Baltimore sports radio changes

So now Baltimore has another sports radio station.

This morning, changes hit 105.7 FM, which is now calling itself "The Fan." According to a news release from the station, here is the schedule:

Ed Norris: 5:30-10:30 a.m.  (who had been on later in the day and doesn't do a sports show)

Mark Viviano and The Bulldog: 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Bruce Cunningham: 1-3 p.m.

Scott Garceau and Anita Marks 3-6 p.m.

Ravens player shows: 6-8 p.m.

Players with Ken Weinman: 8-11 p.m.

Some of this is programming moving over from ESPN 1300 (Viviano's show was still being simulcast there this morning). But 1300 will be going entirely to an ESPN Radio schedule:

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic: 6-10 a.m. (this is no change)

Colin Cowherd: 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Mike Tirico and Scott Van Pelt: 1-3 p.m. (no change)

Van Pelt: 3-4 p.m.

Sports Nation with John Seibel and Orestes Destrade: 4-7 p.m.

Gamenight: 7 p.m.-6 a.m.

Good to see Garceau is making a regular return to the airwaves after his retirement from Channel 2.

Still waiting to reach someone in management at CBS Radio Baltimore.

Amazing that anyone ever listens to play shows. They gotta rank as the most useless shows on radio/TV.
I guess Baltimore is slowly moving into the modern age with sporting stations. When I left several years ago, it was pretty pathetic. I was happy to find out that Phoenix had three stations with sports and you could receive them both day and night.
Isn't Ed Norris a retired cop or something? Five hours for him????

I'm glad Ed's still on, but I was already disappointed Brian Wilson got kicked off for Pentak, and now Kirk & Mark are gone along with Troy Johnson. Are they at least moving to a different station?

Is Bruce Cunningham still on WNST on Saturdays ?

Ray replies: I haven't had a chance to check yet, but it seems unlikely.

Bruce is the best out of all of them. Everyone loves his partner on TV. Amey is really fun to watch. I never thought they could replace Amber but they sure did. Love that girl. Thanks.

FINALLY! I've waited forever to get Viv and Bulldog out of the way so I can hear the national ESPN shows. I used to have to listen to D.C. stations. I couldn't take another minute of blathering about obscure high school football matchups. I had stopped listening. I have something to come back to now. Thanks.

I don't like the change for WHFS to all sports now. I liked the talk about every topic under the sun from before. I also was not impressed when I called the station last night during the Ken Weinman show and they hung up on me because I told them I didn't like the all sports version now. Way to bring in listeners, guys!

Good move for CBS. This town definitely needed an FM sports talk station as the AM band is just plain awful to listen to in terms of signal quality. If you want topical talk, get a satellite radio -- there's more to pick from there and the talent is certainly better, too (with Commissioner Norris being the only notable exception, IMHO :) ).

I really miss having Ed Norris on in the afternoon. While it is nice to hear him in the morning, I miss most of the show. I also liked having Anita Marks on 1300, when she was there I didn't have to listen to her.
Why is it that when radio stations make changes like this, it always seems to be under the cover of night?

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
