U.S. takes fourth straight title at U-19 world championships

Varsity-US-lacrosse.jpg

Varsity-covie-stanwick.jpg
The United States used a five-goal second half run to come from behind and beat Australia, 14-11, for its fourth straight Under-19 women's lacrosse world championship today in Hanover, Germany.

Covie Stanwick (Notre Dame Prep) and Cortney Fortunato each scored twice and Jen Cook (McDonogh) added a free-position shot with about 10 minutes left to polish off the five-goal run and give the U.S. a 12-8 lead.

Stanwick and Fortunato finished with three goals each and goalie Kelsey Duryea made some terrific saves in leading the U.S. to its fourth straight win over Australia in the title game. The U.S. (8-0) has lost only one game in the five U-19 world championship tournaments -- to Australia in the final at the inaugural event in 1995 in Haverford, Pa.

Coach Krystin Porcella's U.S. team defeated Australia, 20-7, in pool play Tuesday, but the Aussies got the jump on the U.S Saturday scoring the first goal and taking a 6-3 lead on the third of Nelly Mollison's five goals. (Nelly is the cousin of Maryland star Sarah Mollison.) The Aussies controlled 16 of 27 draws in the game.

"Australia came out and wanted it," Porcella said via email. "They were winning every draw and grounds balls. They moved some players around. No. 13 (Darcy Justice Allen) was playing center and was drawing a lot to herself. No. 3 (Rebecca Lane) won a lot of long draws. In our first meeting, we were more successful in those two areas from the start."

U.S. advances to U-19 championship game

The United States continues to roll through the Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Women's World Championships, running up a 9-0 lead to fuel a 19-5 semifinal victory over England in Hanover, Germany on Friday.

The three-time defending champion U.S. is 7-0 at the tournament and will meet Australia, a 14-10 winner over Canada in the other semifinal, for the championship Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time. The United States and Australia have met in every championship game in the history of the Under-19 championships. The U.S. won the last three titles after falling to Australia in the inaugural U-19 championship in Haverford, Pa. in 1995.

U.S. coach Krystin Porcella noted the play of attacker Erin McMunn (Winters Mill), midfielder Dani Lazo (St. Mary's) and defender Caleigh Sindall (Good Counsel) in the semifinal win. McMunn had two goals and three assists as well as three draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Lazo had two goals, two draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Sindall had six caused turnovers, one ground ball and one draw control.

"England is fast and athletic and their players have strong moves to goal," Porcella said via email. "We were able to win 20 of the 26 draw controls. Our defenders, Sindall and Alyssa Blevins (C. Milton Wright), played solid one-v-one. McMunn ran a calculated attack that used up a good amount of time per possession, since England has a very good fast break and that is how they score most of their goals."

Jen Cook (McDonogh) had one goal and Covie Stanwick (Notre Dame Prep) contributed one assist as 12 Americans had at least one point. Cortney Fortunato, from New York, matched McMunn's five points with five goals while starting goalie Kelsey Duryea, from Massachusetts, was named Player of the Game.

McMunn (13 goals, 11 assists), Cook (10 goals, 6 assists) and Stanwick (5 goals, 11 assists) rank among the top five in American scoring leaders while Fortunato leads the team with 22 goals and 8 assists.

Q&A with U.S. Under-19 women's lacrosse coach Krystin Porcella

Varsity-Krystin-Porcella.jpg

Coach Krystin Porcella leads her U.S. under-19 women's lacrosse team through a recent practice at Cedar Lane Park. (Baltimore Sun photo by Lloyd Fox)

Krystin Porcella enjoyed being an assistant coach for the United States Under-19 women’s lacrosse team at the 2007 world championships so much that she jumped at the chance to take over the program.

Starting Thursday, Porcella will guide the U.S. in search of its fourth straight gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s Under-19 World Championship in Hanover, Germany. The John Carroll girls coach follows Bryn Mawr coach Wendy Kridel, who stepped down as head coach after three straight gold medals.

Porcella, 35, played defense for John Carroll and Loyola and spent two years on the U.S. Developmental Team from 1996-98. Earlier this year, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Greater Baltimore Chapter of US Lacrosse. She led John Carroll to back-to-back IAAM A Conference titles in 2007 and 2008 and was the All-Metro Coach of the Year in 2008.

Before heading to Germany, Porcella shared some thoughts about the Under-19 coaching experience.

