BCL's inaugural Hall of Fame banquet set

The Baltimore Catholic League, which was formed in 1971 and has grown into one of the country's most prominent boys basketball leagues, will honor past players, coaches and administrators with a newly formed Hall of Fame.

The inaugural banquet, set for 6 p.m. on May 19 at Rolling Road Country Club in Catonsville, will feature Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams as the keynote speaker. Johnny Holliday, longtime voice of the Maryland's men's basketball and football teams, will emcee the program.

The inaugural inductees for 2011 include:

Student-Athletes -- *Larry Harrison ’75 (Towson Catholic); Ron Holthaus ’75 (Archbishop Curley); Pete Budko ’77 (Loyola); Tony Guy ’78 (Loyola); *Quintin Dailey ’79 (Cardinal Gibbons); Paul Edwards ’82 (Calvert Hall); Marc Wilson ’82 (Calvert Hall); Duane Ferrell ’84 (Calvert Hall); Rodney Monroe ’87 (St. Maria Goretti); Devin Gray ’91 (St. Frances); Steve Wojciechowski ’94 (Cardinal Gibbons); Mark Karcher ’97 (St. Frances); Rudy Gay ’04 (Archbishop Spalding); Will Thomas ’04 (Mount St. Joseph).

Coaches -- *Ray Mullis (Cardinal Gibbons); Jerry Savage (Loyola).

Contributors -- *John Plevyak (Mount St. Joseph); *Br. D. John Smith, FSC (Calvert Hall)

*Posthumously

The BCL currently consists of Archbishop Spalding, Calvert Hall, John Carroll, Loyola Blakefield, Mount St. Joseph, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Frances Academy and St. Maria Goretti. Archbishop Curley was a charter member, but does not currently compete in the league. Cardinal Gibbons and Towson Catholic also played in the league before recent closures.

The Selection Committee includes former coaches Mark Amatucci (Calvert Hall), Bryan Moorhouse (Cardinal Gibbons), Dan Popera (Archbishop Curley), Cokey Robertson (St. Maria Goretti), Jerry Savage (Loyola), William Wells (St. Frances) and current commissioner Jack Degele and former Jim "Snuffy" Smith.

"It's been a long time coming and long overdue," Degele said. "There's quality from top to bottom [in the inaugural class]. Not only were the players very good players, but they are good people who still care about their schools and the league.

"These coaches [Mullis and Savage] were good basketball people. They taught the game and developed the kids."
