Garceau shows his value
It didn't take long. On his first show with Anita Marks Monday on the newly configured 105.7 The Fan, Scott Garceau illustrated how he will help make the program better. Marks was talking about the Ravens' offense and its move to being more run-oriented. She said the Ravens were more of a passing offense under Brian Billick. Garceau pointed out how the Ravens were very much run-oriented under Billick when Jamal Lewis was having his best seasons. (In fact, as recently as 2004, the Ravens finished the season with more rushes than passing attempts.)
Adding Garceau is perhaps the best move station management has made with its format change for 105.7. He has worked in Baltimore for nearly 30 years and has the respect of fans and those within the sporting scene. Maybe he's not flashy, but Garceau knows what he's talking about. Marks has worked with a series of microphone-sharers, but this is set up as a full-time co-hosting situation. It's worth hearing how this partnership works.

Ray, I could not agree with you more. Listening to Scott was refreshing. Anita was one of the worst hosts EVER for a sports talk show. I can listen to a female sports talk host, but she NEVER had a point that held mustard. Her producer had better points, and he is the producer NOT THE HOST!!! The host should have the good arguments and points.
I dislike the Skins, but at least Steve Czaban makes great points.

She said the Ravens were more of a passing offense under Brian Billick.

This is why it pays to do your homework. She is just dreadful.

I listened yesterday, and I thought it was very interesting. It seemed like Marks was disturbed by Garceau being there. On multiple topics, Garceau politely corrected Marks or gave the opposing point of view, which she never got before when she just flirted with the other people on the show. You could tell that things were falling apart for Marks before because Zinno and others who were on that show were getting very argumentive with her also. I know the station wants a femaile voice, but can't they get someone who does not have a stuttering problem and an overall lack of sports knowledge? Garceau is going to have to carry her if they are going to continue to have that prime-time spot.

Agreed that Garceau brings a measure of credibility and deserves respect for his long history in Baltimore. But please, your example clearly shows (again) that Marks is absolutely clueless!! A passing offense under Billick? Laughable...

Marks sucks ... send her back to Miami. Just another in a long line of dim-witted female "sportscasters" who know ZERO about what they're trying to talk about.
Posted by: Rich | November 4, 2008 9:15 AM
The best microphone sharing would be having just Scott Garceau and getting rid of Anita. She is above her head in this role. She comes off as naive and sophomoric time and time again.
When interviewing, she barely can form a coherent question. Get rid of Anita!
Posted by: brandon | November 4, 2008 9:16 AM
Anita Marks is clueless! Scott Garceau is great when it comes to the Ravens. I wish he still called play-by-play.
Posted by: Brad | November 4, 2008 9:17 AM
Who needs Marks when you've got Scott Garceau? I think that's what the station will ultimately wonder, too. Between his media acumen, knowledge of Baltimore sports past and present, and having the pulse of and respect of the fans, gosh, Anita just looks amateurish next to him.
Posted by: Pete | November 4, 2008 9:20 AM
Or better yet, just show Marks the door. She's horrible, and doesn't know her rear end from her elbow. If Scott Garceau is doing afternoon drive time without her, I'll be able to listen again.
Posted by: Bill Drain | November 4, 2008 9:26 AM
I've never listened to Anita Marks, but based on what I've heard about her show, I wasn't missing much. Now, based on what you just wrote, it's not so much that Scott shows his value (not that I question it, the man brings 30 years of experience to the table) as Marks shows her complete ignorance.
"Ravens more of a passing offense under Billick." Oh, man ... if she were on TV, I could understand, but on radio that pretty face doesn't offset her complete lack of sport knowledge. How long has she been in town? You could be here one season and know that comment makes the Top Ten stupid comments of the year.

As others have pointed out, this is a great move. I too understand that management wants a female sportscaster, but at least they should get one that has a clue. There is no doubt that she is connected in the industry and has a good rapport with the athletes; however, Garceau is a class act across the board. He is connected, he is informed, he can admit when he is wrong, and most importantly, he can ask a question or get a point across without stammering for five minutes.

Scott Garceau is a much needed voice on the airwaives! He is also missed VERY much on Ravens broadcasts!!! WBAL should have gone with what was already working.