No. 1 McDonogh vs. No. 2 NDP girls lax postponed

The Thursday showdown between No. 1 McDonogh and No. 2 Notre Dame Prep has been postponed until Friday.

Lots of rain Wednesday night in Owings Mills made the Eagles' low-lying field too wet to play on, but the rematch of last year's IAAM A Conference final will be played there at 4 p.m. Friday.

Both teams opened their seasons with wins over A Conference foes on Tuesday -- McDonogh, 16-14 over Roland Park, and NDP, 18-6 over Mount de Sales.

Last season, the Eagles defeated the Blazers, 17-8, for their second straight A Conference title and a 20-0 finish. They became only the second team in A Conference history to win back-to-back titles and also to finished undefeated. John Carroll won in 2007 and 2008 and went 18-0 in 2008.

Four locals named to national U19 women's lax team

Notre Dame Prep's Covie Stanwick, McDonogh's Jen Cook, C. Milton Wright's Alyssa Blevins and Winters Mill's Erin McMunn were named to the final United States Under-19 women's lacrosse team that will compete for the World Championship this summer in Germany.

Coaches whittled the team from 24 to 18 players after games last weekend in Florida. Coach Krystin Porcella, also the coach at John Carroll, said it came down to the wire for every girl on the team.

Stanwick, an All-Metro attacker, is the fourth member of her family to be named to a U.S. national team. Her oldest sister Sheehan played on the U.S. elite national team, while Coco Stanwick captained the gold-medal winning Under-19 team in 2003. Both women were All-Metro attackers at Notre Dame Prep and played at Georgetown. Brother Steele, a Virginia junior and The Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year as a junior, was named to the Under-19 men's team in 2008 but was injured and unable to play.

The team includes six players from Maryland with Good Counsel's Caileigh Sindall and Brigid Smith also making the cut. New York also has six players.

The United States women's Under-19 team has won the last three world championships and has won all 20 games since falling to Australia in the 1995 final.

The team will play in the US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament May 28 and 29 at Stony Brook and will defend its title at the Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 World Championship Aug. 3 to 14 in Hannover, Germany.

Former Viking named Mount Hebron girls lax coach

Trish (Dewart) Sullivan will return to her alma mater as the new Mount Hebron girls lacrosse coach this spring, athletic director Jeannie Prevosto announced Tuesday.

Sullivan, a two-time All-Howard County defender who played on three state champion Vikings teams in the late 1990's, has coached Reservoir's girls lacrosse team for the past four years, but she couldn't resist the draw of her alma mater. She takes over for Brooke Kuhl-McClelland, who resigned after last spring and later moved on to St. Paul's.

"I'm thrilled," Sullivan, a 1998 Mount Hebron graduate, said. "To me it's like going back home. I feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm at a place in my career where I'm really ready for it. I'm really ready to get back to the program that I feel molded me as a player and certainly as a coach. I'm really entering it with a lot of enthusiasm. I'm excited to be back in the community I was brought up in myself."

Sullivan, 30, is the fourth coach in the storied history of a Vikings girls lacrosse program that has won a record 15 state championships -- including 11 in a row between 1997 and 2007 -- and is one of the most successful programs in the nation. Kuhl-McClelland guided the Vikings to six state titles and five national No. 1 rankings in her nine years.

Since it's first season in 1983, the program has gone 373-35-1 under the guidance of P.J. Kesmodel (now coaching at Cape Henlopen, Del.), Chris Robinson (now at McDonogh) and Kuhl-McClelland.

Expectations will be high.

"I'm no stranger to that," Sullivan said. "I feel like that's how I was bred. I have high expectations for myself and the program."

Sullivan, who played college lacrosse at Ohio State, is a guidance counselor at Reservoir. Her husband Josh Sullivan is the girls varsity lacrosse coach at Reservoir.

She said it won't be easy to leave the Reservoir team behind, but she said she believes the players understand why she took the Hebron job.

"They understand this would have been a regret for me if I didn't do it," Sullivan said. "I tell them not to leave any regrets on the field and I've got to take my own advice in life. I felt a deep connection there and I felt I had to be there. I knew that I wanted to be at Hebron one day, but I didn't know one day would be as soon as it is."

Kuhl-McClelland takes over St. Paul's girls lacrosse

Former Mount Hebron girls lacrosse coach Brooke Kuhl-McClelland has taken over at St. Paul's, aiming to rejuvenate a program that has had five coaches in 10 years and finished 9-9 last season.

