UM, not MU

It's a local telecast, so you would expect the analyst on today's Maryland-American basketball game to know the name of the university in College Park. But during the Comcast SportsNet telecast, Ron Thompson at least twice referred to "Maryland University."

That guy was pretty weak. At the end, he said Jeff Jones was "the second-time, all-time leading winning percentage" coach at AU, or something like that.

Someone may have been saying it in his earpiece and he couldn't repeat it correctly. Obviously, he meant Jones was No. 2 all-time in winning percentage at AU. Oddly, the AU athletic department Web site doesn't even mention that about Jones.

Thompson kind of had Anita Marks Disease throughout the game. Wellll ... HE probably knew what he meant.

That's a pretty egregious error for anyone to make. I don't think you have to be a native to Maryland to know that it's "University of Maryland," not "Maryland University." That is just as bad as someone calling "Florida State University" the "University of Florida State."

As a lifetime Maryland fan, I don't recognize this team. As bad as Gary's first years here.

What a waste the national championship was. What a waste the Comcastle is. What a waste.

Time for a coach who's willing to recruit.

I gave Gary a five-year free pass for the championship. More even for what he came into. But enough if enough. There is no real hope of anything chaning.

I like Mosely, but to take a JUCO with attitude problems is ridiculous.

We haven't had a go-to guy since Dixon, Baxter, and Wilcox left.

Dixon and Wilcox were the last first-round picks.

Enough is enough.

The illustrious U of Maryland, under the most capable hand of their courageous leader Gary Williams, succumbed to the Fightin' Eagles of American U., a team that has lost in the past month to national powers Morgan State, Loyola, UMBC and Fairfield.
I am sure this is only a temporary situation as team leader and senior James Gist, who had an exemplary game with 4 points and 3 rebounds, against the formidable AU frontline, whose tallest player is 6-7.
Have a happy holiday and new year, Gary and the boys!!!
Oh, by the way, it has been 82 years since AU defeated Maryland. Don't think it will take another 82, do you?

Other than the MU stuff, RT was actually pretty good. He goes into a lot more strategy than other color guys do. This is his first time doing this, and I think he was just amalgomating "American University" with Maryland in haste. I don't think he's confused about the name of the school. He's probably lived in Maryland most of his life.

About Ray Frager
Ray Frager joined The Baltimore Sun’s sports department in 1985 and has been an assistant sports editor for more than 15 years. This is his second stint writing a sports media column for The Baltimore Sun. Most sequels aren't as good as the original, but then, the original wasn't all that great either.

Frager, born in 1957, grew up in northern Delaware (graduating from a high school that since has shut down) and received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Rider College in Lawrenceville, N.J. He worked as a reporter and copy editor at The Trenton Times and The Dallas Morning News before coming to Baltimore.

Surprisingly, if you look at his accompanying photo, Frager is married and has a son and daughter. He enjoys playing basketball and has organized pickup games among members of The Baltimore Sun staff for many years, which means they don't get too mad at him for shooting way too much.

He has a good beat and is easy to dance to. I'd give him an 85.
