Seton Keough's Boswell moves on

When Seton Keough basketball coach Jackie Boswell decided to take the head coaching job at Stevenson University, she knew that would be the easy part.

Telling her players? Telling her fellow coaches? Actually walking away? Not so easy.

“It was harder than I thought after being there for 14 years,” Boswell said Wednesday. “I feel like I have a good rapport with the faculty, and so it was really difficult. Last week, I met with my coaches on Wednesday night, and I’ve had some of those same coaches for the entire time I’ve been there. Telling the girls on Thursday was really rough. A couple of the basketball players took it so hard that I almost turned around and said: ‘You know what? I’ll just stay,’ but they all are really happy for me.”

Boswell led the Gators to a 21-9 season last winter in which they were runners up in the IAAM A Conference and ranked No. 3. Six seniors from that basketball team were graduating, so when she learned of the Stevenson opening, Boswell decided the timing was right.

She's looking forward to a new challenge at Stevenson, which finished last season 4-21 but has had success in the past, going 20-7 in 2005-06 with a trip to the ECAC Division III South championship and finishing 19-10 the following year.

"I'm looking forward seeing if I can take the program to the next level," Boswell said. "I've been saying for years I think this area is really good to try to find some Division III players. There's so much good basketball being played in the Baltimore and D.C. and Pennsylvania, Virginia area, I think it will be fun to try to go to the next level and coach a bunch of kids moving on to the next phase of their lives."

Boswell made sure the decision was okay with the three most important girls in her life, daughters Kayla, 11; Elayna, 9; and Tessa, 7. They have been fixtures around the Seton Keough gym their whole lives, so it will be hard for them to leave, too.

The Mustangs' job, which she starts July 7, also will require more time during the summer. While getting her program going, Boswell expects to have to commit about the same amount of time as she did at Seton Keough, where she was also the athletic director and softball coach.

She said her daughters -- and her husband -- are used to her work schedule.

"For the past 10 years, I've worked such crazy hours and they've really grown up [at Seton Keough]. They don't know any other way really, and I hope that what I'm showing them -- especially having three daughters -- is that you really can do everything. I think it takes a huge supporting cast, and they're very supportive on their end and I do talk to them all the time about the things that they sacrifice, but it's really important, I think, for our family dynamic. That's what makes our family work."

Boswell has made it a priority to take one of the girls on every basketball trip she has taken while coaching or working camps.

"I've tried really hard over the past 10 years to include them in on everything that I can. As many trips as we go on -- like Seton Keough has gone to Texas -- I've taken one kid with me, so I can have some one-on-one time with that child and they feel like it's special. When I used to coach AAU, they would just rotate. I'm in Florida right now, getting ready to work the Florida camp [Thursday], and my middle daughter's with me."

Boswell said Seton Keough officials would interview prospective athletic director candidates next month, and, if they don't find someone who can also coach the basketball team, they will look for a separate basketball coach after that. She said she believes her assistant softball coach, Chris Snee, will take over the softball team and remain the JV basketball coach.

An exceptionally successful two-sport coach, Boswell was the All-Metro Basketball Coach of the Year in 2009 and the All-Metro Softball Coach of the Year in 2003. She led her teams to three IAAM A Conference crowns -- one in basketball and two in softball.

A graduate of Archbishop Spalding and Virginia Wesleyan, she played basketball and softball at both. At Seton Keough, she assisted Jim Stromberg for several years before taking over the head basketball coach position in 2000 when he moved on to St. Paul's.

The Gators, one of the area's top girls basketball programs long before Boswell arrived, remained among the area's best throughout her tenure. She took them to six A Conference finals and, in 2009, won that title as well as championships at the Bishop Walsh Girls Invitational Tournament and the ESPN Rise National Invitational. The Gators finished that season No. 1 in The Sun and No. 12 in the ESPN Rise poll.

Registration open for Workhorse Wrestling Camp in Anne Arundel

Meade wrestling coach Chad Vosburg wants to remind any wrestler (ages 8 to 18) who wants to get sound coaching this summer about the Workhorse Wrestling Commuter Camp, which runs July 18-21 from 8:30 a.m. -- 4 p.m. Meade is hosting the camp at Arundel High. The cost of the camp is $150 per wrestler, with a limit of 100 total wrestlers.

