More on sports radio change

Just got done speaking with Bob Philips, senior vice president of CBS Radio Baltimore. Here is some more on the changes at 105.7 FM and 1300 AM:

*The simulcast will continue today, then tomorrow 1300 will switch to its all-ESPN Radio lineup.

*The call letters of the stations are changing: 105.7 officially becomes WJZ-FM and 1300 officially is WJZ-AM, establishing a link wth Channel 13, which is a CBS affiliate. However, 105.7 will call itself Sports Radio 105.7 The Fan.

*Ed Norris' show won't change just because he's now on a sports station. "I think Ed will talk about sports when there is sports to talk about," Philips said.

*In their roles as co-hosts, Scott Garceau and Anita Marks will both be on during 105.7's Ravens players shows. Speaking of the Garceau-Marks pairing, Philips said: "I think Scott has been around and they'll make a great team. It's not so much Anita losing [her own show] -- she's gaining a partner. I think they offer great balance."

*On the large amount of sports talk now on the air in Baltimore, Philips said: "We did some research that shows there is a lot of upside to sports. Baltimore is a big sports town, and it can support this."

The city now has four sports radio stations: 105.7, 1300, Fox Sports 1370 and WNST (1570 AM). Plus, WBAL (1090 AM) has weeknight sports talk and weekend sports programming.

Seems to me we need some more teams to match all of the talk.

It is so nice we will get to hear a professional in the 3 p.m. time slot. Anita Marks is horrible. Why she is even on the air is unimaginable. Count the number of "um"s and "uh-uh-uh"s and "like-ya-know"s in any five-minute period. She doesn't get out of my Radio One class. And her relentless kissing up to the likes of Willis McGahee and Chris McAlister leave her with zero credibility. Always needing to be beefed up with someone in the studio who knows what they're talking about, she's an embarrassment. Unlistenable. She obviously knows somebody or is related to somebody at that station. There's plenty of talent there -- Mark Zinno, Amber-Theo. Please lets hope this is just Anita "guess-where-I-went-out-to-dinner-last-night" Marks' first step out the door. Welcome aboard, Scott.

What are their plans with their live broadcasts of Orioles and Terrapins games? As for Anita, glad she will be reined in some. Maybe she will go away next. And take her shameless plugs for David Sedeghi(sp.) and his restaurants. Just because you eat free doesn't mean we all get to, Anita.

Ray replies: I don't see any reason this change will affect O's or Terps.

So what's going to happen to Kirk and Mark, Troy Johnson and Mike Pintak?

I don't like the Ed move to the morning slot either, I gotta get my Mickey and Amelia in then!

Does Baltimore REALLY need ANOTHER sports talk radio station?!

I thought the afternoon format at HFS was perfect with the three different political perspectives. Any word on whats gonna happen to all them?

"Mad props to my man T-Sizzle. OK. Mad props"

~Anita Marks

Baltimore has sports talk radio? NO WAY!!! I know there's W-IDIOT at the 1500 end of the dial. Speaking of idiots, when will they get Bob from Parkville to team up with "Brian" to do a show?... And moving Carrie Bradshaw from 1300 is discrimination. Ever notice she only does her "rap" voice only when she has a black guy as a guest.? I just hope she doesn't wear off on Scott Garceau. I think the FCC would fine the station if they heard Garceau say, "and Cmac had a little sumpin-sumpin for Ocho." Maybe it's because 105.7 has a hair stylist from the 21st century. You'd think "Cmac" would get her a new haircut for her birthday ... being that he's one of her peeps.

What does this do to "Monday Morning Quarterback" with Tom Matte and Bruce Laird ?

Bob Philips wouldn't know talent if slapped him in the face. That station is 100 percent unlistenable!!!!!

Custard Doug -- I'ts "mad CRAZY props...YO!"

Dont sell her short now.

I dont care what that clown from CBS says, the writing is on the wall and she has one foot out the door. She went from the host's chair to the guest chair and will go from the guest chair back to Miami, where she belongs.

Anita is unlistenable and Garceau is a professional who at least understands sports. Maybe Anita can get a job as a Fox sideline reporter .... maybe team up with Danyelle Sargeant? I can see alot of laughs there. Also, we need to see more of Amy Fedool from Fox 45 (preferably in HD).

Brian Wilson will be moving to WCBM to talk sports and with Obama winning the election, Anita Marks will be hosting a new political show on 1300. She will do her show entirely in "jive" and host the same group of Ravens players weekly to discuss politics and world events, and to give daily mad props to Obama.

Anita can't leave Baltimore fast enough (for her or us). I feel sorry for Scott. Hopefully he is being well compensated.

Rick,

My beef with the Marks show was more with her "wingmen."

Zinno and Jeremy Conn dripped condescension like it was a bodily fluid everywhere, spending most of their time calling the callers idiots and jerks. They also spent every waking moment trying to undermine Anita and in Conn's case, hitting on her as often as possible. Wally Williams seemed like a nice fellow, but if they had not spent all that time telling us he was a former Ravens O-lineman, you would never have known it.

Based on the last two days, Garceau, who seems like a decent enough fellow, is doing his best to push Marks out the door, not that that will be very hard to do. I sure hope Anita has her resume out there.

I love the new lineup on 105.7 except that they kept Anita Marks on the air. Garceau is great and Viviano is good but needs to ditch the Bull-puppy. Ken Weinman is fantastic and would be better if he was on earlier, maybe with Garceau. It's a shame that most people don't hear the local kid at his time slot of 8-11 p.m. He is a local voice that has some decent insight. Either way, from Norris all the way to Weinman at night (if we remove the yappy one from Garceau's show), 105.7 has a great lineup and my radio dial will never be changed.

This new lineup is excellent and with the exception of Marks, makes the most of some very good on-air talent.

Viviano has always been objective and informative. "The Bulldog" is, at least, entertaining and a decent partner for Viviano.

Hearing Garceau's voice in Marks' time slot was absolutely wonderful.

I am certain that Anita Marks is just working off a contract before she sees the door. I did tune into her show, but soon found that I liked it much more when Ken Weinman or others would fill in.

You guys are ruthless. Anita brings a good kick to Baltimore sports. She's "sassy"! She can be a little biased with C Mac. She had me convinced that he wasn't injured. Other than that, I like Anita and I'm not much of a Scott Garceau fan, because he has a tendency to cut people off. It felt really weird watching Anita on MASN sitting in the guest seat. Keep Anita and give Scott his own show. You can lose Jeremy. I'm not sure how he got the job. Zinno's not bad, he and Anita make a good team.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for making such a great move. People who live in western Maryland already have a tough enough time listening to Baltimore sports as we are smothered with D.C. sports, but at least we could listen to 1300 AM in our cars. I hate to inform you, but 1300 has way better reception than 105.7. Maybe thats why their ratings were so bad. Here's to them finding a better satellite. Meanwhile its back to Colin Cowherd show for anyone who lives outside 695 beltway.

Hey Anita,

Get off the air in Baltimore ASAP before your "VALUE" drops as low as Freddy Bynums'...NO ONE WILL WANT or NEED YOU !!!!!!!!!! \

P. S. maybe some radio or tv station in South Beach if your so _____.

loved your post
Thanks

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