Kuhl-McClelland, who had a 152-15 record with the Vikings, guided them to six state championships and five national No. 1 rankings in nine years. She left after last season for a variety of reasons.

"When I left Hebron, it wasn't with the intention to get out of coaching. It was just for a change," said Kuhl-McClelland, who is a dance teacher at Hammond and was the county's Teacher of the Year in 2006-07.

When Kuhl-McClelland heard that Gators coach Monica Yeakel had resigned, she called about the position immediately. She was officially hired last week, bringing along her coaching staff from Mount Hebron -- husband Tommy McClelland and Kelly Murphy.

"It is a whole new world, but it's an exciting one. I loved every minute that I had at Hebron. There were always some challenges there as far as the pressure. That's what people are saying, 'You jumped right out of the frying pan back into the fire.' I didn't want to take a program that was in disarray. We had a few other opportunities and offers ... but I'm not sure at this point in my life, I'm ready to start a new program. I wanted something that was fairly established."

The Gators won A Conference titles in 2004 and 2006, but have been slightly off the pace ever since.

St. Paul's athletic director Jim Stromberg said Kuhl-McClelland and her coaching staff have the background to boost the Gators back toward the top.

"They've already done it and they know how to do it," Stromberg said. "We're really fortunate to have them coming here and I think our kids and our families will figure that out early. One thing about her that we like is she loves a challenge and I don't think you're going to be more challenged than being in this league."

Over the years, the Vikings have played Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference teams, but seeing that kind of competition every day will be a new challenge for Kuhl-McClelland, named the Coach of the Decade earlier this year by TopoftheCircle.com.

"At Mount Hebron we were lucky enough to play two IAAM teams in a season and now you're facing an entire league's worth of that. It is a huge challenge and, of course, I still subscribe to the fact that lacrosse is evolving and getting bigger, faster, stronger girls every single year, so the IAAM is getting better and better. I'm excited about the challenge of getting that kind of competition on a daily basis."

She also will square off for the first time against McDonogh coach Chris Robinson, whose IAAM championship team went undefeated and No. 1 in the spring. Kuhl-MClelland was Robinson's assistant at Mount Hebron and she assumed the head coaching spot in 2002 the year after he left. They made a deal at the time that their teams would never play an official game.

"Facing Chris will be very difficult. We've never really faced off against each other in a real
competition. We've only done it as a scrimmage. In the early years, Mount Hebron would beat McDonogh. In the later years, we could barely stay with McDonogh. It's going to be interesting."

Another draw for McClelland is that the St. Paul's campus is just a seven-minute drive from her home. Chances are she will spend that extra time on lacrosse.

Five locals lead U-19 women's team selections

Five Baltimore area high school players were among 24 women chosen to the United States training team for the 2011 Federation of International Lacrosse Under-19 Women’s World Championships in Hannover, Germany next August.

Notre Dame Prep’s Covie Stanwick, McDonogh’s Jen Cook, C. Milton Wright’s Alyssa Blevins, St. Mary’s Dani Lazo and Winters Mill’s Erin McMunn were named to the team, which will be whittled down to 18 next spring. More than 165 girls from 25 states tried out before the training team selections were finalized Wednesday morning by head coach Krystin Porcella, also head coach at John Carroll.

“I was shocked at first,” McMunn said of seeing her number on the final roster Wednesday morning. “I thought I was going to get cut for sure someplace along the line. It was so cool to see your number, because so many incredible girls showed up and everyone worked so hard. I’m just so excited.”

Tryouts were conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at UMBC with most girls cut by 8 a.m. Wednesday and the training team trimmed to 24 about three hours later. Monday and Tuesday’s sessions amounted to about seven or eight hours of playing time each, said Cook.

“It was the toughest two and a half days I’ve had mentally and physically,” she said. “It was really tiring playing that much lacrosse every day for two or three straight. I was really sore and it was tough mentally with all the selectors watching. You always have to be on your game. It was really difficult but at the same time, it was a really good experience to get through something as tough as that.”

Stanwick, a first-team All-Metro selection last spring, said she gets goose bumps at the thought of playing in the world championships.

“Today when we had a team meeting, just thinking about it gives you a chill, thinking about how cool it would be to put on a uniform that says USA across your chest. It would be so cool to be able to represent your county,” said Stanwick, whose sister Coco played on the 2003 world champion Under-19 team and whose brother Steele made the boys 2008 team but could not play after an injury.

