and wherever he goes, my ears will follow.
Posted by: Janice | January 15, 2009 9:17 PM
I usually measure a host by when I disagree with him or her. Can they lay out the facts to support their opinion? Or do they simply recant the most recent morsel or rely on the "I just feel ..." explanation?
Rob Long may not have convinced me that often, but his take usually had merit. I got the feeling he spent enough time around sports to get it, really get it.
I will miss him because I do not have access to the radio at his new time for the most part, and I enjoy Bob Haynie and his array of guests.
As for The Snidely Dungers, they are 24-carat atrocious. They remind me of the surly junior high school students that thinks by insulting all that's around them, they have automatically elevated themselves. That misperception of self is their only humorous aspect.
Posted by: waspman | January 16, 2009 2:59 AM
I get the sense that Nestor and his cronies, maybe even that Lester IS his cronies, who is trashing Rob Long.
I'd pass on WNST altogether if not for those other than Nestor.
He did do well to get rid of the Ungers from Hunger, though.
