Credit where it's due, Earl Weaver and hoops news

I neglected to mention in the Phil Wood item in today's column that I learned of his Nats Xtra gig initially by reading it at the area broadcasting Web site dcrtv.com, which frequently breaks news regarding Washington and Baltimore radio and TV. And if I ever get ripped there for not knowing what I'm talking about, I likely deserve it.

Also at dcrtv.com, I saw a link to something that has been out there for a long time but was new to me. It was an audio clip -- this one posted at YouTube -- of Earl Weaver doing a hilariously obscene "Manager's Corner" radio spot with then-Orioles voice Tom Marr. I checked with Marr, a longtime talk host on WCBM, who said the two decided to record it that way on a lark -- to amuse the people back at the station -- in Seattle in 1982. Somehow, the tape got out and "now it's around the world," Marr said.

Along with the radio bit at YouTube, there is another obscenely funny clip of Weaver arguing with an umpire, featuring the unedited audio. The best part is when Weaver tells the ump Weaver will end up in the Hall of Fame and the ump replies, "What for? F------ up the World Series?"

I'll provide no direct link because of the strong language, but these are easily found by going to YouTube and searching "Earl Weaver."

OK, this isn't really big basketball news, except to me. I'm not being any more self-indulgent than usual to mention today I gathered a small group of colleagues and former colleagues for a return to our weekly pickup game -- the first since I nearly died from a heart problem in August. I figure no one can complain now when I shoot too much. You want me to pass? Hey, man, I almost died!

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