Stanwick said ever since watching her sister play, it has been her goal to make the U-19 team.

While Stanwick and Cook are close friends -- despite Cook's McDonogh team winning the IAAM A Conference championship for the second straight year over Stanwick's NDP team -- McMunn said she didn't know anyone on the team really well although she has played with or against some of the players. She expects that to change pretty quickly.

Although the team won't get together again until the weekend of October 9-10 at the US Lacrosse Stars and Stripes Festival in Boston, Facebook and text messaging likely will facilitate fast friendships.

"You really have to get to know everybody on the team well if you're going to play well as a unit and be successful and everyone I've met there seems really nice. I'm really excited to get to know everybody," said McMunn, who helped Winters Mill to the state Class 2A-1A title last spring.

"No matter what -- if I get cut or if I make it to Germany -- I think it's just such a great experience," Stanwick said. "Even the tryouts, meeting people who are coming from Texas and California, seeing how the game is spreading. No matter what, I just think it will be cool to get to know these girls. These are the top 24 girls in the nation so throughout college you're going to see them again."

The United States women’s U-19 team has a lot to live up to when it heads to Germany next summer. The US won its third straight world title in Canada in 2007. Their only loss was in the inaugural event in which they fell to Australia in 1995.

Spalding hires boys, girls lacrosse coaches

Archbishop Spalding has hired two head varsity lacrosse coaches, selecting Ricky Schwartzberg as the new boys coach, while Donald Restly takes over the girls program.

Schwartzberg served as an assistant coach under previous coach Zach Burke, who guided the Cavaliers to two Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoff appearances in his three years at the helm.

Century's girls lax coach Pentz stepping down

Century girls lacrosse coach Rose Pentz has decided to step down as the Knights' coach after this season, so she can watch her daughter Kaitlin play college lacrosse next spring.

The only coach the Knights' program has had in its eight years as a varsity program, Pentz has a 125-13 career record and has guided Century to four state championships. She was The Baltimore Sun's Carroll County Coach of the Year every year between 2003 and 2007.

She said she didn't think she could juggle the full demands of coaching with traveling to watch Kaitlin, the Knights' goalie, who is headed for Robert Morris.

"I want to be able to devote the time now to family," Pentz said Tuesday. "If I can't give 110 percent to it, it would be better for the program if someone else came in and took over. I don't think it would be fair to the program to stay when I couldn't do that. I want to be able to have the freedom to go and watch her play and to support her during the spring season."

Pentz said that, for the last three years, she has been able to go to all of her son Ryan's football games at Wagner, but that was easier to do in the fall when she was not coaching. With Kaitlin going to Robert Morris, which is near Pittsburgh, Pentz will be traveling a lot.

"Despite the fact that some college games are on weekends, coaching lacrosse is year around and during the season, there's so much weekend work. There's so much more behind the scenes not just what's out on the field and I can't give the time to it if I'm traveling," Pentz said.

This season, the Knights are 14-2 and ranked No. 14. They are the only defending state champion left in the girls lacrosse brackets after South River edged Severna Park in the Class 4A-3A East region semifinal and Hereford upset Fallston in the Class 3A-2A North semifinal on Monday. The Knights travel to Middletown on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for the regional championship.

Pentz will remain a support counselor and crisis intervention specialist at Century, where her husband Randy Pentz is the athletic director.

Assistant coach Becky Trumbo, a physical education teacher at Century and a former Liberty and Towson University lacrosse standout, is interested in the head-coaching position, Pentz said, but her successor will not be appointed until fall.

17 local girls named Under Armour lax All-Americans

The rosters for the fifth annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic were announced Monday and 17 Baltimore-area girls were honored.

Sixteen of the girls will play on the South team in the Classic, July 3 at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University. One, St. Mary's goalie Lyndsey Munoz, will play for the North.

Munoz ended up on the North team, because the South had too many good goalies, according to Ryan Heacock, the event director for the Classic.

"With the goalies, we take the four best goalies. Three of the best four goalies were from the Maryland-Virginia area, so the way of thinking is one girl's going to Stanford, so we decided to put her on the North team," Heacock said.

The rosters, made up of all seniors, were selected by the Inside Lacrosse staff, Heacock said.

Munoz will be familiar with a lot of the players she will face on the North squad, because she has played against most of them, including three girls from the No. 1 McDonogh team, which went 20-0 and won its second straight IAAM A Conference title.

