Rich Gannon's fumbles

It's a good thing CBS puts such a good play-by-play man as Kevin Harlan with Rich Gannon, because the former quarterback does have his problems giving analysis. During today's Ravens game, Gannon referred to Browns tight end Steve Heiden as "Eric Heiden" (watch for him in those icy games in December); said something about Cleveland defensive back Sean Jones' coverage of the tight end, but mentioned Kellen Winslow, who happens to also play for the Browns; and had trouble drawing anything coherent on the Telestrator.

Comments

Too many of the announcers/analysts believe they must say something after every play even when they really don't know what to say.

Gannon also had the Ravens' offense "struggling" after they'd just scored back-to-back TDs and Kevin Harlan made at least three wrong down calls.

How about saying the Ravens have have been terrible on third-and-short all season?

Or saying Derreck Mason is known for his yards after the catch?

Both couldn't be further from the truth.

Gannon stinks.

He also had the brilliant statement that "the momentum seems to be turning" after the Ravens had scored back-to- back touchdowns and held the Browns to three consecutive three-and-outs." ... duh!

Whatever Gannon did is probably still the result of Goose sitting on him all those eight years ago. So is it OK to get excited now when the offense is on the field? Do we dare say, we actually HAVE an offense teams actually have to prepare for?

Yeah, Gannon had a few gaffes, but I thought he showed a good amount of knowledge about the Ravens. Probably because he's done a few of our games this season.

Gannon's not going to come even close to reading that.

I think that Gannon saw the Ravens and had flashbacks to getting splashed by Goose in the playoffs. There was a Rich Gannon-sized implant in the grass that day.

If Kevin Harlan said, "...and Corey Ivy is the game..." one more time, I would thrown a brick. He acted like Ivy was Deon Sanders or Rod Woodson.

---------------------

Ray replies: I think Harlan was just pointing out Ivy's presence to note the use of an extra defensive back.

Gannon still carries a grudge, and it shows through embarrassingly.

Actually, Gannon was very complimentary to the Ravens the year before he retired, if I recall correctly. He said that he wanted to be the QB of the Ravens, due to their defense, and could probably give them what they needed (at the time a good QB!).

Personally, I think he's been fair enough, and remember, Joe Flacco is an alum of Delaware, which Gannon is as well. And, Gannon stated at the start of this year that he gave Joe his cell number, to call him whenever he wanted (as a fellow alum).

Just some thoughts.

Wow, insightful comment. It's a good thing that you have never mis-pronounced a name Ray. Even you have, no one would notice because you don't have millions listening to you on live TV.

Gannon is certainly irritating. But tomorrow we get the worst out there-Tony Kornheiser. I'll put him up against anybody for flapping his gums. Everytime he says Jaawws, I want to throw something at the TV.

Gannon ain't got a grudge. Folks, he went to Delaware, the same place Flacco did. Get real.

What drives me the "most" nuts about gannon is the way he says the work "athletic". He pronounces it "ath-uh-letic" and "ath-uh-lete." I know, it's kind of petty, but still really irritating. Now maybe you all will notice, too. You're welcome! :)

Up, down, in and out. What a football game yesterday. Yes, I heard Gannon misspeak, but with all the football action going on, who gives a crap? You want to listen to commentators rather than watch football, then watch Saturday night with Brent Musburger and that young fellow. They are great. Hell, if I could get WBAL in clear down here, that's what I'd listen to rather than the TV sound. That's what I listened to when I lived in Baltimore. Much more flavor, far more exciting.

I thought the broadcast team was mediocre. I give kudos to all broadcast teams as to getting the players mostly correct, after all, they see so many through the season. My gripe is their cliches:
1. "...almost intercepted..." as it is touched by a defender who if he was a receiver it would have been called too high, off the mark. After all, they may play defense because they couldn't catch a ball to begin with.
2."...a catch and run..." after every catch by both Harlan and Gannon.

If it weren't for the 1.5 second delay between the radio broadcast and the HD video from Comcast, I would listen to the radio.

But it's hard to watch when you know what the play does before you can see it.

Not sure if anyone heard this, but when they showed the halftime stats going overwhelmingly in the Ravens' favor, Gannon said something to the effect of "The Browns are really in control in this game." I nearly broke my TV set...then hit the mute button.

This I believe is the second game of the Ravens that Gannon has done. I know that broadcasters are supposed to be impartial, but I think he could really added to the enjoyment of the game by sharing with us some insights that he must have on Joe. What is the harm in sharing the fact that they are both Blue Hens?

The one other gaffe -- and I was bitching about Gannon yesterday, too, I was actually surprised because he's been pretty good on other occasions -- was when he was talking about another intentional grounding by Flacco when he was clearly outside the pocket. A QB with NFL experience should not get that call wrong.

Gannon was upset because he will soon no longer be the "best quarterback" from the University of Delaware to play in the NFL.

I don't know if it was Rich or Kevin, but one of them said that the Ravens struggle on converting on third-and-short, while two weeks ago it was stated that the Ravens were the best in the league at converting on third-and-short. Can't imagine that they have gone from best to worst in two weeks, especially since the Ravens are on a three-game winning streak!

I'm sick and tired of hearing the announcers talking about how the Ravens used to be the Browns.

Do you ever hear announcers talk about how the St Louis Rams (formerly Los Angeles) used to be the Cardinals (formerly St. Louis)? Or how the Colts used to be in Baltimore?

-------------

Ray replies: Actually, yes.

Gannon is terrible. The bloggers responding here are much more observant than Gannon was. Frager nails it again.

------------

Ray replies: The check is in the mail.

Whoever called the game against Miami has so far been my favorite. I didnt feel at all like I was being cheerleaded.

I think Ian Eagle gets me the most... "HE TAKES IT 3 YARDS TO THEIR OWN 16!!! FIRST DOWN CLEVELAND!!!!" Then Solomon Wilcotts would add on something that almost sounds like trash talk.

Did he have a heart attack or something getting overexerted? Thank God I havent had to hear him in a while. Got excited about the littlest things.

How many times did Harlan say, hangtime is everything here?

Kevin Harlan is da bomb!
A lot of information on lines and defense. He has a great spotter and delivers the info seamlessly in real time.
The hangtime WAS important. Josh Cribbs is a monster, I had no idea!

I'll take Harlan every game. Could have used a better explanation of the intentional grounding, however.

I tell you I am glad that someone is bringing up how bad Gannon is. That guy is brutal and shouldn't be on the air. I think he is still bitter about Goose smashing him and putting him out of that AFC championship during the Super Bowl run. I was hard on the Ravens all that game. He sucks. Harlan is cool with me.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
