More on the new WVIE

Here's the scheduled weekday talk show lineup:

6-9 a.m.: Steve Czaban

9 a.m.-noon: Craig Shemon and James Washington

noon-3 p.m.: Jim Rome

3-6 p.m.: Jerry Coleman

6-7 p.m.: Local show TBA

7 p.m. on: Fox programming

Some notes:

*This initial lineup includes just four hours of local talk. WNST is all local from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. ESPN 1300 generally has 6 1/2 hours of local talk each weekday.

*1370 AM is 50,000 watts during the day, and its GM says the signal covers the entire Baltimore market, to the Eastern Shore and south of Washington into Virginia. At night, it powers down to 7,700, though that is still stronger than the signals for ESPN 1300 and WNST.

*GM Bob Pettit counts not being a flagship station for any of the major local teams as a plus: "It gives our hosts a little more freedom." Coleman echoes: "We're going to be a station that doesn't wave the pompoms. Now I won't have to worry about [team] management calling the station about something I said."

And I'm sure they mean that. But I'm also sure WVIE wouldn't refuse to carry Ravens or Orioles games, either.

Great news about The Czabe!

Mike and Mike are terrible.

ANYTHING is better than Anita Marks!!

I wish there was more local programming. Czaban is funny but anti-Baltimore. He is out of Washington, D.C. Rome is anti-Baltimore, let alone the fact I can't stand his style over substance.

I may tune in to check the local only on this one.

'The Czabe' is awful. Romey is hilarious but won't play in Charm City becuase his show is actually clever. Jerry Coleman? How does he have a job?

Its a shame that Tony Bruno left Fox long ago. It's great that there is more variety in the market as the local folks tend to be quite annoying and somewhat uninformed.

How can people be complaining about Czaban, but not about the current Anita Marks/the Bulldog? People in Baltimore have grown accustomed to horrible sports talk radio from hosts with absolutely no credentials. Czabe may be a giant blowhard, but he actually knows what he's talking about, unlike Anita Marks.

Jim Rome clever?
Sorry, his "smack" and "takes" get tired real fast. Like after one afternoon.

Nothing real exciting here, although I always thought Jerry Coleman did a pretty good job on WBAL. Hopefully before long they will add more local programming.

Does the change to Fox Sports mean that WBAL will no longer be carrying Fox Sports at night after Steve Davis' show or on weekends? Another interesting part of the chess game on local radio coverage!!

Ray replies: For now, no change. A little more on this soon.

Ray, this Is GREAT, but WVIE needs more local programming. 50,000 watts, If WNST had 50,000 watts WOW. Paul Mittermeier and Steve Stofberg would be great on WVIE. Jim Rome and Czaban hate B-more. 12pm-7pm should be local on WVIE. Also, CBS radio Is about to sell Its 5 radio stations, so who knows WJFK days could be numbered. New ownership who knows. We will see.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
