Mount St. Joseph rising senior Jalen Robinson scored late in the first half Wednesday to help the U.S. under-18 men's national soccer team to a 1-1 tie against rival Mexico in the second group game of the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

Robinson’s goal came with just seconds remaining in the half, when he drove a low shot from about eight yards away off Victor Pineda’s corner kick.

The U.S. earned four points in two group games and will face Georgia for third-place in the six-team tournament. Denmark and Northern Ireland will play for the championship.

Robinson, a three-year starter for the Gaels and a 2010 first-team All-Metro selection by The Baltimore Sun, also entered as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Israel on Monday.

He has already signed to play at Wake Forest.

Maryland Monarchs win Amateur Baseball Federation World Series

Varsity-monarchs-baseball.jpg

The Maryland Monarchs of the Eddie Brooks 19-and-Under Collegiate Wood Bat League took their sticks to Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend and won the National Amateur Baseball Federation High School World Series.

Comprised of 18 high school rising seniors and two rising juniors, the Monarchs went 6-0 in the single elimination event at the University of Tennessee, which concluded Sunday and featured 20 teams from across the country.

"I knew we could pitch and play defense," Monarchs coach Steve Miller said. "And we hit enough. We had timely hitting and we've had that all season."

The Maryland team beat Allen Baseball of Houston 6-0 in the championship game on Sunday.

But Miller couldn't say everything went smoothly.

In the Monarchs' opening game of the tournament, pitcher Rob Koski (Calvert Hall) hit an opposing batter from Jackson, Miss., with a pitch, and the batter rushed the mound.

Koski suffered a fractured C-5 vertebra in the ensuing scuffle. Miller said the pitcher is doing well, but is in a neck brace and will be sidelined about six weeks. Miller said Koski will be fully recovered long before the start of the high school baseball season.

"Rob was injured when he was tackled and fell to the ground," Miller said. "Alex Barkley (Spalding) was trying to get his thumb out of a kid's mouth, who was like a biting dog, when someone noticed him hitting back. And Jamal Clarke (Spalding) was seen doing something, I don't know what.

"They were all suspended for the rest of the tournament, and the guy who initiated the incident was thrown out too. It left us with a short bench."

The Maryland team played the rest of the four day tournament with a 12-man roster.

Monarch shortstop Sean Miller was named the tournament's most valuable player, and right fielder Tom Labriola (Huntingtown) was the batting champion (.470, going 8 of 17). They joined Austin Clark, Joe Benitez (Spalding), Matt Golczewski (Patterson Mill), Lee Lipinski (Calvert Hall), Derek Wells (Spalding) and Michael Labriola (Huntingtown) on the all-tournament team.

"It was good competition," Steve Miller said. "And it was fun playing with the wood bats. It brings a lot more guys into play. Playing with wood means there is more emphasis on fielding, arm strength and speed. . . .There's a premium on pitching, catching and middle infield defense, and defenders who can run. It means relying on kids who can do a variety of things besides hit three-run home runs."

Miller, a former varsity head coach at Archbishop Spalding, owns an indoor baseball facility in Bowie called Extra Innings, where former pros and college players work out and instruct young players who come for lessons. Miller also works part time as a scout for the Kansas City Royals.

Centennial wrestler Kraisser commits to UNC

Varsity-Kraisser-carolina.jpg

All-America Centennial wrestler Nathan Kraisser committed to the University of North Carolina late Tuesday afternoon, lifting pressure from his shoulders and no doubt disappointing Maryland and Virginia Tech, the two other schools on his short list.

"I just committed two hours ago," Kraisser said by phone. "It's a relief, a big relief. Now I can just go wrestle and enjoy my senior year."

North Carolina is in the midst of building its wrestling program, and Kraisser said that aspect was appealing, as well as the belief that he could grow as a wrestler there.

"I liked the coaching staff,” he said. “I felt I'd have good teammates and I just felt comfortable there.”

Kraisser went 41-0 last season and has won 63 straight high school matches. He’s a three-time 4A-3A state, East Regional and Howard County champion.