This may be the one of the greatest days of my life. When Marks came on the air a year or two ago, I sent an e-mail to management complaining how bad she was (and I never care enough to do something like that ever). She was that bad. Only to hear from management that she would grow on Baltimore listeners. I see that worked out well. She has no local knowledge. I love the Ravens so much that I had to suffer through her talking just to get my fix. I would just be hoping the producers would talk more than her. I also looked forward to her traveling to her shows with the Ravens players so she would be off the air during that half hour or so. I really hope this is just the first step in Garceau replacing her completely.

If they want a female voice that knows sports, bring back Sage Steele. She was impressive as a Ravens reporter and now has a national background to round her out. Dump Anita and bring back Sage.

People from Baltimore want a "Baltimore" sports talk show, not a show that's about Anita's life in South Beach. Her problem has been trying to do a national topical show, instead of just sticking with our area. I really don't see this combo lasting more than one month. Anita will probably be home for Hanukkah, with her "boyz" from the hood.

She is blonde, you know.
Posted by: Eastern Shoreman | November 4, 2008 11:26 AM
Yes, management, she has grown on me like a fungus. I watched on MASN and not only did she sound disturbed by Garceau being there, she looked disturbed as well. If I had to guess, she is there for a contractual reason only. I can't stand when she interviews, she giggles and sounds as if she is flirting more than anything else. 1300 is dead to me, I do not like any of the national garbage.

Time for the cutesy approach with nothing between her ears to get her Come Uppins.
She hasn't the vaguest idea what she speaks about. Notice she interrupts constantly and speaks over people continuously. She likes to hear herself talk to boost her own ego. Certainly no one else will.

Ray,
I cannot imagine Anita is all too thrilled about this arrangement. At one point yesterday, I thought I heard Scott Garceau come back from break stating, "This is the Scott Garceau Show with Anita Marks."
I know her contract runs through at least May, but considering that she pines for her life in Miami, and the fact that she is now clearly second fiddle, do you think she may throw in the towel early and go back to Miami?
Posted by: Scooter | November 4, 2008 11:54 AM
Anita Marks is not smart when it comes to sports. Maybe she can get a job in the kitchen. Next step is to take her off the air permanently.
Posted by: JDM | November 4, 2008 12:07 PM
Scott Garceau has always been knowledgeable and credible. I was hoping WBAL would hire him to replace Sandusky calling the games.
Posted by: Coleen Deems | November 4, 2008 12:35 PM
Marks will be gone by next year, and thank God. Have you ever had a pebble in your shoe and could not untie the knot in your laces to get it out? That was Anita Marks , the pebble in your shoe. Thank you, Scott, for untying the knot, we missed you !

I am not a big fan of Anita Marks but never found her particularly ignorant. I give her credit for working hard and having contacts. I personally felt that the interruptions from the "peanut gallery" were a sign of impending doom and did nothing to add to the show, merely undercut what authority Anita may have had. Stylistically, she is a reflection of sports today, too much emphasis on the TMZ aspect of sports reporting. Obviously, this is the majority of sports fans and the folks who have posted here are the minority because the NFL embraces the T.O. storylines, the "Ocho Cinco" storyline and the other TMZ type of reporting. There is no more media savvy entity than the NFL, so I just accept that I am in the minority. I suggest others here do the same.

What's the status Of Amber Theoharis at the station?
She is much more knowledgeable and local than Anita Marks, and in my opinion would be a much improved partner with Scott Garceau !
Ray PLEASE comment...

Ray replies: Since you asked me ... I don't know about Theoharis yet. I will check. I'm not going to knock the Garceau-Marks combo until it has been on the air for a little while.

I thought Pam Ward was a lot better than Anita.
Posted by: Dave | November 4, 2008 1:13 PM
Methinks Anita is smart enough to see the writing on the walls. She just didn't sound comfortable yesterday. I like the fact that she played ball, that she does fantasy, that she has a rapport with the athletes ... BUT...105.7 management could walk into just about ANY Ravens bar and pull a woman with comparable knowledge. Good luck, Anita, wherever your career takes you next.

I love it! Not one person likes Anita Marks She is worthless.

