Bosse: Calvert Hall's home run king

Calvert Hall outfielder Matt Bosse hit not only a game winning home run against Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A-Conference-rival Archbishop Curley on Monday, but he also broke the school's season record for home runs (11) held by Joe Vellegia (class of 2006).

Bosse had already broken the record for career homers, and currently has 21. The record was formerly held by Scott Krieger (2005), who had 19.

No. 1 Calvert Hall is currently 18-7 and 10-1 in league play.

Broadneck's Haley commits to Iowa for field hockey

Broadneck junior Anna Haley has committed to the University of Iowa for field hockey.

Coach Jen Parks said she is an incredibly hard worker and that she fell in love with Iowa's school, coaches, and its facilities when she visited.

"I am extremely happy for her and very proud," Parks said. "I can't remember the last time [Broadneck] had anyone commit in field hockey in the spring of her junior year -- definitely don't think it's happened in all my years coaching at Broadneck -- but it's proof of how hard Anna has worked and how talented she is."

Offense vs. Defense times two in boys lax tonight

Two boys lacrosse games particularly stand out tonight for their intriguing matchups.

Simply put: When surging Chesapeake-AA (6-0) visits No. 10 Arundel (7-0) at 7 p.m. and South Carroll (4-0) travels to No. 14 Westminster for a 6:45 start, something has to give on both fields. Coming off a huge 5-4 win over defending Class 4A-3A state champion Severna Park on Tuesday, Chesapeake has been the area's biggest surprise. It starts with stingy defense. Led by senior goalie Mike Brennan the Cougars are permitting just 3.3 goals per game this season with other wins coming against Broadneck and Annapolis. The Cougars' defense will get its stiffest tough to date going up against a mighty Arundel attack that features Wade Korvin, T.J. Holston and Hunter Cetrone. The Wildcats have averaged a whopping 15.2 goals per game.

In Carroll County, South Carroll features one of the area's most potent one-two punches in senior Ben McCarty and Chris Frederick, while the host Owls have a sturdy defense led by four-year starting goalie Eric Natale. The visiting Cavaliers have averaged 11-plus goals in the first four wins, while the Owls have allowed a skimpy 5.1 per game.

New sport for Patterson's Aquille Carr?

At Wednesday morning’s news conference announcing the 2011 I-95 Kickoff Classic, Patterson football coach Corey Johnson offered up an interesting tidbit about his backfield for the upcoming season.

It turns out that the Clippers’ season-opener against Archbishop Curley could double as the gridiron debut of star basketball player Aquille Carr, The Sun’s 2011 boys' basketball Player of the Year.

“Everyone’s probably excited to see Aquille Carr transition from the basketball court to the football field,” Johnson said Wednesday at Glory Days in Bowie. “He’s played [football] before, but he hasn’t played high school football. People will be excited to see what he’s going to bring to the table.”

On the basketball court, Carr is a known commodity. The 5-foot-7 sophomore guard averaged 32 points, six assists and five rebounds as the Clippers won the Baltimore City and Class 4A North region titles.

Carr is one of the highest-ranked prep players in the Class of 2013, and Johnson hopes his skills on the court will translate well for the 2010 Division 1 Baltimore City football champions and Class 4A semifinalists.

“He’ll probably play a little slot-back for me,” Johnson said. “Get him out catching some balls, trying to get him in some one-and-one situations. He’s just so dynamic and so fast, so that’ll be exciting.”

Havre de Grace freshman pitcher is 2-0

Havre de Grace freshman pitcher Kyle Greskoff posted his second win in as many attempts Tuesday, going eight innings for the 5-4 win against Aberdeen.

Greskoff gave up runs in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, but only one run was earned and he shut down the Eagles in the next four frames.

In his first game last week he went the distance, throwing a two-hitter and striking out 6. In the process, he broke a 27-year-old school record by earning the win and completing the game as a freshman pitching varsity.

Greskoff is a hard-throwing right-hander with a complimenting slider and sinker. On the season, he has pitched 15 innings, in two complete games, walked two and struck out 10.