Last week he earned dual All-America status at the Fargo Nationals by placing in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions in the 125-pound weight class. It’s the fourth straight year Kraisser has earned All-America honors in Fargo.

Archbishop Curley hires baseball, lacrosse coaches

Varsity-Curley-coaches.jpg

Archbishop Curley has hired a father-son tandem to take over its baseball program.

Tim Norris and his son Brooks — both Curley alums — were named co-coaches of the Friars on Tuesday.

Curley also announced that John Tucker, also a Curley alum, will become its lacrosse coach.

Tim Norris graduated from Curley in 1978. He was drafted by the Orioles his senior year and pitched for five years in their farm system. For three of those years he was roommates with Cal Ripken Jr.

Norris coached Curley baseball from 1998 through 2002 and won two championships. He currently manages Youse’s Maryland Orioles in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League and the Oriolelanders, a high school fall showcase team for the Baltimore Orioles. He is also a part-time Orioles scout.

His son Brooks played baseball at Curley and the University of Maryland. He has worked as an instructor with Ripken Baseball, the Southern Maryland Baseball Camp and the Dave Johnson Baseball Academy. He was Curley’s pitching coach last season under Jack Thomas, who resigned this summer due to increased work demands at his full-time job.

While having a father-son combo as head coach might sound unusual, Greg Malanowski, the assistant director of advancement at Curley, said it’s not unique at the school, where the varsity volleyball team is coached by Joe D’Adamo and his son John, who are also Curley graduates.

Tucker, however, is on his own. The 1979 Curley grad is currently the school’s admissions director and a social studies teacher. He replaces Josiah LaTona.

Tucker played midfield for the 1984 Johns Hopkins team that went undefeated and won the NCAA championship. He was also a captain of Team USA, which won gold medals at the World Lacrosse Championships in 1986, 1990 and 1994. He earned All-World Team honors in 1990 and 1994.

As a pro, Tucker led the Philadelphia Wings to two championships. He’s a member of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame’s Baltimore Chapter and the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame.

He coached both outdoor (MLL) and indoor (NLL) and also coached at Severn, Gilman and Loyola, winning four MIAA A Conference titles.

“I left coaching because I didn’t want to miss my kids growing up,” said Tucker, 50. “Our oldest is going to Virginia next year. I didn’t want to miss any of his games at Gilman. And now the position here has opened up at just the right time.”

Tucker said he never touched a lacrosse stick until after he walked on Curley’s campus as an eighth grader. Now he is in his fifth year back at the school and excited to enter his first year as the school’s head coach.

“It’s like I’ve come full circle,” he said. “It’s really exciting to me. The view is so different now. When I first started, I had no basic knowledge. I hadn’t had kids. Now, I can look back at the experiences. Now I have perspective on how what I say impacts each of these kids. I’ve been at it a long time. I love the kids and it is an honor to be influential in their lives.”

Four area wrestlers earn All-America honors at Fargo Nationals

Varsity-Jack-Clark-McDonogh.jpg

When area high schools open next month, there will be four new All-America wrestlers walking the halls.

Centennial rising senior Nathan Kraisser, who has emerged as an All-American four times from the Fargo, N.D., national tournament, had his best overall performance at the tournament last week, placing fourth in the freestyle and fifth in the Greco-Roman 125-pound competitions to earn double All-America status for the first time.

Cory Daniel, a River Hill rising sophomore, earned All-America status with a seventh place finish at 160 in the Greco-Roman class. In April, Daniel also earned All-American status at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Va., with a second-place finish at 152.

McDonogh rising sophomore Jack Clark finished third in freestyle at 140 pounds.

And Bryce Pappas, entering his sophomore season at St. Mary's, finished fourth in freestyle to earn All-America honors in the 152-pound class.

"I don't think anyone saw this coming," Pappas' father, Drew, said. "He had finished second at states and seventh at National Preps. But he's never wrestled nationally before. We had no clue what the competition would be like. But he really wrestled tough all the way through. We're very proud of him."