How is Baltimore going to get on the map in sports talk radio if you all live here??!! Scott Garceau is a great guy, but I've never been so bored in my life as to listen to this slow-paced same old, cookie-cutter Baltimore "hon" show. Anita was a breath of fresh air, with Jeremy and Zinno adding to a fun, entertaining ambience. I guess it's back to Smalltimore local shows. Makes sense you all don't like Anita Marks; you probably want to tear down Harbor East and put up some bowling alleys, too, and not the new, fun Mustang Alleys ... alleys where you can wear purple camos!!

The beginning of the end for Anita. She is a pathetic jock sniffer that thinks she knows sports because she played "professional" women's football. Does that make me a an expert in brain surgery because I played Operation as a kid? I did stay in a Holiday Inn once, though.
Posted by: TAJ | November 4, 2008 2:14 PM
WOW - 100 percent unanimous feelings on Marks.
I live in DC, but grew up in Columbia -- so I have an interest in Baltimore sports. I have a TV at work so I watch on MASN.
It just looked awkward and uncomfortable with Scott G. sitting in the chair where she used to sit and Anita on the other side of the table.
Oof. This won't last long.
Posted by: Franklin | November 4, 2008 2:34 PM
TAJ,
If I have to listen to Marks much more, I might be coming to you for some brain work. LOL
Posted by: ebe | November 4, 2008 2:46 PM
I pray they remove Marx ASAP. Every time I heard or saw the show, I recognized gross errors in what she said and I'm not even that big of a sports fan. And her constant references to her being a former football player were out loud laughable. Women’s football is like staring at 22 holsteins in a meadow. She's a pathetic joke. Get her off the air right now. Please forward these to her program director.
If they have to have a female, Amber Theoharis has my vote. She's knowledgeable but not a know-it-all.
Posted by: Reggie | November 4, 2008 3:06 PM
I always thought it was incredibly lame how she -- and the station -- made a big deal of her "professional football career." As Bill Walton would say, she's horrrrible. She knows little about the subjects that she speaks on, she is not interesting or smart and her use of the English language is abusive and should be punishable.

Hey Anita,
Could I get a window seat at Ruth's Chris? Thanks, Anita, you are a wonderful new hostess here at Ruth's Chris.

Mr. David Sedegui (sp?) could you please get me a job at Babalu Grill. Yeah, I know exactly how C-Mac and Willis like their Cuban sandwiches.

I never heard A. Marks on the radio. Surfed past her on TV, but didn't linger. I'm just glad to know that Scott is on the air. He is (was) the BEST sportscaster on TV. The TV execs must be brain dead.
Posted by: Realist | November 4, 2008 7:41 PM
Marks is so unprofessional - she has no objectivity whatsoever. She is personal friends with several players and takes their opinions over everything. Garceau is a Baltimore treasure.
Posted by: Rages | November 5, 2008 5:41 AM
Ah, yes, body by Fisher, mind by Mattel. I thought we were due for an upgrade when Sage Steele left town but no such luck.
Posted by: buckeye beast | November 5, 2008 9:51 AM
Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought Ms. Marks was clueless; obviously that's not the case.
My favorite Marks moment was when she was on the air telling the listening audience that Marty Schottenheimer would be the next Ravens coach, not knowing that two other stations had been reporting for a half-hour that John Harbaugh had been hired. Then, she "broke the news" informing the listeners, "and remember you heard it here first!" After the third time she said this, I had to call the station to give them the 411.
Scott Garceau is a welcome and overdue change; a consummate pro and always prepared. Each time I watched the new show's simulcast on MASN, Ms. Marks seemed visibly upset if Mr. Garceau offered a differing opinion to her ill-informed one. I can't see this "partnership" lasting very long either.
Welcome back, Mr. Garceau.

Hey, we really need Amber Theoharis and Scott Garceau, 'cause she's hot and knows what she's talking about.

Anita is not all that bad. Jeremy in the booth is horrible. Zinno not bad. I think she and Garceau will be fine together. Sometimes I forget that every one who posts on message boards are perfect sons and daughters of Judge Judy.

It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's the Anoyying Marks Show. (NOT!)
First and foremost, here is the new old guy on the block, Scott Garceau!
She stutters, she doesn't listen, she can't pronounce Towson (toe-sun) and when you say first and foremost 20 times in an hour span, you should usually have a second point to discuss.
Additionally, why would you have a sound bite of Hines Ward on Baltimore radio???? She's a COMPLETE IDIOT!
