Chesapeake Charge to challenge for national crown
The Chesapeake Charge, which plays in Women's Premier Soccer League, will be vying for a national championship when it competes in the U.S. Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Cup Finals, set to start this Friday in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Charge earned a berth in the Women's Cup division by capturing Region I with a 2-1 upset win over defending national champion NY Athletic Club last weekend. It will open the tournament against the St. Louis JB Marine at 9:30 a.m. in the semifinal round.
The Charge, which is 5-1-4 in its second season in the WPSL, will be led by defender Jess Hnatiuk (John Carroll) and goalkeeper Yewande Balogun. Other former area high school standouts on the roster and making the trip are Erica Suter (River Hill), Cynthia Gamboa (Notre Dame Prep), Kristene Mumby (Marriotts Ridge), Lyndse Hokanson (South River), along with current Mercy standout Alexis Prior-Brown.
With a semifinal win, the Charge would advance to Sunday's championship game set for 10:30 a.m. North Carolina-based Triad United Aces takes on Utah's Sparta United WSC in Friday's other semifinal.