To participate at Fargo, a wrestler had to be among the top three in his weight class. Forty-three states were represented. But the competition didn't seem to scare Bryce Pappas, who had been wrestling since age 5.

He started after his parents saw a wrestling flyer and decided to take Bryce's older brother, Andrew, to experience the sport.

"We never pushed Bryce," Drew Pappas said. "We just let him roll around. His brother did it and little brother did it too. But over the last year or two in junior league Bryce has improved leaps and bounds. He and Andrew both get the sport and love it."

Calvert Hall's Bosse named to All-American team

Varsity-Matt-Bosse.jpg

Calvert Hall's Matt Bosse has been named to the 2011 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings High School All-American Team.

Bosse was a third-team selection as a designated hitter and the only player from Maryland to make the team. Dylan Bundy, who was the fourth overall pick in this year's draft by the Orioles, was the Player of the Year.

Bosse, a first-team All-Metro pick by The Baltimore Sun, led the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference with 16 home runs and finished his career as the Cardinals' all-time leader in homers with 26. He also batted .439 with 50 RBIs.

Bosse has signed to play at Maryland.

Calvert Hall will have its own Friday night lights

Calvert Hall plans to have permanent lights in place at Paul Angelo Russo Stadium for the start of this fall's football and soccer seasons.

Calvert Hall installed temporary lights last fall to gauge how well they would be received by the school, alumni and surrounding community. It was deemed a resounding success when more than 4,000 fans turned out for the school’s first-ever Friday night home football game Oct. 9 against then top-ranked Gilman.

The lights could also represent a shift in the football schedule for the Marylalnd Interscholastic Athletic Association, which has traditionally played games on Saturday afternoon. Calvert Hall joins Archbishop Spalding as the only schools that compete in the MIAA A conference in both football and soccer that have permanent lights at their stadiums.

The Cardinals are scheduled to play four 7 p.m. home football games this season -- Sept. 16 against Red Lion Christian of Delaware, Oct. 14 against Georgetown Prep, Oct. 21 against Spalding and Nov. 4 against Mount St. Joseph.

Georgetown Prep, which competes in the MIAA A conference for just football, plays all of its home games on Fridays at 6:30 p.m.

St. Mary’s also has permanent lights, but the Saints compete in the B conference for football and soccer. St. Mary’s hosts night lacrosse game as members of the A conference. John Carroll also has night games for its B conference football games, but not for A conference soccer.

The Cardinals hosted their first night soccer game in 2009, an MIAA playoff game against Mount St. Joseph, which drew an estimated 1,000 spectators. Calvert Hall also lost to Loyola in the conference quarterfinals under the lights this past fall.

Calvert Hall will also have permanent lights at Carlo Crispino Baseball Stadium installed by the beginning of this school year.

Crab Bowl announces new selection process

Varsity-crab-bowl.jpg

Baltimore All-Stars, including Dunbar's Tavon Austin (No. 9) and Franklin's Carl Fleming (No. 24) celebrate a touchdown during the first-ever Maryland Crab Bowl in 2008. The format for selecting players will be different for this year's event. (Baltimore Sun photo by Chiaki Kawajiri)

Tony Kennedy acknowledges that worthy players have been missed in the selection process for the annual Crab Bowl senior all-star football game.

So the director of football operations for the Mid-Atlantic Football Foundation has announced a new format geared toward making the game a true state-wide showcase.

Starting this year, the Crab Bowl will divide the state into 11 districts and put a coach from each in charge of picking players from that area.

"It's all about making sure you have representation from all across the state," Kennedy said. "If you call yourself a state game, you can't just have people from Prince George's County and Baltimore County. You've got to pick from all across the state.

"I know we've missed kids."

Previously, Kennedy said, the teams were selected by the coaching associations based largely on word of mouth.

The fourth-annual Crab Bowl -- which pits player from the Baltimore area against those from Washington -- is scheduled for Dec. 17 at Bowie State. Seniors from public and private high schools in Maryland are eligible.

Baltimore won last year's game 21-17 after losing the first two.

Loyola's Brian Abbott will coach the Baltimore all-stars in this year's game, while Huntington's Jerry Franks will coach Washington.