Mount de Sales Friendship Lacrosse Tourney scheduled

The Mount de Sales Academy’s 24th Annual Friendship Lacrosse Tournament will take place April 16.

Here is what Mount de Sales varsity coach Abree Johnson has to say about it:

“First held in 1987, the Friendship Tournament was originally meant to be a means of bringing together talented local athletes whose teams would otherwise not play against each other during the regular season. It was also a means of gathering and sharing a common passion while acknowledging all that for which we are blessed and grateful.

This year we will hold the event at Western Regional Park in Howard County. MDSA has partnered with Howard County Rec. & Park to provide a free clinic to lacrosse players aged 5-8 prior to the official contests (Noon-2pm). MDSA players will focus on teaching the fundamentals as well as inspiring the young athletes to pursue their dreams.

The games will run on 2 turf fields from 2:30pm-9pm; 10 different school will be in attendance with teams traveling from as far as Pennsylvania. as far as PA.

There will be no trophy format and teams were not charged to participate. The MDSA lacrosse team did multiple fundraisers to cover the costs of such an event.

We are very pleased and proud of the girls for giving back such a gracious amount to the community.”

MIAA boys lacrosse: Wide open

In my first two seasons covering Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference boys lacrosse, there was always a team or two clearly to beat right from the start.

Two years ago, it was Gilman's stacked senior roster. Last year, Boys' Latin and eventual league champ St. Paul's were a slight notch above the rest.

This season? It's anybody's guess.

In the second week of league play, it's already clear that there are a handful of strong teams that could easily end up holding the big trophy by season's end. Last week made the front end of the area's Top 15 poll a milkshake.

St. Mary's was most responsible, beating then-No. 1 Boys" Latin and then-No. 3 Gilman to move from No. 6 to No. 1. Calvert Hall, young but overwhelmingly talented, showed it could stack up with the best with a win over defending league champ and then-No. 2 St. Paul's, which also lost to emerging McDonogh.

The stunner came on Friday when Severn surprised then-No. 8 Loyola, knocking the Dons out of the poll. Tuesday's games this week thickened the plot with St. Paul's getting a huge win at St. Mary's to hand the Saints their first loss. Loyola found answers with an upset win over Gilman.

Every team has strengths and weaknesses. Most every game will be there for the taking. To be continued ...

Here's a look at the current standings:

MIAA A Black Division

Overall League
Calvert Hall 7-0 3-0
McDonogh 7-1 3-0
St. Paul's 6-3 2-2
Loyola 5-3 1-2
Severn 6-5 1-3

MIAA A Red Division

St. Mary's 7-1 3-1
Boys' Latin 5-2 2-1
Gilman 3-3 1-2
Arch. Spalding 2-4 1-2
Mount St. Joseph 1-5 0-4

John Carroll baseball jumps to No. 1

A week of upsets turned the area's baseball standings topsy-turvy, eventually landing John Carroll in the unexpected position of No. 1.

There were tremendous upsets: No. 4 Calvert Hall rocked No. 1 Gilman, 15-5, only to turn around and be pummeled by No. 6 John Carroll, 20-9.

No. 2 C. Milton Wright lost to No. 9 Fallston, which was beaten by unranked Patterson Mill, 12-3. No. 3 Severna Park lost to No. 10 Chesapeake-AA, 6-5 and needed an extra day to beat unranked Glen Burnie, 9-8.

It seemed that for each highly ranked team that won big, a mystifying upset followed.

The only one that reversed the order was John Carroll. The Patriots lost, 10-8, to St. Paul's, received a lecture from coach Joe Stetka about the need to focus and play their best, and responded with the big 20-9 victory over Calvert Hall.

The effort earned them the No. 1 ranking this week -- a result that nearly took Stetka's breath away.

"It's an honor," he said a few hours before sending his team on the field to face Gilman, the former No. 1 that now rests in the No. 3 spot. "Maybe this is what the kids need to step it up."

Stetka said he is not certain that John Carroll has ever been ranked No. 1 by The Sun.

"We haven't made the MIAA postseason tournament in 15 years," he said. "It has to be 22 or 23 years ago, if we were ever No. 1."

