Anne Arundel County athletes to be honored

The Friends of Joe Cannon Stadium will hold their 20th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie on June 5 from 6-10 p.m.

In conjunction with the banquet, the annual Friends of Joe Cannon “Battle of the Counties” Tournament will be held at the stadium June 4th, featuring all-star teams of high school seniors from Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery and Baltimore counties.

Tickets for the banquet are $30, available at the door or by calling Jocko Svoboda at 410-761-0642.

To be honored at the banquet are senior baseball players from Anne Arundel County’s public and private high schools who have been selected for their outstanding accomplishments as students, athletes and citizens. Three of the honorees will be presented with college scholarships totaling $6,000.

Other amateur baseball awards for Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Contributions to Officiating and Contributions to Youth Sports will also be presented. High school sports writer and broadcaster Pat O’Malley will serve as Master of Ceremonies and Keith Mills, sportscaster of the year in Maryland, will be the keynote speaker.

The senior scholar-athletes nominated by their respective high schools are:

Annapolis Area Christian, Luke Batchelor; North County, Alex Lombardi; Annapolis, Benjamin Taylor; Northeast, Joseph Summerlin; Archbishop Spalding, Ryan Metzler; Old Mill, Daniel Weller; Arundel, Devon Vallely; Saint Mary’s, Dan Usewick; Broadneck, Joseph DiPaola; Severn School, Sam Meisenberg; Chesapeake, Thomas Cornelius; Severna Park, Brent Jones;
Glen Burnie, Troy Davis; South River, Ryan Schoenbauer; Meade, Gabriel Cox; Southern, Corey Koller.

The Friends of Joe Cannon Stadium is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and support excellence and sportsmanship in amateur baseball in Anne Arundel County.