Following is a list of the coaches selected to choose players from each of the 11 districts:

District 1: (Garret, Allegany, Washington, Carroll, Frederick) Richard Conner – Linganore High School

District 2: (Montgomery) David Mencarini Quince Orchard High School

District 3: (Prince George's) Tom Green – Eleanor Roosevelt High School

District 4: (Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's) Dominic Zaccarelli – Westlake High School

District 5: (Howard, Anne Arundel) Chuck Markiewicz – Arundel High School

District 6: (Baltimore County) Anthony Burgos Franklin High School

District 7: (Harford, Cecil) Ken Brinkman – North Hartford High School

District 8: (Kent, Queen Anne, Talbot, Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, Worchester, Somerset) Brandon Riley – Parkside High School

District 9: (Baltimore City) Lawrence Smith – Dunbar High School

District 10: (Big Private Schools) Bob Milloy – Good Counsel High School

District 11: (Small Private Schools) Bob Shields – Riverdale Baptist High School

Kennedy also mentioned that the Crab Bowl and the Chesapeake Bowl -- a regional all-star game -- are now nonprofits, which he expects to make it easier to raise money for the events.

"It's just a process of making it better," he said.

Sandiford's team reaches National Cup final

Earlier this week, Glenn Graham wrote an alumni report on Chante' Sandiford. On Friday night, the former McDonogh soccer star helped the club team Eagles SC of Camarillo, Calif., to the finals of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association U-23 National Cup by posting a shutout in the semifinals.

Sandiford -- who is heading into her senior season as the goalkeeper at UCLA -- made five saves as Eagles SC defeated Texas-based D’feeters 5-0 in Bowling Green, Ky.

Eagles SC goes for its fourth consecutive age-specific national championship Sunday against KC Dynamos, which beat the Southampton Crunch 7-0 in the other semifinal.

Sandiford, an Owings Mills native, is the only non-Californian on the Eagles SC roster. But she wasn't the only player from the state in Bowling Green for the USASA national cups.

The Chesapeake Charge, an amateur club that plays its games at Carroll Field in Odenton, fell in the semifinals of the USASA Open Cup.

What are your thoughts on the Turkey Bowl's relocation?

The annual Turkey Bowl football game between Calvert Hall and Loyola is moving to Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium this year because of the Ravens' Thanksgiving night home game against the 49ers.

Will the move change the atmosphere for the 92nd edition of the game?

Should the teams have kept the game at M&T Bank Stadium and played on a different day?

Or is Unitas Stadium a better fit for the event in general?

Share your thoughts on the relocation in the comments section below.

Silver released as Western girls basketball coach

Western girls basketball coach Tiffany Silver found out Friday that she would not be returning for a seventh season as the Doves coach.

A 1998 Western graduate and former Doves player, Silver said she was told by Western principal Alisha Trusty that she and her staff were not being asked to come back. Silver said she wasn't given a "particular reason" for her release "just that we weren't coming back, that they were going in a different direction pretty much."

Saying that she was shocked and "crushed," Silver added, "You devote so much more than just time and you were an alum of that program. It meant a lot more to us. We were not just a fly-by-night coaching staff. We cared about what we did and we did a lot there."

Silver had a 126-29 record with the Doves, led them to five Baltimore City championships, five regional championships and three state title-game appearances. She said she has also graduated 100 percent of her players and all have gotten into college.

This past season, the No. 11 Doves finished 14-8 and defeated archrival Poly for the city Division I championship, but they dropped a heartbreaker to Catonsville in the regional playoffs and did not get back to the state tournament, where they reached the final in 2006, 2007 and 2010.

The Breezy Bishop Showcase, which Silver started in 2006 at Western, will continue although a new location will have to be found. She said 50 teams have committed to this year's event, Dec. 9 -11.

Silver, a city schools police officer, said she hopes to coach again soon, but for the rest of the summer, she will focus on the final weeks of her pregnancy. She and husband Nick Usher, who was the Doves JV coach, are expecting their first child, daughter Dorian Chanel Usher, on Sept. 8.
