How's that again, Anita?

Good thing I had both hands on the steering wheel when I was listening to 105.7 today. Anita Marks was praising some of the Orioles' moves since Andy MacPhail's arrival and ranked the Miguel Tejada trade among the majors' all-time best.

All together now: Say what?

Yes, most would agree it was a good move. However, to recap, the Orioles traded Tejada to the Astros for Luke Scott, Matt Albers, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate and Michael Costanzo. The Tejada deal wasn't even the club's best of last offseason. (That was the Erik Bedard trade, which netted the Orioles Adam Jones, George Sherrill and three minor leaguers.)

Scott Garceau, perhaps not believing what he just heard and hoping the comment might vanish into the ether, didn't try to correct her.

She has lost her mind.

Just shows the depth of her sports knowledge. Quite impressive, huh? Schmuck isn't far behind her, though, with his staying the course comments and applauding an absolutely horrid off-season. Signing Joe Crede would give the team an everyday 3B. It would offer Dave Trembley the option of Melvin Mora off the bench to play SS, 3B, OF and DH. That's lots of flexibility. Sign Orlando Cabrera to play SS, not a .250 hitting no power guy who can't even steal a base that AM signed. But what was the O's biggest eye-sore last season as August wore on? The same it's been for years and years--starting pitching. What's AM done to fix it? Signed a Japanese pitcher coming off injuries who has never pitched in the majors (in the U.S.) as the #2 starter. Garland, Sheets, and how many others are still out there. Maybe he's got something else up his sleeve but so far, his moves haven't been awe inspiring. Oh, as for the trades, so far it looks like Jones for Bedard. If some of the others reach the majors and make a mark, we'll measure the trade and maybe Anita will prove to be right--(yeah, I'm holdin' my breath on that one).

the reality is she's doesn't have a clue.

you notice bal didn't let Davis go till after Marks was extended on105.7 B A L didn't want him going to the strongest competition pretty smart, huh.

Or, as my Grandmother and big time O's fan use to say "everyone is entitled to their opinion, even when it's wrong."

Anita's schtick is that she's an attractive woman who knows sports. Argue whether or not either of those is valid, that's not my point. She stays on because there is a certain segment of the population that listens solely because she is a woman.

Keep in mind that she's a football person first, and she does know her football. She also has more connections to people in the sports industry than anyone else in the market, her broadcast partner included. Plus, she's the most open about gambling than anyone else on radio here, and for those who are interested in that it's a big plus. Most everyone else tries to pretend that gambling on football (and other things, but mostly football) doesn't exist. She also brought fantasy sports into the spotlight on her show, when most everyone else dabbled at it or decried it as the devil's work for making people care about individual stats over team wins.

"The Tejada deal wasn't even the club's best of last offseason. (That was the Erik Bedard trade, which netted the Orioles Adam Jones, George Sherrill and three minor leaguers.)"

You nailed it, Ray.

Well, it was at least a little better than that Glenn Davis trade....

I think it's a little too early to judge where this trade ranks all time. I don't think that the comment was that ridiculous though considering the overall numbers that Tejada put up. We would have won that trade just getting Luke Scott alone.

She says at least one thing this dumfounding every time I listen to her. It's like when you've had a few too many beers and you're talking sports with a few friends, and all of a sudden you hear yourself saying things that you don't necessarily believe.

She just talks, with no real internal filter of what's logical or coherent.

[subject] + [superlative] + [position or situation] +[timeframe].

"Jamarcus Russell is one of the best QBs to ever come into this league."

or

"The Tejada Trade was one of the best trades of all time"

Both things she's actually said, both things that follow her equation of stupidity.

It isn't too early to judge the Tejada trade. By no stretch of anyones imagination does this trade qualify as great--let alone greatest of all time. Tejada might be on his way out in Houston, and the O's think so much of Luke Scott in left, they brought two guys in (Pie, Friel) to replace him there. The Beddard trade was much better, and FYI the greatest O's trade ever was Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson in the 1960's.

Are you kidding me? I'd say it was a good, smart trade but great? I wanna see what Troy Patton does before I even consider it to be great. That was pure idiocy from her, I bet Garceau was too shocked to correct her.

Scott didnt correct because he has given up. He was probably texting his agent to get in touch with BAL and wasn't even paying attentin to her.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