McDonogh was the only girls team with three players selected -- attacker Hannah Franklin, midfielder Margaret Smith and defender Taylor Virden. Eagles coach Chris Robinson will coach the South team.

The other local players selected:

Barb Black, St. Paul's, goalie
Liza Blue, Garrison Forest, midfield
MacKenzie Cyr, Winters Mill, attack
Taylor George, Broadneck, midfield
Natalie Glanell, South River, defense
Beth Glaros, Wilde Lake, midfield
Brooke Griffin, South River, midfield
Paige Hanson, Bryn Mawr, attack
Meghan Helm, Notre Dame Prep, defense
Sarah Lloyd, Severna Park, midfield
Adrienne Tarver, Park, midfield
Courtney Tomchik, Broadneck, midfield
Amalie Trentzsch, Winters Mill, midfield

Girls lax teams move to turf for a rainy day

Several girls lacrosse teams have moved their games to artificial turf fields today for a better chance to get their regional semifinals in despite the predicted rainy weather.

C. Milton Wright will play Catonsville at Harford Community College's turf field. The game has been moved to 7 p.m. rather than the original 6 p.m. start.

Winters Mill coach Courtney Vaughn has played several of her games at Garrison Forest, because of nasty weather through the season. Tonight the Falcons will play Liberty in a big Carroll County showdown at Garrison in Owings Mills at 5 p.m.

McDonogh girls lax looks to cap perfect season

As difficult as it is to win the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference lacrosse title, it’s even tougher to run the table in arguably the strongest girls lacrosse league in the country.

No. 1 McDonogh has a chance to do that for a second straight year as the Eagles look to defend their 2009 A Conference crown. Thursday’s 16-8 victory over No. 11 Liberty, paced by five points each from Taylor Cummings and Corinne Etchison, boosted the Eagles record to 17-0.

The Eagles have a bye in today’s first round of the A Conference tournament and will begin playoff action at home Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of today’s game between Maryvale and St. Paul’s.

What’s driving McDonogh’s success? Certainly skill and speed and all the other assets you would expect to see on the field, but also depth that far surpasses opponents. And it doesn’t hurt to have 16 seniors.

“It starts with the Class of 2010, the senior class,” coach Chris Robinson said. “We’ve got 16 seniors, 14 of which came through our middle school, so they’ve been together a long time and they’ve really been a huge building block in our program. Even from a couple years ago when we really started to have some success, they were contributors as freshmen and sophomores.

“Their veteran experience really helped out this year, because we were the target of everybody from the beginning of the season on. Everybody brought their best against us and these guys were able to weather the storm and stay focused despite all the pressure of being No. 1 all year.”

A senior class led by All-Metro players Margaret Smith and Taylor Virden was buoyed by some exceptional underclassmen, including sophomores Cummings, Etchison and goalie Katie Ferraro. The Eagles have shown the consistency that put them in the championship game the last two years.

Not that the Eagles weren’t challenged this season. No. 3 Notre Dame Prep and No. 10 St. Mary’s pushed them to within one goal and the Eagles only beat No. 4 John Carroll by two.

“We went through a two-week stretch where it was tough, because we blew out so many teams early in the season and we hit a stretch of good competition with NDP, John Carroll and St. Mary’s,” Robinson said. “To get the momentum back that we had early in the season was tough, but we’re peaking right now at the right time at the playoffs. We have that same type of intensity and focus we had early in the season.”

This will be the 11th IAAM title contested and through the first 10 years, only one team has won with an overall unbeaten record – John Carroll, 18-0 in 2008. Last season, the Eagles came close but dropped one game to Canandaigua, N.Y. and finished 19-1. Since that loss last April, McDonogh is 29-1.

The future doesn't look too bad either considering the Eagles' junior varsity and freshman-sophomore teams finished their seasons undefeated.

This year’s IAAM championship game will be held at Gerstell Academy in Finksburg on May 15 at 3 p.m.

NDP wins one for Yeardley Love

ndp-lacrosse.jpg

In Alexandria, Va. Tuesday, the Notre Dame Prep lacrosse team won its final regular-season game, against one of its toughest out-of-conference rivals, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School. The players dedicated the game to Yeardley Love, wearing Virginia orange bows in their hair and sporting Love's Cavaliers' jersey number, according to coach Mary Bartel.

"They had a piece of black mourning tape around their sticks and they had the No. 1 on their arms or legs somewhere ... in eye black," Bartel said. "(At the start of the game,) we prayed as we always do, and then in the first-string huddle, Covie [Stanwick] said, 'Come on you all. This one's for Yeards.'"