The primary reason for the jump to the top is the team's victory over Calvert Hall just after the Cardinals had beaten Gilman.

"We got up 20-1 on Cavert Hall at one point," Stetka said. "That's unheard of. But I've got a real good ballclub right now."

That day, senior pitcher Trent Shaw, 3-0 and already committed to the North Carolina-Ashville for next year, did what Stetka called "pitching backward."

"That's a real good baseball term," he said. "It means that instead of starting with his fastball, he used his breaking stuff and kept them off-balance throughout the game. Calvert Hall has great hitters throughout their lineup, but we were able to keep them off-guard."

John Carroll also got strong offense, with senior Brendan Butler (Towson) hitting two doubles and a homer for seven RBI, senior K.J. Hockaday (Maryland) driving in five runs with two homers and an extra-base hit, and Nick Naumann going 4-for-4.

All-Metro wrestling team draws criticism from afar

The other night while on sick leave and having dinner with my family, I got a work call from Hong Kong. The last time I was getting work calls from that far away was when I was covering tennis and the likes of Boris Becker and Pete Sampras, and Pam Shriver would call me to answer my questions for upcoming major tennis tournaments like Wimbledon or the French Open.

Unfortunately, the call the other day was not from Shriver and was not about me meeting someone like Andre Agassi for an interview at Roland Garros in Paris. It was a father who was upset about his son being left off The Sun's All-Metro wrestling team.

The father had valid points. His son, Peter Galli, who competed at 140 pounds for St. Paul's, was his School's Athlete of the Year and had beaten Archbishop Spalding's Will Switzer during the regular season and in the MIAA Tournament.

The fact that I had made Switzer the All-Metro first teamer and Carver's Tyler Hinton the second team selection mystified him.

"What can I tell people the reason is?" the father asked.

But as I explained on the phone, picking All-Metro teams is an inexact science. We are picking among athletes from five counties, Baltimore City and the private schools. Who is best? Who is more worthy, the private school champion, the public school champion or perhaps, someone else?

We consider what we see, what we know. We also consider the information sent to us from the hard-working coaches who campaign for their wrestlers. In this case, some of the information reached me the night I was supposed to be finished the assignment and I was already lining up athletes for photos.

The process is always difficult because the time frame is always limited and the coaches' responses are often slow, due to their own work loads. The situation this spring was even more stressful because the time was made shorter by a week, as I was scheduled for surgery and had to have everything turned in early.

I said on the phone that night, that I didn't remember the details of exactly why I had made the selections the way I had and listening to this parent I felt like crying. But now, back at work, and reviewing it, I don't know that having the information sooner would have changed the outcome.

I had talked to other coaches and others knowledgeable about Maryland high school wrestling, I was aware Galli was ranked No. 1 on the Maryland State Forum wrestling site.

But in the end it was my decision. The reason I chose Switzer was that despite being beaten several times by Galli, when it came down to the finals of the Maryland Independent Schools State Tournament, Switzer had not been intimidated by past losses, turned the tables and won the state crown.

Switzer and Galli had each done their best in all off their meetings. Galli had been able to win close matches all but once and he went on to finish second in the National Preps Tournament. But in their last official meeting of the year, Switzer had managed to beat his long-time foe for the state title.

Carver's Hinton had also beaten the odds. He won the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's state title, becoming only the fourth city school wrestler in history to do so. How do you ignore that?

To make a long story short, the father calling from Hong Kong was right: Peter Galli did belong on the team, as did a number of others in several weight classes that were overloaded with talent. My apologies to all who believe they should have been first or second team selections.

But there was no right or wrong answer.

It is a difficult, if not impossible job. It's like fitting two dozen people in a Volkswagen Beetle. You can try and try - which I did - but they just won't fit comfortably, if they fit at all.

Know that I did my best in a difficult situation. That should be a trait admired, or at least respected, from Baltimore to Hong Kong and all ports in between.

That being said, input is always appreciated. The more information that comes in the better informed the final decision should be. So, please - coaches, parents or anyone who just loves following the local high school wrestling scene - feel free throughout the next season to send email with information about deserving kids.
