Mount St. Joseph rising senior Jalen Robinson scored late in the first half Wednesday to help the U.S. under-18 men's national soccer team to a 1-1 tie against rival Mexico in the second group game of the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

Robinson’s goal came with just seconds remaining in the half, when he drove a low shot from about eight yards away off Victor Pineda’s corner kick.

The U.S. earned four points in two group games and will face Georgia for third-place in the six-team tournament. Denmark and Northern Ireland will play for the championship.

Robinson, a three-year starter for the Gaels and a 2010 first-team All-Metro selection by The Baltimore Sun, also entered as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Israel on Monday.

He has already signed to play at Wake Forest.

Reservoir looks for soccer sweep

The No. 4 Resevoir girls team did its part Thursday night, coming away with a thrilling 1-0 win over Huntingtown to capture its first Class 3A state championship. Today, it's the boys' turn.

The No. 3 Gators will take on Northern-Calvert in a bid to bring home their first title and complete a soccer sweep for the Howard County school. Game time at UMBC is set for 5 p.m.

Both Reservoir teams had incredible playoff journeys.

The girls pitched four straight shutouts to close things out, including a 1-0 win over defending champ Tuscarora that took the sting out of last year's 3-2 loss to the Titans in the championship game.

They used last year's championship game experience this time around, taking charge in the first half last night, getting a goal from senior midfielder Katlyn Axenfeld and then proving sturdy on defense in a hectic final 10 minutes with the Hurricanes desperate.

Tonight, the boys won't have the luxury of having played in a state title game before, but they have shown themselves plenty resilient. They knocked off then-No.1 Wilde Lake in the semifinal round of the region playoffs. Then visited perennial state power River Hill and advanced with better aim on penalty kicks to claim their first region title.

Having been tested game after game throughout the season in Howard County, the Gators overwhelmed Linganore in the state semifinals for a comfortable 3-0 win.

Going into tonight's state final against Northern, which also will be making its first state title game, the Gators would be wise to get some tips from the state champions Reservoir girls, who made sure to stay focused, played their game and didn't get caught up in the moment.

MIAA soccer semifinals set to kick off

Another topsy-turvy Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference soccer season is down to four teams. Here’s a rundown of what should be two competitive semifinals Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

No. 14 Loyola (9-8-1) at No. 2 Gilman (15-2-3)

The Dons offense exploded for three first-half goals against No. 8 Calvert Hall in the quarterfinals and will look to keep their season rolling against the Greyhounds’ stingy defense. Gilman earned the top seed and a first-round bye in the tournament by winning six of its last seven regular-season games. The Greyhounds also swept Loyola during the regular season. However, Loyola appears to have found its scoring touch and is led by forward Jamie Dubyoski, who had two goals against the Cardinals. Gilman has one of the top goalies in the area in Andrew Harris and is searching for its first conference crown since sharing the title with Archbishop Curley in 1995. Loyola last shared a title with Mount St. Joseph in 2005.

No. 6 McDonogh (17-5-1) at No. 7 Mount St. Joseph (13-3-2)

This semifinal is a rematch of last season’s title game won by the Gaels in a shootout, ending the Eagles two-year reign as champions. The Eagles, however, had their revenge by sweeping the regular-season series by a 6-0 margin. The Gaels earned a bye and the second seed by going unbeaten in their final six games. Mount St. Joseph is led by Jalen Robinson, a national team player who has battled injuries this season. Joey Isaja is also a top playmaker for the Gaels. McDonogh has one of the most talented rosters in the state, but struggled down the stretch, going 1-4-1 to end the regular season. The Eagles bounced back in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Curley on a goal by Kyle DeVinney in the 12th minute. The Gaels and Eagles have developed one of the best soccer rivalries in the state and the semifinal should be a creative, entertaining match.

Tune leads Calvert Hall into quarterfinals

Most of the eighth-ranked Calvert Hall soccer team’s scoring punch this season has come from a player who was catching passes for the varsity football team last year.

Senior John Tune leads the team with 12 goals and he will be closely watched in Tuesday’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference quarterfinal against Loyola. The Cardinals have already beaten the Dons twice this season, storming back from a three-goal deficit in the teams’ first meeting with the help of Tune’s two goals. For Tune, a victory would be further justification for returning to Calvert Hall’s storied soccer program.

“I played soccer since I was four,” Tune said. “I’ve always liked to try new things. I always loved soccer. But my brother [Robbie] played football and I got to see how much fun they had and all the people in the stands. It was kind of random. I just decided to switch over and give it a try. I had a great time. I’d like to thank Coach [Andy] Moore for letting me come back to the program.”

Tune’s versatility doesn’t stop at Calvert Hall’s Paul Angelo Russo Stadium. He participates in Calvert Hall’s Peer Education program, serving as a mentor to freshmen, plays in the school’s Liturgy band and is active with the drama department.

