Boys lax: Glenelg, Hereford leave fine impressions.
Though the Glenelg boys lacrosse team was clearly not at its best Tuesday night at UMBC Stadium, it still showed poise when it counted the most to capture the program's third Class 2A-1A state championship with a 5-4 win over Patterson Mill. The Gladiators finished the campaign with an impressive 19-1 mark -- defeating Class 3A-2A state champ Hereford and defending state champ Severna Park along the way. A quick scroll down the team's roster makes a strong argument that the Gladiators will be back next year. Standout attackmen Nick Wynne will be a senior and his little brother, Mikey, will be a sophomore, and faceoff specialist Anthony Pagnotta will be a junior. And on and on.
The No. 7 Hereford Bulls, also 19-1, have been churning out state titles like it's just another day at the office. They captured their fourth straight with a convincing 14-7 win over Middletown in the Class 3A-2A final. Lose last year's All-Metro Player of the Year, Rustin Bryant, to graduation? No problem. Lose nearly their entire defense from last year? No problem. Lose their starting goalie early in the season to injury? No problem. The Bulls simply keep rolling by playing as one and promising to outwork the opponent.
