Comments

Interesting. Chastain's on soccer, Foudy isn't.

Andres Cantor isn't calling the games in English.

The unlistenable Siri Lindley isn't being let anywhere near a hockey pitch.

Where's John Tesh?

Good to see Lampley in there.

After watching a wee bit, I wonder if it isn't time to move on from Rowdy Gaines and Tim Dagget. These guys maybe have been around the block a few too many times. There is no new insight or fresh perspective here.

We all agree it is beyond the time to send Rowdy Gaines home. Basically an innacurate and childish announcer who thinks he is still competing. We enjoy the mute button every time he sends worthless criticism over the air.
Maybe the Chinese can deport him?

I found Andrea Joyce's interviews with both the whole team and particularly with Alicia Sacramone unprofessional and sickening. With Alicia, it was obvious Ms. Joyce wanted to badger her with negative questions until Alicia cried or broke down. Alicia held her composure but Ms. Joyce was unrelenting. Alicia will be competing again in these Games, but Ms. Joyce seemed hell bent in breaking whatever spirit and confidence Alicia had left.

This is NOT the kind of coverage I expect from NBC when interviewing an American athlete at the Olympics. I don't care if Ms. Joyce thought they should have won the gold. Her inane questions of "how did you feel..." showed a substandard level of reporting skill. Only once did Ms. Joyce actually congratulate the team for winning the silver.

Is this the best NBC can do?

I love Mary Carillo. Her pieces on prime time Olympic coverage are hilarious!!! Keep up the fun!

I disagree. Mary Carillo is annoying as ANYTHING and her fluff pieces are just a waste of time that could have been spent covering an event.

SHE even claimed that the Great Wall of China was visible from space during a fluff piece. Any competent journalist should have realized that the myth has been debunked. See NASA's Web site at

Some questions asked during the interview of Kobe Bryant by Chris Collinsworth during your coverage of the Olympic games this evening really disturbed me. One was, "Where does your patriotism come from inside you? Historically, what is it?" So Kobe gives the standard, "I love the USA" answer. (Which is a good thing and I agree) Then Collinsworth says ,"Is that a cool thing to say in this day and age? That you love your country?" So let me get this straight. Now African-American olympians have to pass the Rev. Wright test for NBC to the entire world? I mean really, I've seen so many Phelps interviews and no one has or would ask Michael Phelps to tell us where his patriotism comes from, historically, because it's a dumb question. No one cares to question the source of his pride in country. We all just know it's there. Nor would an interviewer ask Phelps or Liukin or Johnson a question like, is it cool to love your country. Yeah, and I got the way he TRIED to cover such an insulting question with his asinine, youth of today doesn't care about America angle. (The same youth fighting overseas right now) Thing is, Phelps, in the countless string of interviews and background pieces no one has asked the YOUNGER swimmer such an outrageous question or implied that youth don't think loving this country is cool. Hey Collinsworth, why don't you just assume that all of Americas olympians love America not just the white ones. That was way out of line and patently racist.

Cris Collinsworth should be ashamed of himself. In all reality, he was playing politics and attempting to justify his own anti-American feelings. There is no room for politics in the Olympics. I will never watch anything with that jerk as a comentator again.

Andrea Joyce's interview with Alicia Sacramone was extremely unprofessional and painful to watch. NBC should pull her from any further contact with any American athletes and put her on a plane home. I guess her desire was to make Alicia feel worse than she already did. Alicia was a big part of the women's team's winning the silver medal. Yet it seemed like all she really wanted to do was focus only on the negative. It really bothered me that NBC would let someone like her represent their network. Pull her credentials and send her home. Alicia should recieve a gold medal for having to stand next to this piece of trash and maintaining her composure. I'm very disapointed that NBC would think she is worthy of representing them. To quote a previous post by Katie: "Is this the best NBC can do?"

Chris Collinsworth should not use this opportunity to show his anti-American sentiments (Kobe Bryant Interview). I will never watch NBC Sports again or anything that has Collinsworth in it.

I have only vaguely ever heard the name of Cris Collingsworth before, but I can't believe the question he asked Kobe Bryant in his interview. I as an American and was very disturbed by it. I never thought of it as a racial thing. I wonder when it ever was not a cool thing to love your country. I love my country and fly my flag every day. What rock did this Cris climb out from under? I am a former teacher, grandmother of five and love my country and am not ashamed of it.

I can only surmise that Collingworth is putting to full use the education both NBC and law school has given him; i.e., full negative bent toward the country that has given him so much. To react with such obvious incredulity at Kobe's remarks clearly demonstrates his tour at the re-education camp at NBC.

Marcelo Balboa's analysis on the soccer games has been excellent. The soccer games have been a real treat to watch partly because of the fine commentary and analysis of the two in the booth.

why do the divers immediately take a shower and then go in to the hot tuub?

Lampley is a total yes man, I refuse to watch them. The coverage was too unbalanced. Nothing but beach volleyball and qualifying track. ... Women won the gold in soccer but you didn't hear that from NBC. So many talented athletes had their moment, but we were force fed stupid back stories of runners who didn't pan out. How hard is it to pass a baton?

/snooooooooozer

I disagree. I think Cris Collinsworth was asking the question to give Kobe Bryant the opportunity to express his patriotism, the chance to say to all his (young) fans who might think they should be cool like Kobe, that Kobe says it is cool to be patriotic. By acting as devil's advocate, Collinsworth gave Kobe a big opportunity to be a role model and show his patriotism. Patriotism did not seem to be as valued with the 2004 team that failed to win the expected gold medal. The question was to prove that this is a better team, better in intent, purer in the reasons they came.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