For now, however, the focus is entirely on the Dons, who will travel to Calvert Hall for a 6:30 p.m. game under the lights with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Gilman. The other semifinal has Archbishop Curley traveling to McDonogh with the winner taking on Mount St. Joseph.

The semifinals are Thursday at the higher seeds and the finals are Sunday at Archbishop Spalding.

“This is our third night game, and it’s going to be a huge crowd,” Tune said. “We’re hoping to make it all the way to Sunday.”

Moore said Tune’s return has been a spark for the program. He said opponents must constantly account for Tune, which has helped create scoring opportunities for the other forwards and midfielders.

“He’s just a real interesting kid,” Moore said. “Last year, I would have liked to have had him out here with us, but he wanted to pursue football. I can appreciate that. He’s really having a big year.”

Meade boys soccer forfeits opener

The Meade boys soccer team was forced to forfeit its season-opening win against Glen Burnie when it was discovered that one of its players was too old to be eligible to compete.

School officials reported the violation to the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Office of Athletics, who then notified the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.

Under MPSSAA rules, students cannot be older than 19 years old as of August 31 in order to compete in athletic contests. The student was removed from the team when the infraction was confirmed.

Vuvuzelas, bagpipes and more at Loyola soccer

You can expect to see just about anything in the two small sets of bleachers that comprise the student section for the No. 2-ranked Loyola boys soccer team.

Thursday afternoon's steady rain didn't deter the Dons' supporters from coming out in droves to watch the home team earn a huge 2-1 win over No. 1 Mount St. Joseph in a key Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game.

They were decked out in blue and gold with paint on their faces and drums, vuvuzelas and the school flag in hand. In addition to the team's mascot, an armored knight, another student was sporting a kilt and working the bagpipes like a champ.

In unison, the enthusiastic and persistent group chanted and sang songs that -- fan for fan -- would have rivaled any effort you hear at a professional game overseas.

As for a backup, the football team usually makes an appearance at some point following practice to provide added support.

"We have a really nice environment where they're right on the field and just going crazy. It's great," said Loyola coach Lee Tschantret.

Gaels, Eagles make national boys soccer polls

Top-ranked Mount St. Joseph entered the season ranked 10th in the U.S. by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Gaels are the only team from Maryland to crack the Top 25. No. 2 McDonogh also received votes. The Eagles, however, are ranked third in the ESPNRise poll, and Mount St. Joseph is 31. The rankings could become clearer this week as the two teams play Tuesday at Mount St. Joseph.

McDonogh grad Horwath in the MLS

Former McDonogh soccer goalkeeper Alex Horwath, a 2005 grad who helped the Eagles capture the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship in his senior year, has signed a contract with Major League Soccer as a pool goalkeeper.

Horwath, who was a three-year starter at Wisconsin after starting his college career at Connecticut, is based in Kansas City training with the Wizards although he's not on the team's 24-man roster.

The MLS signs pool goalkeepers to ensure that teams have backup goalies for emergency situations such as injury or suspension. Although he is in Kansas City, any other MLS team can pick him if needed.

Horwath completed his college career at Wisconsin last fall, registering 17 shutouts and posting a 1.19 goals-against average.

St. Martin, who has coached 10 seasons at Mount St. Joseph, will receive the award at the NSCAA National Convention on Jan. 16 in Philadelphia and becomes a finalist for the National Award.

Agorsor a champion at Virginia

Former McDonogh soccer standout Chris Agorsor, The Sun's Male Athlete of the Year for the 2007-08 school year, was a member of the Virginia men's soccer team that captured The NCAA Division I championship on Sunday with a 3-2 shootout win over Akron in the College Cup.

Agorsor, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last year as a freshman, returned to start 10 games for the Cavaliers, who finished the season with a 19-3-3 mark to capture their sixth national title.

The sophomore forward scored two goals and added two assists in 13 games this season.

As a McDonogh senior in 2007, Agorsor was the NSCAA/Adidas National High School Player of the Year and the Gatorade National player of the Year.

Three local soccer players earn All-American honors

Archbishop Curley’s Oumar Ballo was just one of eight players to earn a return spot on the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Boys High School All-America Team. Ballo is a two-time Baltimore Sun First-Team All-Metro pick, and is regarded as one of the top defenders in the nation. He will play for Loyola in the fall.

Two players from McDonogh, Marquez Fernandez and Mamadou Kansaye, were the other two players from Maryland named to the team. Fernandez, last year’s Baltimore Sun Player of the Year, and Kansaye will continue to be teammates at the University of Maryland next season.

Also, Mount St. Joseph, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference champion, is ranked 15th in the latest NSCAA poll -- the highest of any team in the state.