As they left Alexandria, Bartel said, coach Kathy Jenkins’ Saints presented the Blazers with goodie bags for the ride home.

“How wonderful is this? It was what they could do to console us and it worked. It was awesome, one of those girlie kind of community things,” said Bartel, whose No. 3-ranked Blazers open play in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference tournament on Tuesday.

McDonogh-Bryn Mawr girls lax now April 26

The first test for McDonogh's No.1 girls lacrosse team against a Top 10 challenger has been postponed because McDonogh's field is too muddy to play on after so much rain Thursday night and Friday morning.

The Eagles, last season's IAAM A Conference champs, were to host No. 7 Bryn Mawr on Friday afternoon. The game will be made up on April 26.

Vikings' Kuhl-McClelland named 'Coach of the Decade'

Mount Hebron's Brooke Kuhl-McClelland has been named the girls lacrosse Coach of the Decade by TopOfTheCircle.com, a Web site devoted to field hockey and women's lacrosse.

In eight seasons with the Vikings, Kuhl-McClelland amassed a 140-10 record and led her team to six state championships. The Baltimore Sun's 2006 All-Metro Coach of the Year won her first 98 games as a head coach.

She also guided the Vikings to 103 straight wins between May 2001 and April 2007, tying the record set by Loch Raven in 1982.

Locals shine on CAA 25th anniversary women's lax team

When the Colonial Athletic Association announced its Silver Anniversary women's lacrosse team earlier this week, there were sure to be some Baltimoreans on it. Sure enough, almost half the team members played their high school ball right here.

A dozen of the 25 players selected hail from Baltimore-area high schools: Kelly Berger (Hammond, James Madison), Tricia Dabrowski (Dulaney, Loyola), Gail Decker (Mount de Sales, James Madison), Meg Dentler (Arundel, George Mason), Bridget Eder (Mount de Sales, Hofstra), Suzanne Eyler (North Harford, Loyola), Jess Marion (South River, James Madison), Michelle Meyer (Broadneck, Loyola), Megan Riley (South River, James Madison), Stephanie Roberts (Severna Park, Loyola) and Becky Trumbo (Liberty, Towson).

OK, so that's only 11. But we'll include Towson senior Hillary Fratzke, who played high school ball just a tad to the east at Queen Anne's and who lives on the Eastern Shore. Fratzke is the only active player on the team.

All of these women were All-Americans. Berger, Decker, Dentler, Fratzke, Marion, Meyer and Riley were CAA Players of the Year.

Broadneck’s Tomchik commits to Penn

In deciding where to play college lacrosse, Broadneck senior Courtney Tomchik opted for a path few Baltimore-area girls have chosen. She verbally committed to the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn has ranked among NCAA Division I’s most successful programs in the past few years, reaching three straight final fours, but it hasn’t drawn a lot of recruits from this area. The Quakers’ roster for next spring includes just two Baltimore-area players: senior Barb Seamon (Roland Park) and sophomore Jen Hardesty (Westminster).

Tomchik is thrilled to follow them.

“When I went up there, I was talking to a few of the girls, and one of the girls, Katie Mazer – she just graduated -- she was excited to hear that I was from the Annapolis or Baltimore area,” said Tomchik, of the Bryn Mawr graduate. “She was excited that I was from her hometown, sort of, because they don’t have a lot girls from this area. They get a lot of girls from Philly and New York it seems like. I thought about that, because a lot girls around here look at the ACC schools. I don’t know anyone who’s going to Penn for lacrosse.”

Named one of Lacrosse Magazine's top rising seniors nationwide, Tomchik narrowed her college choices to Penn and Duke from a list that included Georgetown, Yale, North Carolina and Vanderbilt.

But lacrosse wasn’t the most important factor in Tomchik’s decision to attend Penn. She has applied to the university’s prestigious Wharton school of business. With a 4.26 weighted grade-point average, she ranks in the Top 20 in her Bruins class of 530 students.

“Going to an Ivy League school will be rewarding and I’ll graduate with an excellent education,” said Tomchik. “Wharton is the No. 1 business school in the world and I hope to get a degree in marketing or communications, because I’m interested in advertising and how businesses market themselves.”

In the meantime, Tomchik, an All-Anne Arundel County lacrosse player, should be one of the key contributors on the Bruins field hockey team this fall.
