Harold Reynolds, ESPN settle

Let's just not say they hugged it out.

The Associated Press reported yesterday that Harold Reynolds and ESPN have settled Reynolds' lawsuit over his firing as a baseball analyst two years ago. Reynolds, a former Oriole, was suing for $5 million after ESPN bounced him for what the network apparently believed was sexual harassment but what Reynolds contended was a "brief and innocuous" hug with a female intern.

Reynolds' statement: "My family and I are ecstatic. This was a matter of principle, and I stood on principle and never wavered. All of my goals were met, and now I look forward to concentrating on the game I love."

ESPN termed the settlement "economically compelling," and spokesman Mike Soltys said: "It was a fraction of his demands and substantially less than what it would have cost us to litigate the case. Our confidence in both the appropriateness of our action and our legal position never wavered."

Comments

If this wasn't scheduled to go to court till 2009, I guarantee ESPN was hiding something .. .or wait, no, they just are hypocrites.

See Mike Tirico, Dana Jacobson, Sean Salisbury, Rick Sutcliffe, Gary Miller ...

ESPN can say what they want but egg is on their face & they settled because they were wrong & knew Disney would not take to losing a court case & money which would have meant somebody's JOB. You aren't fooling the public. Harold beat you.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