Lights, cameras, action at Calvert Hall

Thursday's first of its kind soccer game at Calvert Hall -- the first athletic event ever played under the lights in school history -- lived up to its billing and then some with visiting Mount St. Joseph taking on the lead role in a Hollywood-like script.

The Gaels came away with a win in penalty kicks to advance to Monday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship against defending league champion McDonogh.

How they made it was nothing short of incredible with a number of heroes taking turns on center stage. First to step up was JV goalie Dominic Ruggiero, who was unexpectedly pressed into action when starter Brad Benzing was not available due to what coach Mike St. Martin called school-related issues.

Playing in front of an estimated 2,700 fans, Ruggiero was able to keep the Gaels close, enabling Jalen Robinson to tie the game at 2 with just 15 seconds left in regulation as the Calvert Hall student body was ready to spill onto the field.

Then, senior forward David Arnold stole the show when the game went into penalty kicks. As penalty kicks approached, St.Martin asked Arnold, tall and athletic, to not only take a penalty kick, but also stop some. So after making good on his penalty kick to get the Gaels off to a strong start, he made saves on the last three Calvert Hall attempts to give the Gaels a 3-2 win.

It was the first time Arnold, a team captain, had been in goal since he was 11 years old.

Mount St. Joseph will take on McDonogh at 7 p.m. Monday at Johns Hopkins. The Gaels upset the Eagles, 2-1, in early October. It was the Eagles' first loss of the season and came the same week they were named the No. 1-ranked team in the country for the first time ever.

Monday's game also will be a rematch of last year's title game, a 6-1 win by McDonogh.

Patterson boys soccer falls

The Patterson boys soccer team, which went undefeated in the regular season and repeated as Baltimore City champs, had their season end with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Urbana in Thursday's Class 4A North region playoffs.

The Clippers, whose roster had players from 12 different countries across five continents, finished with a 14-1 mark. They took a 2-0 lead early on goals from Bash Kamara and James Tarra, but Urbana, from Frederick County, got both goals back in the first half and then scored the game-winner with five minutes left in regulation to advance.

"I am very proud of our guys for leaving everything on the field," Patterson coach Harry Martin said. "They played with a tremendous amount of pride and energy for the whole game."

Thursday night lights at Calvert Hall

For the first time since the school opened in 1845 and moved to Towson 115 years later, Calvert Hall will host an athletic event under the lights on campus. The Cardinals will play the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference soccer semifinal at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. The game will be against the winner of Friday’s game between Mount St. Joseph and Archbishop Curley.

Calvert Hall athletic director Lou Eckerl said President Brother Thomas Zoppo decided to look into having a night event at Calvert Hall so more parents would be able to attend, especially with daylight savings time. Zoppo decided that a soccer playoff game would be good to determine the positives and negatives of hosting games in the evening. The school is renting the lights for the game.

The Cardinals (10-5) entered the MIAA playoffs as a No. 2 seed, earning a first-round bye. Calvert Hall is seeking its first title since 2003.

McDonogh senior defender Joe Meyer has made a commitment to play soccer at Bucknell next year.

The first-team All-Metro selection chose Bucknell over Princeton, Brown, Virginia and UMBC.

Meyer, who maintains a weighted 4.2 grade point average, has played a big role in helping the Eagles capture the past two Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championships.

Loyola boys soccer goalie commits to San Diego State

Loyola senior goalie Tim Peitsch has made a verbal commitment to play soccer at San Diego State University.

The four-year starter has played in all but one game for the Dons since his freshman season. Last year, he missed one game with a broken thumb.

In addition to his fine career at Loyola, Peitsch also was the starting goalie for two Casa Mia Bays club teams that captured national championships in 2007 and 2008. McDonogh boys, Spalding girls drop in national polls

Turns out the McDonogh boys soccer team had a short run as the nation's No. 1 team.

After taking over the top spot in the ESPN Rise and NSCAA polls last week -- the first time the program has ever reached No. 1 in either -- the Eagles were upset, 2-1, by Mount St. Joseph on Friday.

McDonogh dropped to 13th in the ESPN poll and 17th in the NSCAA. Today's game against visiting Archbishop Curley, set for 4 p.m. at McDonogh, was postponed until tomorrow with the game time set for 4:15.

The Archbishop Spalding girls also were ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA, but dropped to fourth after a scoreless tie against Good Counsel last week. The Cavaliers are No. 10 in the ESPN rankings.

Severna Park-Broadneck renew rivalries

One of the best neighborhood rivalries in the entire metro area can be found in Anne Arundel County, where Severna Park and Broadneck have maintained excellent athletic programs throughout the years.

In the next couple days, the rivalry will add new layers with the schools battling it out in a number of sports.

