Poly's Headley steps down after 10 titles
In 10 seasons as the Poly girls lacrosse coach, Josh Headley has guided the Engineers to every Baltimore City championship.
During the last few years, though, his priorities have been switching to a couple of other athletes — son Justin, 8, and daughter Paige, 5.
“I really want to see my kids grow up,” Headley said, “and I had heard from too many long-time coaches, ‘Yeah, I never saw my kids’ games.’ I don’t want to be that guy.”
While Headley has coached his children’s rec soccer teams, his desire to spend more time with them, as well as added responsibilities as head of Poly’s history department, were stretching him a bit too thin. Despite his success as lacrosse coach as well as eight years as the girls soccer coach, he’s decided to let coaching go.
Headley goes out on a high note as the Engineers (10-3) overcame a rough stretch late in the season to claim their 10th straight city title. They had to forfeit a 14-2 win over Western after Headley found out his goalie was academically ineligible. With that loss, Poly faced a must-win game against City for sole possession of the title.
Selena Guerrero-Martin scored six goals and Sukaina Miftah, five while back-up keeper Zoe Spiliadis turned in a stellar effort as the Engineers won 14-4.