The camp will be run similarly to the Granby School of Wrestling Camps in Virginia. This camp is geared toward increasing wrestling knowledge, both technically and mentally. The camp will focus on a system of moves that will be developed through thorough drilling and repetition.

Takedowns will include Sweep Singles, Inside Step and Russian Arm Series. Bottom work will focus on 5-point holds that include Granby Rolls, Shrugs and the Forced Roll Series. Top work will include Bars, Tilts, Turks and Cradles. Diet plans, weight training, conditioning, work ethic, and mental toughness will all be discussed in the last 15 minutes of each day.

Jon Soiredas, current Old Dominion assistant coach and head clinician at the Granby School of Wrestling, will be conducting the camp. Soiredas will be assisted by current and past Old Dominion All-Americans and wrestlers.

Gibson, Salvarola picked for USA softball teams

Lauren Gibson (Chesapeake-AA) and Kourtney Salvarola (Broadneck) were recently selected to USA National Softball Team rosters. Both are former Baltimore Sun Players of the Year.

Gibson, a sophomore at Tennessee, will play for the full U.S. National Team, while Salvarola, a freshman at South Florida, was named to the USA Junior National Women’s Team.

"It is unbelievable to have two girls from Maryland on USA teams at this level and both are from Anne Arundel county," Chesapeake-AA coach Don Ellenberger said. "It may never happen again."

Gibson, a second baseman, had a .420 overall batting average and a team-best 13 doubles with three triples, eight home runs and 63 RBIs. She was also 12-for-12 on stolen bases for the Volunteers. Salvarola, a shortstop, was one of four players to start all 53 games for the Bulls, batting .290. She was second on the team with six home runs and 43 RBIs. She also led the team in total bases (79), triples (four) and hit by pitches(seven).

The national team will play a two-game exhibition series in Plant City, Fla., on Saturday, June 25, and then will travel to Salem, Va., for another exhibition series on June 29.

The final tune-up before international play will be in Bowie on July 1.

From July 9-17, 12 of the 18 players will play in their first international tournament at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., before returning home for the World Cup of Softball VI, July 21-25 in Oklahoma City.

Poly's Headley steps down after 10 titles

In 10 seasons as the Poly girls lacrosse coach, Josh Headley has guided the Engineers to every Baltimore City championship.

During the last few years, though, his priorities have been switching to a couple of other athletes — son Justin, 8, and daughter Paige, 5.

“I really want to see my kids grow up,” Headley said, “and I had heard from too many long-time coaches, ‘Yeah, I never saw my kids’ games.’ I don’t want to be that guy.”

While Headley has coached his children’s rec soccer teams, his desire to spend more time with them, as well as added responsibilities as head of Poly’s history department, were stretching him a bit too thin. Despite his success as lacrosse coach as well as eight years as the girls soccer coach, he’s decided to let coaching go.

Headley goes out on a high note as the Engineers (10-3) overcame a rough stretch late in the season to claim their 10th straight city title. They had to forfeit a 14-2 win over Western after Headley found out his goalie was academically ineligible. With that loss, Poly faced a must-win game against City for sole possession of the title.

Selena Guerrero-Martin scored six goals and Sukaina Miftah, five while back-up keeper Zoe Spiliadis turned in a stellar effort as the Engineers won 14-4.

The fourth annual National Lacrosse Classic will take place July 6-8 at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds.

The National Lacrosse Classic, presented by Brine, Gatorade and Lacrosse.com, brings together the top high school underclassman lacrosse players in the country to one venue, where regional teams compete to become the U.S. champion. Players are selected to regional teams from tryouts scheduled throughout the country.

Seventeen cities including Baltimore, served as hosts for players trying out for their respective regional teams. Cities include: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland, Chicago, Dallas, Princeton (N.J.), Philadelphia, Lancaster (Pa.), Long Island (N.Y), St. Louis, Boston, Rochester (N.Y.), Washington D.C., Atlanta, Charlotte and Tampa.

Sixty-six players, boys and girls, who attend public and private schools in Maryland have been selected from a large pool of talent to compete at the National Lacrosse Classic.