On Thursday, the No. 3 Broadneck volleyball team will travel to No. 5 Severna Park for a 5 p.m. match.

Later on Thursday, Broadneck's newly-anointed No. 1 field hockey team also visits Severna Park to take on the No. 3 and defending Class 4A state champ Falcons at 7 p.m.

On Friday, boys soccer takes center stage when the No. 2 Falcons travel to No. 4 Broadneck at 7 p.m.

Bulls doing his thing at UMBC

Flipping through the channels on Tuesday night, I stumbled upon a familiar scene on the local news while catching some college soccer highlights: Andrew Bulls celebrating a goal.

Bulls, now a sophomore at UMBC, was a standout at McDonogh, earning All-Metro honors as a senior midfielder in 2007.

On Tuesday, he scored on a free kick from 20-plus yards out to lead the undefeated Retrievers (8-0) to a 1-0 win over Loyola.

Bulls, who has 10 goals and five assists this season, also scored a game-winner in a 1-0 win against Towson last week.

The Retrievers also are getting fine play from freshman Phil Saunders (Perry Hall) in goal. He came up with three big saves in Tuesday's win and has allowed just three goals all season.

Support a good cause

Matt DeOrsey was a standout soccer player at Middletown High in Frederick and Towson University in the 1990s.

From all accounts, he was an even greater person. On Jan. 23, 2008, DeOrsey died suddenly of an apparent heart attack just two days before his 31st birthday, leaving behind his wife and three children.

To celebrate his life, family and friends are hosting the second annual DeOFest to raise money for The Matt DeOrsey Children's Fund and The Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region.

The gathering, set for Sept. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m., will take place at Slainte Irish Pub and Woody Rum Bar & Island Grill in Fells Point. Tickets are $50 and include all you can eat, all you can drink and live entertainment.

Time and site changes for McDonogh boys soccer tournament

Saturday's games in the McDonogh boys soccer tournament that were scheduled to take place at the school have been moved to Loyola College. The times also have changed.

McDonogh and Perry Hall, again!

It was last year's most stunning goal that produced the season's biggest upset: Perry Hall's Ray Rogowski provided it with an overtime header that beat No. 1 McDonogh on the Eagles' home field.

It turned out to help serve two purposes.

For the Gators, who were ranked No. 7 at the time and had lost to Archbishop Curley, 3-0, the day before, it showed they could play with anybody and gave them an added surge of confidence to later reach the Class 4A state championship game.

For McDonogh, it said nothing can be taken for granted. It would be the only setback for the Eagles as they finished with a 20-1 season as the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champs.

One year later, the teams are set to meet again Saturday afternoon in the closing game of the two-day McDonogh Tournament.

Friday's games -- Perry Hall vs. Archbishop Curley, 3 p.m., and McDonogh vs. Centennial, 5 -- have been moved to Cedar Lane Park due to the rain.

Saturday's games, originally scheduled to take place at McDonogh, have been moved to Loyola College. The Centennial-Curley game is set for 12, with the McDonogh-Perry Hall showdown scheduled for 2.

Tomorrow, the tournament returns to McDonogh with Centennial and Curley set for 11 a.m. followed by the much-anticipated Perry Hall-McDonogh rematch.

Is there any added motivation on the Eagles' part?

"It's a different year, different team. But we do have a lot of the same players," said McDonogh coach Steve Nichols. "Last year's game was more of a wake-up call from a coaches' standpoint. If it doesn't happen we don't wake up and make that run. From a players' perspective, I think our guys took that result personally."

Fallston boys soccer reloads

Whatever the sport may be, some programs have the innate ability to simply reload as oppose to rebuild after suffering significant graduate hits.

One of those programs is the Fallston boys soccer team, which has had to revamp its lineup this season after graduating eight starters from last year's Class 3A state runner-up squad.

The No. 5 Cougars went up against No. 6 River Hill, another perennial state power with more experienced talent, on Tuesday and held their own before falling in the closing minutes, 2-1.

In the losing cause, the Cougars played organized with good pace and purpose for all 80 minutes, a credit to coach Christopher Hoover and his staff. The one player that stood out from both teams was Fallston senior forward Mikey Antinozzi, who is a great example of how the special programs maintain excellence.

In Tuesday's game, Antinozzi had quality touch after quality touch, proving a tough mark with the ability to create his own shot or set up teammates as the Cougars' offensive centerpiece.

"Last year, he was our third option up there. But this year, he has really stepped up both as a leader and taken over. He understands the flow of the game real well and knows what we want to do," Hoover said.

Baltimore Bays club well represented

The Baltimore Bays youth soccer club has established itself as a national power, consistently winning national championships in a number of age groups in recent years.

The club's success also paid dividends for a number of area high schools as 37 freshmen players -- girls and boys -- have earned varsity roster spots from 24 schools.
