Fox's Troy Aikman had this take on the Giants' regular-season-ending loss to the Patriots (conference call excerpt provided by Fox): “In a strange way, the Giants have the Patriots to thank for the reason they are in the Super Bowl. I do believe the Giants got better after that game. If they had not been playing the New England Patriots in the final game of the season in all likelihood a number of their starters wouldn’t have been playing that game. They had not been playing great football at least offensively going in to the last game of the season. The fact that they were playing New England and that New England was going for an undefeated season, the Giants wanted to keep that from happening, I think that made them a better football team and ultimately landed them here in Super Bowl XLII.”

It's almost Dickie V time again. Dick Vitale, who has been recovering from vocal cord surgery, returns Wednesday on ESPN's Duke-North Carolina game. Doctors have advised him not to say Mike Krzyzewski's full name until he gets a bit stronger.

ESPN's "The Greatest Highlight with Chris Berman," a countdown of, well, you can figure it out, begins next Sunday. It was probably too late, so the clip that made the Internet rounds this week showing Berman profanely blowing up on the set won't make the cut.
